Recently, the authors proposed a miniaturized microphone array not utilizing the phase difference but utilizing the directivity of each microphone, namely aggregated microphones. We have already showed that the phased microphone array and the aggregated microphones can be described within the same framework. We have also showed that it is possible to apply the aggregated microphones to the various methods of the phased microphone array. However, the difference of the performance between the phased array and the aggregated microphones has not been evaluated yet. The effect of the directivity and the posture of each microphone on the performance of the aggregated microphones has not also been evaluated yet. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of DCMP (Directionally Constrained Minimization of Power) adaptive array utilizing aggregated microphones.

The methodology of factor analysis is extended to cases where primary and secondary measurements in a multisensor array bring information about the covariance matrices in a multivariate normal model. The new methodology is termed adaptive factor analysis. The primary channel contains measurements that may carry a low-dimensional subspace signal plus noise, in which case the covariance matrix for the measurements consists of a low-rank matrix plus a positive-definite matrix. The secondary channel contains measurements that carry only noise, in which case the covariance matrix consists only of a positive definite matrix, identical to the positive definite covariance matrix in the primary channel. Neither the low-rank nor positive definite covariance matrix is known. The results of this paper return rank-shaping estimators of the low-rank and positive definite components of covariance, and automatically identify the signal subspace. These estimators are then used to build up MUSIC-like direction finding algorithms.

The Manchester Decoding Algorithm (MDA) presented in [1] succeeds in separating Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) replies impinging on an array. The final step of the MDA consist of jointly diagonalizing a collection of several symmetric cubes by a sub-optimal technique. In this article, we demonstrate that it is in fact a PARAFAC problem with an almost symmetric solution. Furthermore, comparisons with other algorithms are carried out, with the help of computer simulations.

We propose a method of indoor localization using array sensors. This method uses not only the signal strengths of received signals, but also the spatial information of impinging signals on array sensors. The signal subspaces, which include information about the strengths and angles of arrival of impinging signals on the array sensors, are used to identify the location of the terminal. We use the cosines of the principal angles between the signal subspaces of the spatial covariance matrices of the signals received at an array antenna to measure the similarity between signals transmitted from two locations. We conducted an experiment indoors to confirm the validity and effectiveness of our method. The experimental results confirm its effectiveness.

Beyond traditional solid-state antenna, fluid antennas (FAs) exhibit unparalleled reconfigurability, drawing significant interest for applications in wireless communications and radar. This paper presents a design of FA array (FAA) MIMO radar for improved target detection in the presence of jammers, highlighting the advantages of FAA in sensing scenarios. By utilizing flexible positioning of FAAs, we introduce the antenna position vector (APV) as a design variable, in addition to waveforms, aiming to maximize the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) with constraints to maintain waveform unimodularity and avoid FA coupling. The formulated nonconvex problem is tackled by an iterative algorithm based on the block majorization-minimization framework. Each iteration involves solving linearly constrained quadratic programming problems for APV optimization and updating the waveforms via a closed-form solution. Simulation results reveal that the designed APVs of the transmit and receiving FAAs can automatically balance angular resolution and ambiguity, which together with the optimized waveform, significantly enhances the SINR through enhanced jamming suppression. This improvement is attributed to increased flexibility across spatial and frequency dimensions facilitated by the FAAs.

Communication-constrained algorithms for decentralized learning and optimization rely on the exchange of quantized signals coupled with local updates. In this context, differential quantization is an effective technique to mitigate the negative impact of quantization by leveraging correlations between subsequent iterates. In addition, the use of error feedback, which consists of incorporating the quantization error into subsequent steps, is a powerful mechanism to compensate for the bias caused by the quantization. Under error feedback, performance guarantees in the literature have so far focused on algorithms employing a fusion center or a special class of contractive quantizers that cannot be implemented with a finite number of bits. In this work, we propose and study a new decentralized communication-efficient learning approach that blends differential quantization with error feedback. The results show that, under some general conditions on the quantization noise, and for sufficiently small step-sizes mu, it is possible to keep the estimation errors small (on the order of mu) in steady state. The results also suggest that, in the small step-size regime, it is possible to attain the performance achievable in the absence of compression.

This paper is concerned with new fast adaptive beamforming algorithms which are based on the internal model principle, to deal with fast fading environment to track the desired signal changes and suppress the interferences. The LMS and RLS algorithms for constructing nulls are derived by incorporating an AR model into the weight dynamics, and then can track fast fading environment. The convergence analysis of mean and mean-square error of the weight vector are also investigated and stability condition is clarified. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can improve tracking ability and BER performance in DS-CDMA systems.

We address the problem of distributed filtering in a wireless sensor network and develop distributed approximations of three variants of the ensemble Kalman filter. We express the update equations in an alternative information form in order to formulate a distributed measurement update mechanism. The distributed filters use randomized gossip to reach consensus on the statistics needed to perform an update. Simulation results suggest that in the case of linear measurements and high-dimensional nonlinear measurements (with measurement model parameters known network-wide) with nonlinear state dynamics the proposed schemes achieve accuracy comparable to state-of-the-art distributed filters while significantly reducing the communication overhead.

For space-time adaptive processing (STAP), we present three variants of an outlier removal algorithm, the self-censoring reiterative fast maximum likelihood (SCRFML). Specifically, these three SCRFML variants are implemented for three STAP methods, i.e., normalized adaptive matched filter (NAMF), normalized parametric adaptive matched filter (NPAMF), and low-rank normalized adaptive matched filter (LRNAMF). We demonstrated that the SCRFML algorithm can systematically reduce the number of dominant eigenvalues after successive regularization have been applied to the sample/parametric covariance matrix estimate. Then, we show that the model order for NPAMF can be determined from the simulation of cutoff signal-to-noise ratio versus sample support. After the application of outlier removal variants, we compare the detection performance and computational costs of these STAP methods.

A novel technique for the online frequency estimation of three-phase power systems using the widely linear (augmented) complex least mean square (ACLMS) algorithm has recently been proposed, and was shown to achieve significantly better estimates than conventional complex least mean square (CLMS) algorithm based frequency estimation under unbalanced system conditions. In this paper, we consider the frequency estimation problem from the state space point of view, and show that the augmented complex Kalman filter (ACKF) offers significantly better performance than ACLMS.
