Reliable detection and accurate estimation of weak targets and their Doppler frequencies is a challenging problem in MIMO radar systems. Reflections from such targets are often overpowered by those from stronger nearby targets and clutter. Considering a 3-D data model where the coherent processing interval comprises multiple pulses, a novel weak target detection and estimation approach is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is based on creating partially overlapping spatial beams, and performing canonical correlation analysis (CCA) in the resulting beamspace. It is shown that if a target is present in the overlap sector, then its Doppler profile can be reliably estimated via beamspace CCA, even if hidden under much stronger interference from nearby targets and clutter. Numerical results are included to validate this theoretical claim, demonstrating that the proposed Beamspace Canonical Correlation (BCC) method yields considerable performance improvement over existing approaches.

This paper presents a practical system design approach for cooperative spectrum sensing in cognitive sensor networks. An optimization problem is formulated, where the objective is to choose appropriate number of samples used in local energy calculation and linear combination weights for a global fusion center that together maximize global spectrum detection probability. Depending on the local information available to the fusion center and secondary users, practical system design is proposed in high fusion signal to noise ratio (SNR) regime, which has minimal implementation complexity and negligible performance loss, thus provides an efficient system design alternative in practice. Simulation results are presented to verify the analytical results.

This paper investigates the design choices and implementation schemes for information fusion among cluster heads in a large-scale hierarchical wireless sensor network. Two main issues addressed are: whether to choose centralized processing with aid of a fusion center or decentralized collaboration among cluster heads, and for the latter choice, how to collaborate. Based on a sparse signal recovery problem arising from an environmental monitoring application, we propose a decentralized collaborative decision-making algorithm for cluster heads, and compare it with the centralized scheme. Our observation is: when the number of sensors within each cluster is quite large to induce a large amount of data, and the cluster heads are subject to multi-hop communications due to limited communication range, the collaborative algorithm is superior to the centralized one in terms of communication load and energy efficiency.

In satellite-based systems, such as global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), the use of antenna arrays is becoming increasingly common, as it allows various applications, such as jammer/spoofer suppression or improving the positioning accuracy in multipath-environments. Testing such equipment under realistic and reproducible conditions is often not feasible, for example in the case of a not fully deployed system (e. g., Galileo satellites) or testing of classified transmission technologies (e. g., Galileo public regulated service (PRS) receivers). For tests under reproducible and realistic conditions, we propose 3D wave-field synthesis (WFS) in an over-the-air testbed. This allows a realistic emulation of the radio environment under laboratory conditions. In this paper, a feasibility study for such a testbed is presented. Possible antenna setups for a 3D WFS laboratory environment are proposed. For these setups, the 3D WFS accuracy is investigated for emulating different polarization types and multipath reflections with arbitrary source directions. The results show that with presently available hardware for channel emulation and 3D WFS, a virtual electromagnetic environment can be created for testing receivers with (beamforming) antenna arrays of typical size (120 mm-300mm diameter).

In this paper, we consider the downlink channel estimation for the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted MIMO systems in the millimeter wave band. It is challenging to perform the channel estimation for the IRS-assisted wireless communication systems, due to the large amount of passive reflecting elements at the IRS. On account of the inherent sparsity of millimeter-wave channels, the sparse representation expressions of the channel between the base station (BS) and IRS and that between the IRS and user equipment (UE) are obtained separately. Furthermore, the cascaded channel is estimated by solving the BS-IRS and IRS-UE channels in an alternating way. To improve the estimation accuracy and reduce the pilot over-head, the algorithm of the block-structured orthogonal matching pursuit (BS-OMP) is devised to estimate the BS-IRS channel by exploiting its block sparsity. The simulation results show that the proposed method provides the higher estimation accuracy and consumes less pilot overhead by comparing with its counterparts.

In this paper, we investigate the transmit signal de-sign problem for a dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system equipped with one-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Specifically, the one-bit DFRC waveform is designed to minimize the difference between the transmitted beampattern and a desired one, while ensuring constructive interference (CI)-based QoS constraints for communication users. The formulated problem is a discrete optimization problem with a nonconvex objective function and many linear constraints. To solve it, we first propose a penalty model to transform the discrete problem into a continuous one. Then, we propose an inexact augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) framework to solve the penalty model. In particular, the ALM subproblem at each iteration is solved by a custom-designed block successive upper-bound minimization (BSUM) algorithm, which admits closed-form updates and thus makes the proposed approach computationally efficient. Simulation results verify the superiority of the proposed approach over the existing ones in both the radar and communication performance.

We analyze the effect of node mobility on the convergence time of pairwise gossip algorithms. We use a simple mobility model and illustrate how to transform a gossip with mobile agents into gossip in a static network with a nonuniform distribution on selecting neighbors. We describe two methods for analyzing Markov chain convergence that can be used to derive upper and lower bounds on the convergence time of the network. Several examples are given to show the usefulness of these methods.

This paper presents a robust speech recognition system using a microphone array for the 3rd CHiME Challenge. A minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer with adaptive microphone gains is proposed for robust beamforming. Two microphone gain estimation methods are studied using the speech-dominant time-frequency bins. A multichannel noise reduction (MCNR) postprocessing is also proposed to further reduce the interference in the MVDR processed signal. Experimental results for the ChiME-3 challenge show that both the proposed MVDR beamformer with microphone gains and the MCNR postprocessing improve the speech recognition performance significantly. With the state-of-the-art deep neural network (DNN) based acoustic model, our system achieves a word error rate (WER) of 11.67% on the real test data of the evaluation set.

Reconstruction of high resolution images from multiple low resolution images at various displacements is a well studied, ill posed problem. Designs using lenses with different imaging characteristics improve the theoretical results and also reduce the image reconstruction problem to a set of loosely coupled smaller reconstructions. The paper derives the performance limits for reconstruction from multiple lower resolution images as a function of measurement bit precision and measurement noise.

Machine learning over graphs (MLoG) has attracted growing attention due to its effectiveness in processing relational data from complex systems such as social networks, financial markets, and the brain. However, MLoG algorithms that use the graph topology for information aggregation have been shown to amplify the already existing bias towards certain under-represented groups, often leading to discriminatory results in downstream tasks. In this context, here we consider the prob-lem of topology-induced algorithmic bias mitigation by cross-pollinating tools from MLoG and graph signal processing. Specifi-cally, we argue that application of a tunable debiasing graph filter can be reinterpreted as a graph rewiring process, thus offering an explicit handle to manipulate the utility versus topological bias tradeoff. Building on this insight, we formulate a fairness-aware network topology inference problem to obtain a rewired graph minimizing a correlation-based, unsupervised bias metric. Node classification experiments on several real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach typically outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in terms of fairness metrics, and without a degradation in classification accuracy.
