One aspect of system safety assurance is the application of large test sets. To aid in the development of test cases, researchers have investigated automated test generation systems which decrease the time and cost of acquiring new tests. Many automated systems currently exist, but few address the generation of trajectories of data. A trajectory is defined as a series of data points with each point relying upon the state of the system and previous point values. Examples of trajectories include an airplane's flight path or data describing a nuclear reaction. The paper describes an original approach to test trajectory generation using statistical regression models. An existing small set of trajectories is utilized to build regressive models. Then, the independent variables of the model can be perturbed, providing the basis for the use of the regressive model in the generation of new trajectories. A case study has been conducted within the scope of testing the sensor failure detection, identification, and accommodation (SFDIA) flight control scheme. We report and evaluate the results of this case study.

Use cases have been shown to be an effective construct to express system requirements in terms of environmentally visible behaviors. However, refinement of the use case into a set of corresponding system requirements is only indirectly supported by use case semantics that focus on environmental objects and their interaction with the system. The authors use a scenario-like extension to the actor-oriented use case called a system-oriented use case which extends the use case to a set of system behaviors. We enrich the system-oriented use case with a fusion-like notation to encode the specification of system behaviors constrained by the actor's role and in support of the actor's goal. Our extensions produce incrementally less abstract requirements that terminate in life cycle expressions traceable to the use case and actor. We provide formal definitions for role, goal and the responsibilities of liveness and safety.

J.M. Voas (1992) defines testability as the probability that a test case will fail if the program has a fault. It is defined in the context of an oracle for the test, and a distribution of test cases, usually emulating operations. Because testability is a dynamic attribute of software, it is very computation-intensive to measure directly. The paper presents a case study of real time avionics software to predict the testability of each module from static measurements of source code. The static software metrics take much less computation than direct measurement of testability. Thus, a model based on inexpensive measurements could be an economical way to take advantage of testability attributes during software development. We found that neural networks are a promising technique for building such predictive models, because they are able to model nonlinearities in relationships. Our goal is to predict a quantity between zero and one whose distribution is highly skewed toward zero. This is very difficult for standard statistical techniques. In other words, high testability modules present a challenging prediction problem that is appropriate for neural networks.

Fault-tolerant systems are traditionally divided into fault containment regions and custom logic is added to ensure the effects of a fault within a containment region would not propagate to the other regions. This technique may not be applicable in a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) based system. While COTS technology is attractive due to its low cost, they are not developed with the same level of rigorous fault tolerance in mind. Furthermore, COTS suppliers usually have no interest to add any overhead or sacrifice performance to implement fault tolerance for a narrow market of high reliability applications. To overcome this shortcoming, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has developed a multi-layer fault protection methodology to achieve high reliability in COTS-based avionics systems. This methodology has been applied to the bus architecture that uses the COTS bus interface standards ieee 1394 and I/sup 2/C. The paper first gives an overview of the multi-layer fault-protection design methodology for COTS based mission-critical systems. Then the effectiveness of the methodology is analyzed in terms of coverage and cost. The results are compared to the traditional custom designed system.

Object-oriented design patterns are introduced to document good-quality reusable design practices. A design pattern abstracts a solution structure that is mostly described in terms of a set of collaborating classes or objects. Composing these design structures to develop application-specific designs involves an integration process that glues patterns together. A tool-support for the integration process will expedite the design phase. Current OO modeling tools do not explicitly support patterns as architecture constructs with interfaces. We report on a prototype tool that supports visual composition of design patterns. The tool is called the Pattern-Oriented Design (POD) tool. The POD tool can be used to develop application-specific pattern-oriented designs. It facilitates the process of integrating patterns at the architecture level using the notion of pattern interfaces. The tool supports three hierarchical traceable pattern-level design models, namely the Pattern-Level view, the Pattern Interfaces view, and the Detailed Pattern-level view. Current visual modeling tools do not explicitly support the concepts of pattern views and pattern interfaces. The proposed tool facilitates the process of designing applications using patterns as design components, it integrates with existing object-oriented modeling tools, and it provides a mechanism to trace patterns through various abstraction levels. We use a feedback control framework as an illustrative example to show how the tool can be used to develop pattern-oriented designs for application-specific systems.

software testing is one of the most expensive phases in the software life cycle. Even for the best commercial grade software, it seldom contains fewer than 100 faults per million lines of code. These faults result in failures and costs for customers which software manufacturers are motivated to avoid. It is not unusual for manufacturers to spend 40% or more of their software budgets on testing in an effort to eliminate these faults. Hence, it is very important to provide a solution, supported by tools, which not only can reduce the cost but also improve the quality. The authors describe their effort in developing an Ada program instrumentation environment, Ada-PINE, for testing real time Ada programs. This tool can help developers and testers in many ways such as determining how well the software has been tested, displaying the code that has not been executed, and improving the code coverage in the most effective way. It can also conduct test set minimization with respect to code coverage and select effective fault-revealing regression tests.

Real-time database management systems (DBMSs) attempt to reach the double objective of maintaining both database logical and temporal consistency while attempting to enhance concurrency in transaction execution. This objective being difficult to reach and since some real-time applications need not respect this objective, some proposed work attempts to bring new concepts for relaxing transactions and/or data properties in a real-time context, that might be respected in traditional DBMSs. According to data fluctuations and/or deadline fluctuations, there are certain kinds of applications. In these applications, the key problem is to efficiently schedule real-time transactions that allow to manipulate inaccurate data and/or that have deadline overtaking. We show that multimedia applications are the best candidates to use these notions which are tightly connected to QoS of these applications. We propose transaction concurrency control and scheduling protocols that allow to bound data imprecision while allowing some transactions to execute beyond their deadlines by a bounded time quantity. These algorithms are based on the extended earliest deadline algorithm which cooperates with the transaction manager in order to deal with transaction concurrency control.

Starting with a foundational understanding, the subsequent sections delve into extant reliability frameworks such as ieee 1633-2016, followed by an exploration into AI-specific considerations in reliability planning, failure mode modeling, reliability application in development and testing phases, support for release decisions, and post-deployment monitoring. The study underscores the paramount importance of pioneering and adopting AI-specific reliability engineering practices.

This paper presents handoff management schemes for synchronization algorithms for wireless multimedia systems. The synchronization and handoff management schemes allow mobile hosts to receive time-dependant multimedia streams without delivery interruption while moving from one cell to another. They also maintain the correct ordering of the media components, through the execution of the wireless multimedia application by a means of timestamped messages passed among mobile hosts, base stations and servers. The timestamp values are used to compute the delay for each multimedia unit for each server. Furthermore, the proposed schemes always search for a quasi-receiver among the base stations with which the mobile hosts can communicate to synchronize multimedia units. We discuss the algorithms and present a set of simulation experiments that evaluate the performance of our schemes, using message complexity and buffer usage at each frame arrival time. Our results indicate that our schemes exhibit no underflow or overflow within the bounded delivery time. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
