Intelligent odour detection is a challenging research topic and requires an in depth study into types of sensors, advanced signal processing and pattern recognition methods. Electronic nose (E-nose) can be used to identify odour variety, aroma intensity and degree of freshness. The E-nose consists of an array of conductometric chemical sensors which change resistance when exposed to vapours. The applications of commercial E-noses are broad and continuously expanding to various areas such as environmental monitoring, medical instrumentation, and food industries. This paper presents intelligent processing of information collected by a portable 32-sensor E-nose for fish freshness assessment. We used artificial neural networks (ANNs) to design an intelligent system for measuring of the freshness of spoiling fish. It was found that the degree of selectivity and the type of odours that could be detected by the E-nose are largely dependent on the choice and number of sensors in the sensor array. We identified the most sensitive sensors, which provide a good estimation of freshness assessment in a laboratory environment. The information processing method was applied to collected data from four species. The procedure was repeated every day during a period of ten days after catching the fish. It was found that the proposed intelligent system can successfully identify the number of days after catching the fish with an accuracy of up to of 91%. The results obtained from this research suggest that the proposed assessment method can be used in the design of an intelligent fish freshness assessment system.

This paper studies multi-group multicast beamforming with a hybrid large-scale antenna array in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems. A low-complexity hybrid structure is adopted, where each RF chain is only connected to part of the antenna elements. We formulate a hybrid analog and digital beamforming design problem for multi-group multicast transmission with the objective of minimizing the total transmit power at the base station, subject to an individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio constraint for each multicast group. The problem is very challenging and its global optimal solution is difficult to obtain. We first adopt alternating minimization method to design the analog and digital beamformer alternatively. Then we solve each of the analog and digital subproblems through solving a sequence of convex problems via concave-convex procedure (CCP). Each convex CCP subproblem is reformulated as a novel alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) form. Our ADMM reformulation enables that each updating step can be decomposed into multiple subproblems with much smaller size, which can be solved optimally in parallel with closed-form expressions. Simulation results show that our algorithm can achieve favorable performance with very low complexity compared with the state-of-art methods.

This work examines a cross-layered caching problem for distributed estimation in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In WSNs, large amounts of data are produced continuously over time, and storing all the data collected from the sensors can be costly. In distributed estimation applications, sensors first gather information about a common phenomenon, and then forward the information to a fusion center where the final estimate is computed. By assuming that the parameters are correlated over time, the estimation quality at the fusion center can be improved by combining both present and past information, where the latter can be obtained from cached data. Different from conventional caching problems, where the goal is to reconstruct the sensors' observations, our caching strategy is designed to minimize the long term average mean-square error (MSE) of the final estimate. This problem can be modelled as a Markov decision process but, due to the curse of dimensionality, is solved here using a greedy one-step-ahead caching strategy, which only minimizes the expected MSE in the next time slot. This results in a nonlinear fractional programming problem that is solved approximately using semi-definite relaxation and a modified Dinkelbach's algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through numerical simulations.

Higher Order Statistics (HOS) have been proposed to achieve improvements over second order statistics array processing for various applications. We investigate the potential for angle estimation and source resolution with a very small planar array with 3 elements. We use the MUSIC method as generic DOA estimator. Using standard array theory we evaluate conditions under which an improvement in resolution can be obtained. A critical feature is the higher sensitivity of HOS methods to sources of unequal power. In this case standard MUSIC can perform better. A parallel complementary use of both methods is therefore recommended.

This paper develops a novel channel estimation approach for multi-user millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless systems with large antenna arrays. By exploiting the inherent mmWave channel sparsity, we propose a novel simultaneous-estimation with iterative fountain training (SWIFT) framework, in which the average number of channel measurements is adapted to various channel conditions. To this end, the base station (BS) and each user continue to measure the channel with a random subset of transmit/receive beamforming directions until the channel estimate converges. We formulate the channel estimation process as a compressed sensing problem and apply a sparse estimation approach to recover the virtual channel information. As SWIFT does not adapt the BS's transmitting beams to any single user, we are able to estimate all user channels simultaneously. Simulation results show that SWIFT can significantly outperform existing random-beamforming based approaches that use a fixed number of measurements, over a range of signal-to-noise ratios.

We develop the application of compressive sensing (CS) for solving general inverse electromagnetic problems such as three-dimensional (3D) microwave imaging. The goal is to estimate locations of unknown, but sparse targets, hidden inside dielectric bodies. The potential of CS for localizing sparse targets in vacuum or buried in ground was shown in previous work. We extend the proposed schemes by considering arbitrary embedding medium and exploiting dual-polarized measurements. We compare the performance of CS and beamforming in the breast-cancer estimation problem.

Wireless backhauling is a promising technology for Ultra-Dense Networks (UDN). Resource management for access and backhaul is a key issue. Different from conventional resource allocation approaches, we partition radio resources for access and backhaul, taking into account the impacts of cooperative transmission modes. This problem is formulated to maximize the area throughput of UDN to obtain the optimal resource partition and power allocation. It includes two coupling problems and thus is difficult to solve. Firstly we prove the power allocation problem i.e. beamforming problem can be equally decoupled from original problem. And then, the resource partition problem can be converted to a convex optimization problem. Finally, we can get the Pareto optimal solution to the original problem. Simulation results show the gains of the proposed approach.

In this paper, a distributed grouped-relay network with multiple source and destination nodes is introduced, and its distributed beamforming based on an average signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR) is proposed to mitigate interference and colored noise from the multiple relay groups. Through system bit-error-rate simulations, it is verified that the performance of the leakage-based selection scheme is comparable to a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR)-based optimal beamforming method albeit at much lower complexity.

In this paper we formulate a general link packing problem for mmWave networks. Each link is a 4-tuple determined by the choice of receiving user, transmitting access point, transmit beamforming vector and receive beamforming vector. The problem seeks to optimize the weighted sum over active links, where each link is allowed to have any arbitrarily chosen weight or priority and an active link must satisfy a minimum link quality threshold. Our formulation models a practical scenario in which blockages due to arbitrarily placed obstacles in the propagation environment are allowed to occur, where we note that mmWave transmissions are extremely susceptible to blockages. This is a key departure from the classical link packing problem where only the signal attenuation based on propagation distance is modeled. We exploit the sparsity induced by the directional nature of propagation due to beamforming, limited diffraction and the significant signal attenuation due to high path, penetration losses. We propose a novel technique that exploits this sparsity and considers an alternate formulation which is a column-sparse binary packing problem. This alternate formulation is in general conservative and we derive sufficient conditions under which it is equivalent to the original problem. We construct an efficient iterative algorithm and show that it outperforms other heuristics and guarantees a constant factor approximation for input instances that are likely to occur in mmWave networks.

In this work, we detail an ℓ 1 -norm Linearly Constrained Affine Projection Algorithm (ℓ 1 -CAPA) to be employed in solving problems whose solutions have some degree of sparsity, such as in beamforming or when dealing with sparse communication channels. The effectiveness of this algorithm, in terms of MSE and convergence rate, is demonstrated via computer simulations.
