In 1996, Georgia Institute of technology completely revised its undergraduate curriculum as part of a process of switching from a quarter system to a semester system. Two elements of the new, combined electrical and computer engineering curriculum were that (1) DSP replaced circuits as the initial sophomore ECE course and (2) a new "capstone design" requirement was added at the senior level. As a result of these changes, a new course, real-time signal processing using DSP microprocessors, was created to fulfill the capstone design requirement. This paper presents a detailed description of the course and a detailed analysis of the course's performance over the past eight years. The author compares and contrasts the effectiveness of this course to earlier undergraduate courses that also covered real-time DSP theory and practice. The author also discusses the evolutionary effectiveness of modern DSP development tools in terms of ease of understanding, ease of use, and effectiveness as measured by student success.

Choosing the appropriate distributed object model is a multi-criteria decision problem. Performance is a key criterion that makes software developers be able to select the object-oriented system that best fit their requirements. Classical techniques and methodologies of performance analysis are either unsuitable or unnatural to capture performance behavior of Object-Oriented (OO) systems. In this paper, we present Performance-Based Model for Distributed Object-Oriented software (DOOS) and a methodology to analyze and evaluate its performance. The new model evaluates the overall time cost of DOOS system considering the communication overheads. while preserving the OO features such as encapsulations, information hiding, inheritance, Etc.

Agent-oriented softwareengineering is promising substantial improvements especially for the design of distributed systems. But currently, there is a substantial gap between the massive number of publications advocating advantages of agents and the relatively small number of successful large applications. We present an agent-based cluster server application together with the analysis of advantages and disadvantages of the agent-based version compared to the non agent-based version of functionally similar cluster server application. Obtained experience is analyzed from the viewpoints of designers, developers and users. Observations confirm several previously published advantages of the agent-based approach and implementation;yet reveal some less familiar disadvantages as well. Overall, we argue that agents provide reasonable benefits already at this stage, while, we lack further agent-based research.

In this paper, for first time, we introduce non-recursive multirate architecture for modified Sinc filters. These novel structures are combined with Cascaded Integrator-Comb (CIC) non-recursive structures and new general non-recursive architecture is proposed. Non-recursive structure can be achieved for any decimation factor that is of integer multiple form. For every stage, polyphase decomposition can be used. Polyphase decomposition combined with multistage structure result in power efficient architecture with greatly increases maximal sample rate as demonstrated with example.

This paper presents a method, which performs edge stereo matching at different levels, from significant edges to less significant ones. At each level, the process starts by selecting significant edges with respect to their gradient magnitude. The selected edges are then matched in order to obtain reference edges from which less significant edges will be matched in the next level. The matching procedure is based on a voting scheme by using local and global constraints. The performance of the proposed stereo matching method is evaluated for real-time obstacle detection in front of a vehicle using linear cameras.

In this scenario, middleware plays a key role as enabling technology toward the goal of development of integrated workspaces. This paper describes a novel collaborative software system and discusses its component-based architecture. The aim of the system is to integrate dispersed knowledge to deliver comprehensive workspaces. Component technology enables the development of open systems that can be easily modified to accommodate both new features and new interaction styles. A new differential input CMOS transconductor circuit for VHF filtering application is introduced. The new circuit has a very high frequency bandwidth, large linear differential mode input range and good common mode signal rejection capability. Using 0.35μm CMOS technology with 3 V power supply, the transconductor has a ±0.9 V linear differential input range with a - 54.6dB total harmonic distortion (THD) and more than 1 GHz - 3dB bandwidth. A 3rd order elliptic low pass gm-C filter with a cutoff frequency of 150MHz is demonstrated as an application of the new transconductor.
