An extension to the current IFPUG function point counting practices method is presented. This extension, called Full Function Points, has enabled Nortel Networks project teams to more completely scope the functional size of real-time software projects and to produce early, accurate development estimates more consistently. Although the function point metric is widely used in many software organizations throughout the world to produce accurate design estimates early the real-time software industry acknowledges that the application of the IFPUG functional scoping method has not been sufficient to dl-ive consistently accurate estimates for real-time software projects. This paper illustrates how a Nortel Networks pilot has supplemented the IFPUG method using a Full Function Point approach, an approach that has pioneered the first successful application of Full Function Points to enable the generation of consistently accurate effort estimates in a real-time environment.

We advocate the reuse of design knowledge rather than code as the most Effective means for obtaining productivity and quality improvements in software engineering activities. This knowledge comes in several forms: domain analysis, generative knowledge, and knowledge of the structure of a particular system in terms of the domain and how domain concepts are implemented. We are building and using a practical large-scale software (re)engineering tool, the Design Maintenance System (DMS) that implements these ideas. Reusing design knowledge, DMS is able to automate many interesting engineering activities: analysis, reverse engineering, forward synthesis, and eventually software maintenance via Design Maintenance. Code reuse methods are incapable of providing strong support for these activities. However, many issues involved in DMS construction are driven by the scale of the problem: number of languages, sheer code volume, amount of knowledge involved, and computational energy required.

The ever increasing demand for high software reliability requires more robust modeling techniques for software quality prediction. This paper presents a modeling technique that integrates fuzzy subtractive clustering with module-order modeling for software quality prediction. First fuzzy subtractive clustering is used do predict the number of faults, then module-order modeling is used to predict whether modules are fault-prone or not. Note that multiple linear regression is a special case of fuzzy subtractive clustering. We conducted a case study of a large legacy telecommunication system to predict whether each module will be considered fault-prone. The case study found that using fuzzy subtractive clustering and module-order modeling, one can classify modules which will likely have faults discovered by customers with useful accuracy prior to release.

The user interface design aims at enabling work and other activities to be performed more effectively, efficiently and with more enjoyment and satisfaction. User interface of multiuser Web applications is a medium where all objects being shared on it can be viewed indifferently from the geographical location and its users can interact with each other in real-time. Designing such an interface for users working collaboratively requires to deal with a number of issues. Herein, our concerns lies on the control component of Human-Computer Interaction design and corresponding User Interface (UI) software that implements it. Our interactive systems development process based on the MPX - Mapping from PAN (Protagonist Action Notation) into Xchart (eX-tended Statechart) is used to improve the product quality. Theta, we illustrate this methodological approach through a case study of a Web interactive system.

This paper introduces sequence constraints into a formal specification language Z. Formal specification languages have been used to specify safety-critical applications, and many static and dynamic aspects of the system can be specified. However, the method calling constraints, a runtime behavior, are often missed. This paper introduces two kinds of sequence constraints, those constraints with respect to a schema and those with respect to multiple schemas. Once sequence constraints al-e specified, together with parameter specifications already in Z, one can generate test cases including test inputs and their expected outputs using various testing strategies such as partition testing, boundary testing, random testing, stress testing, and negative testing. An application has been specified in Z using sequence constraints, and test cases generated have been used to test the software. The results show that the test cases generated successfully detected all the faults seeded.

Use Cases have been shown to be an effective construct to express system requirements in terms of environmentally visible behaviors. However, refinement of the Use Case into a set of corresponding system requirements is only indirectly supported by Use Case semantics that focus on environmental objects and their interaction with the system. In this paper we use a scenario-like extension to the Actor-Oriented Use Case called a System-Oriented Use Case which extends the Use Case to a set of system behaviors. We enrich the System-Oriented Use Case with a Fusion-like notation to encode the specification of system behaviors constrained by the Actor's role and in support of the Actor's goal. Our extensions produce incrementally less abstract requirements that terminate in Life Cycle expressions traceable to the Use Case and Actor. We provide formal definitions for role, goal and the responsibilities of liveness and safety.

An issue that the real-time software research community has long recognized as an important technological challenge but has not shown much progress in meeting the challenge is to guarantee response times of real-rime distributed systems. Two basic problems must be addressed to effectively meet this challenge: It establishment of the distributed real-time program structure and the system infrastructure structure that enable systematic analysis of the worst-case time behavior the application systems, and (2) development of tools which perform automated analysis of the worst-case time behavior while leaving only minimal work to the designers. Reseal ch on the first problem has produced some useful, results in recent years. Time is thus type for tackling the second problem on the basis of those recent developments in handling the first problem. This paper-describes a desirable systematic timing analysis process which builds upon the recent results in the first problem area. An outline of a desirable analysis tool is also presented.

Voas defines testability as the probability that a test case will fail if the program has a fault. It is defined in the context of an oracle for the test, and a distribution of test cases, usually emulating operations. Because testability is a dynamic attribute of software, it is very computation-intensive to measure directly. This paper presents a case study of real-time avionics software to predict the testability of each module from static measurements of source code. The static software metrics take much less computation than direct measurement of testability. Thus,, a model based on inexpensive measurements could be an economical way to tale advantage of testability attributes during software development. We found that neural networks are a promising technique for building such predictive models, because they are able to model nonlinearities in relationships. Our goal is to predict a quantity between zero and one whose distribution is highly skewed toward zero. This is very difficult for standard statistical techniques. In other words, high-testability modules present a challenging prediction problem that is appropriate for neural networks.

One aspect of system safety assurance is the application of large test sets. To aid in the development of test cases, researchers have investigated automated test generation systems which decrease the time and cost of acquiring new tests. Many automated systems currently exist, but few address the generation of trajectories of data. A trajectory is defined as a series of data points with each point relying upon the state of the system and previous point values. Examples of trajectories include an airplane's flight path ol data describing a nuclear reaction. This paper describes an original approach to test trajectory generation using statistical regression models. An existing small set of trajectories is utilized to build regressive models. Then, the independent variables of the model can be pel tui bed, providing the basis for the use of the regressive model in the generation of new trajectories. A case study has been conducted within the scope of testing the sensor failure detection, identification, and accommodation (SFDIA) flight control scheme. We report and evaluate the results of this case study.

Fault-tolerant systems are traditionally divided into fault containment regions and custom logic is added to ensure the effects of a fault within a containment region would not propagate to the other regions. This technique may not be applicable in a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) based system. While COTS technology is attractive due to its low cost. they are nor developed with the same level of rigorous fault tolerance in mind. Furthermore, COTS suppliers usually have no interest to add any overhead or sacrifice performance to implement fault-tolerance for a narrow market of high reliability applications. To over come this shortcoming, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has developed a multi-layer fault protection methodology to achieve high reliability ill COTS-based avionics systems. This methodology has been applied to the bus architecture that uses the COTS bus interface standards ieee 1394 and (IC)-C-2. This paper-first gives an overview of the multi-layer fault-protection design methodology for COTS-based mission-critical systems. Then the effectiveness of the methodology is analyzed in terms of coverage and cost. The results ale compared to the traditional custom designed system.
