Object-oriented design patterns are introduced to document good-quality reusable design practices. A design pattern abstracts a solution structure that is mostly described in terms of a set of collaborating classes or objects. Composing these designs structures to develop application-specific designs involves an integration process that glues patterns together. A tool-support for the integration process will expedite the design phase. Current OO modeling tools do not explicitly support patterns as architecture constructs with interfaces. In this paper, we report on a prototype tool that supports visual composition of design patterns. The tool is called the Pattern-Oriented Design (POD) tool. The POD tool can be used to develop application-specific pattern-oriented designs. It facilitates the process of integrating patterns at the arhitecture level using the notion of pattern interfaces. The tool supports three hierarchical traceable pattern-level design models, namely the Pattern-level view, the Pattern Interfaces view, and the Detailed Pattern-Level view. Current visual modeling tools do not explicitly support the concepts of pattern views and pattern interfaces. The proposed tool facilitates the process of designing applications using patterns as design components, it integrates with existing object-oriented modeling tools, and it provides a mechanism to trace patterns through various abstraction levels. We nse a feedback control framework as an illustrative example to show how the tool can be used to develop pattern-oriented designs for application-specific systems.

software testing is one of the most expensive phases in the software life cycle. Even for the best commercial grade software, it seldom contains fewer than 100 faults pel million lines of code. These faults result in failures and costs for customers which software manufactures are motivated to avoid. It is not unusual for manufacturers to spend 40% or more of their software budgets on testing in an effort to eliminate these faults. Hence, it is very important to provide a solution, supported by tools, which not only can reduce the cost but also improve the quality. In this paper, we describe our effort in developing an Ada program instrumentation environment, Ada-PINE, for testing real-time Ada programs. This tool can help developers and testers in many ways such as determining how well the software has been tested, displaying the code that has not been executed, and improving the code coverage in the most effective way. It can also conduct test set minimization with respect to code coverage and select effective fault-revealing regression tests.

Real-Time Database Management systems (DBMSs) attempt to reach the double objective of maintaining both database logical and temporal consistency while attempting to enhance concurrency in transaction execution. This objective being difficult to reach and since some real-time applications need not to hardly respect this objective, some proposed work attempts to bring new concepts for relaxing transactions and/or data properties in real-time context, that might be respected in traditional DBMSs. According to data fluctuations and/or deadlines fluctuations there are some kinds of applications. In these applications, the key problem is to efficiently schedule real-time transactions that allow to manipulate inaccurate data and/or that have deadline overtaking. In this paper, we show that multimedia applications are the best candidate to the use of these notions which are tightly connected to eoS of these applications. And we propose transactions concurrency-control and scheduling protocols that allow to bound data imprecision while allowing some transactions' to execute beyond their deadlines by a bounded time quantity. These algorithms are based on the extended Earliest Deadline algorithm which cooperates with the transaction manager in order to deal with transactions concurrency control.

Dynamic memory management has been a high cost component in many software systems. A study has shown that memory intensive C programs can consume up to 30% of the program run time in memory allocation and liberation. Especially, in C++ programs, they tend to have object creation and deletion prolifically. The C++ memory allocation rate can be as much as ten times higher than the comparable applications written in C. Despite the importance of dynamic memory management in C++, there exist few software tools to study dynamic memory in C++. This paper introduces a tracing tool, called mtrace++, to study the dynamic memory allocation behavior in C++ programs. mtrace++ is a source code level instrumented tracing tool which produces records of allocation and deallocation information. mtrace++ identifies the origins of allocated memories and life-spans of objects. With limited overheads, mtrace++ can help programmers to solve dynamic memory problems with affordable cost. © 2000 ieee.

Information systems are basically distributed while object oriented brings new issues in software engineering. Pairing distributed systems with object paradigms results in a distributed object model. Choosing the appropriate distributed object model is a multi-criteria decision problem. Performance is a key criterion that makes software developers be able to select the object-oriented system that best fit their requirements. Classical techniques and methodologies of performance analysis are either unsuitable or unnatural to capture performance behavior of Object-Oriented (OO) systems. In this paper, we present Performance-Based Model for Distributed Object-Oriented software (DOOS) and a methodology to analyze and evaluate its performance. The new model evaluates the overall time cost of DOOS system considering the communication overheads. while preserving the OO features such as encapsulations, information hiding, inheritance, Etc.

application-specific computing systems are hardware and software systems designed specifically for a family of related applications. In contrast to developing algorithms to run on a general-purpose computer, application-specific system design techniques match the computing structure to the problem. Thus, application-specific computing systems can offer 100 to 1000 fold improvements in cost versus performance over general-purpose computers on applications such as signal processing, interactive graphics, heuristic search, numerical simulation, and many others. In this paper, we present a computational model for an application-specific multiprocessor system for multidimensional digital signal processing applications. © 1992 ieee.
