The KEDDC software package for computer-aided control system design is applied to the development of control techniques for future large flexible spacecraft in a joint industry, university and government research and development project. The Operational Mobile Communications Satellite (OMSAT) proposed for the mid 1990's featuring a 44m offset-fed antenna, is used as target application. A reduced version of a 146th order high fidelity dynamics model of the satellite serves as a benchmark system. This application is demanding and forms an important performance benchmark for any software system because the high order of structural models requires the use of highly stable and efficient numerical algorithms. KEDDC has been tested on this problem for more than one year and has performed flawlessly, improving considerably the design efficiency as well as the scope of system analysis.

A Real-Time Architectural specification (RAS) approach and its application to command and control (C2) systems are presented The objective is to establish a formal foundation that will enable us to integrate existing rich but fragmented formal techniques for system specification and verification into practical and scaleable formal engineering methods to support the design and development of highly reliable real-time distributed systems. The contribution of RAS is twofold: First, it provides a formal system that integrates system's timing requirements and the propagation of the requirements into the process of architectural modeling and design and provides a systematic way to enforce that the requirements are met in every step of the design process. Second, it offers an incremental and more scaleable approach for design modeling. These two features together make RAS a suitable model for the design of C2 systems. Based on these features, we further present an incremental method for verifying timing properties of a RAS model that helps to reduce the complexity of analysis both at a given design level or across different design levels.

A new differential input CMOS transconductor circuit for VHF filtering application is introduced. The new circuit has a very high frequency bandwidth, large linear differential mode input range and good common mode signal rejection capability. Using 0.35μm CMOS technology with 3 V power supply, the transconductor has a ±0.9 V linear differential input range with a - 54.6dB total harmonic distortion (THD) and more than 1 GHz - 3dB bandwidth. A 3rd order elliptic low pass gm-C filter with a cutoff frequency of 150MHz is demonstrated as an application of the new transconductor.

The engineering of software for Computer Aided Control systemsengineering (CACSE) using the concept of software tools is discussed. A set of tools is presented which will provide an infrastructure upon which a fully integrated CACSE package could be readily built. Emphasis is placed on the man-machine interface.
