In ad hoc wireless networks, there are scenarios where the desired destination is located in the range of other transmitters, so that the efforts on setting up communication with this terminal will fail due to collisions that may occur between transmitted control frames and undesired received control and data frames. This phenomenon becomes a bottleneck when most of data transmissions experience packet fragmentation. In such scenarios, the desired destination becomes unreachable during the data transfer of neighboring nodes. Using the same PHY of ieee 802.11 and making slight modifications in its MAC, a new medium access control scheme equipped by a novel transmission scheduling algorithm is presented to address such problems. The performance of the proposed approach is compared with earlier schemes through simulation-based evaluations, showing performance enhancement due to better handling of unreachability issues.

Spatial clustering is an important research topic in spatial data mining (SDM). It is not only an important effective method but also a prelude of other task for SDM. Grouping similar data in large 2-dimensional spaces to find hidden patterns or meaningful sub-groups has many applications such as satellite imagery, geographic information systems, medical image analysis, marketing, computer visions, etc. So, many methods have been proposed in the literature, but few of them have taken into account constraints that may be present in the data or constraints on the clustering. These constraints have significant influence on the results of the clustering process of large spatial data. In this paper, we discuss the problem of spatial clustering with obstacles constraints and propose a novel spatial clustering method based on genetic algorithms (GAs) and K-Medoids, called GKSCOC, which aims to cluster spatial data with obstacles constraints. It can not only give attention to higher local constringency speed and stronger global optimum search, but also consider the obstacles constraints and make the results of spatial clustering more practice. Its performance has compared to GAs, K-Medoids; and the results on real datasets show that it is better than standard GAs and K-Medoids. The drawback of this method is a comparatively slower speed in spatial clustering

The digital television (DTV) technology becomes widely available and the need for a good interlace-to-progressive conversion (IPC) algorithm becomes more inevitable. In this paper, a new IPC scheme is proposed, which combines several existing techniques and is suitable for hardware implementation. The proposed scheme consists of three components: a spatial linear pre-filter, a motion estimator, and a three stage adaptive recursive (3SAR) filter. The proposed adaptive filter improves the performance of the system without requiring complex hardware design. The computer simulations and real-time FPGA/ASIC implementation demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed scheme in hardware applications

Multimedia has the promise of imparting medical education through novel teaching methods and encourages student interest. Medical educators must adapt to developing such computer and instructional technology to make such presentations a commonplace in the teaching setting. The scope of this paper is limited to the role of a physician in designing an educational multimedia instructional application using animations. It describes the requirements and stages of development of such a program with the goal of maximizing learning effectiveness. The animations entitled "How does blood clot?" are interactive and made in a computer program called "Flash" that focuses and simplifies the complicated concepts of blood coagulation. This animation is currently used as a part of the Problem Based Learning course in the Hematology/Neoplasia domain by second year medical students in the College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University, East Lansing MI. Student feedback/responses are described. The animations were also used to educate pediatric residents and senior medical students (3rd and 4th year) in reviewing the coagulation course. Insights gained from developing such projects are presented as a potential to use animation in computer assisted learning & teaching in medicine for the development of other projects in science learning environments.

This paper presents an overview and comparison of three major industrial-strength enterprise application development (and deployment) platforms. The platforms are ***, Java 2 Enterprise Edition, and WebObjects. The comparison includes discussion of the presentation tier, application tier, persistence tier, deployment, and tools. Although not a complete survey and somewhat subjective in its final recommendations, the paper should provide a general understanding of these three major platforms and how they compare. The choice of development platform is a significant one for developers and organisations (because they generally have a significant learning curve) and should not be made without a good understanding of the alternatives. © 2005 ieee.

Pervasive computing applications must be engineered to provide unprecedented levels of flexibility in order to reconfigure and adapt in response to changes in computing resources and user requirements. To meet these challenges, appropriate software engineering abstractions and infrastructure are required as a platform on which to build adaptive applications. In this paper we demonstrate the use of a disciplined, model-based approach to engineer a context-aware, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based communication application. This disciplined approach builds on our previously developed conceptual models and infrastructural components, which enable the description, acquisition, management and exploitation of arbitrary types of context and user preference information to enable adaptation to context changes.

In recent years, the Internet and World Wide Web have grown rapidly and become an important medium of software applications. Quality issues concerning Web application systems (WAS) are attracting growing attention and becoming an important research area for Web engineering. On the basis of analysis of existing evaluation approaches for WAS, this paper presents a quantitative evaluation model for the performance and scalability of WAS. An example is given of the quantitative evaluation model application, in which a testing process is addressed and a testing result is correctly verified, the indications for enhancing the system performance and scalability are discussed as well. © 2005 ieee.

In order to cope with today's market uncertainties, manufacturing is required to rapidly adapt and react to changes and unpredictable scenarios. These are currently among the main research and development topics in order to reveal new approaches and methodologies to achieve these goals. The Industrial Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) created the IEC 61499 (function block) standard. This standard proposes an open architecture for distributed Industrial-Process Measurement and Control systems (IPMCS). The IEC 61499 defines the basic concepts and methodology for the design of modular reusable distributable systems, and paves the way for the new reconfigurable and flexible manufacturing. This paper presents the development of a software tool (IEC 61499 application Generator) that enables the deployment of IEC 61499 applications to scan-based embedded controllers. However, the IEC 61499 standard foundations rely on an event-based model. The paper describes an approach to implement an event-based architecture on a scan-based industrial controller. © 2005 ieee.

Several challenges and problems of developing, using and maintaining object-oriented application frameworks have been identified. It was discovered that companies attempting to build or use large-scale reusable framework often fail unless they recognize and resolve challenges such as development effort, learning curve, integratability, maintainability, validation, defect removal, efficiency, and lack of standards. Framework documentation plays a major role in facing the above challenges. It directly affects the learning curve, maintainability, and defect removal aspects of the application frameworks. We have studied various documenting approaches and concluded that the current approaches are not very effective in overcoming the above challenges, especially on the efficiency problem. So, in this paper we are going to apply machine learning using case-based reasoning (CBR) and rule-based reasoning (RBR) to framework documentation. We will come up with a documentation architecture that combines both techniques in order to come up with improved framework documentation. © 2005 ieee.

The Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) model promotes reusability of software services, achieved through the conscious application of the loose-coupling concept when assembling or building systems. In this SOA computing paradigm, heterogeneity is a key feature, from platforms to programming languages and messaging protocols. As such, invocations of services are expected not to be limited to XML or SOAP (as used in Web Services) only, but to be multi-protocol based. Furthermore, realisation of loose coupling would imply that the usage of services is not rigidly specified during design time, but able to be changed and configured during its lifetime. This leads to the desire also for runtime configurability of inter-service dependencies with dynamic invocations capability. This paper outlines an approach that allows for runtime configurability across different messaging protocols for dynamic invocation of services. This paper also discusses implementation examples of this approach, including the ability to handle inputs mismatch between services, using the aid of contextual mappings via a XML rule-based engine. © 2005 ieee.
