In this paper, for first time, we introduce non-recursive multirate architecture for modified Sinc filters. These novel structures are combined with cascaded integrator-comb (CIC) non-recursive structures and new general non-recursive architecture is proposed. Non-recursive structure can be achieved for any decimation factor that is of integer multiple form. For every stage, polyphase decomposition can be used. Polyphase decomposition combined with multistage structure result in power efficient architecture with greatly increases maximal sample rate as demonstrated with example.

In systems consisting of multiple clusters of processors which are interconnected by relatively slow communication links and which employ space sharing for scheduling jobs, such as our Distributed ASCI Supercomputer (DAS), co-allocation, i.e., the simultaneous allocation of processors to single jobs in different clusters, may be required. We study the performance of co-allocation by means of simulations for the mean response time of jobs depending on the structure and sizes of jobs, the scheduling policy, and the communication speed ratio. Our main conclusion is that for current communication speed ratios in multiclusters, coallocation is a viable option.

This work presents a method, which performs edge stereo matching at different levels, from significant edges to less significant ones. At each level, the process starts by selecting the significant edges with respect to their gradient magnitude. The selected edges are then matched in order to obtain the reference edges from which less significant edges are matched in the next level. The matching procedure is based on a voting scheme by using the local and global constraints. The performance of the proposed stereo matching method is evaluated for real-time obstacle detection in front of a vehicle using linear cameras.

Discrete multitone (DMT) modulation is used for the efficient transmission of data over nonideal channels. By nonideal channel, we mean that the channel with the frequency response is not flat. Also the noise is present in this kind of channel. In recent years, optimization of filter banks for the DMT systems is considered. Recent researches focused on the orthonormal filter banks have shown that the principal component filter bank (PCFB) is optimal for this application. We focus on one class of biorthogonal filter banks and find the optimum solution for this class. We also have shown that the performance of this structure is better than the optimum orthonormal filter bank.

Recently we have proposed a recursive estimator for Renyi's quadratic entropy. This estimator can accurately converge the results for stationary signals or track the changing entropy of nonstationary signals. We demonstrate the application of the recursive entropy estimator to supervised and unsupervised training of linear and nonlinear adaptive systems. The simulations suggest a smooth and fast convergence to the optimal solution with a reduced complexity in the algorithm as compared to the batch training approach using the same entropy-based criteria. The presented approach also allows on-line information theoretic adaptation of model parameters.

The paper introduces an application using computer vision for letter hand gesture recognition. A digital camera records a video stream of hand gestures. The hand is automatically segmented, the position of the hand centroid is calculated in each frame, and a trajectory of the hand is determined. After smoothing the trajectory, a sequence of angles of motion along the trajectory is calculated and quantized to form a discrete observation sequence. Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are used to recognize the letters. Baum Welch and Viterbi path counting algorithms are applied for training the HMMs. Our system recognizes all 26 letters from A to Z and the database contains 30 example videos of each letter gesture. We achieve an average recognition rate of about 90 percent. A motivation for the development of this system is to provide an alternate text input mechanism for camera enabled handheld devices, such as video mobile phones and PDAs.

The capacity of a cellular MIMO system is limited by the additive white Gaussian noise, intracell interference from the other users within the cell and by intercell interference from users outside the considered cell. The receiver as well as the transmitter have perfect channel state information. We are interested in the limits of the MIMO channel capacity under the different types of noise plus interference. Therefore, we consider three scenarios in which the noise is subject to different constraints. In all scenarios the achievable capacity of the MIMO system with worst case noise is equal to the capacity of some MIMO system in which either the channels are orthogonal or the transmit antennas are not allowed to cooperate. Furthermore, the minimax expressions fulfill a saddle point property.

In this paper the concept of the electromyogram EMG and how the surface electromyogram SEMG signal is obtained have been given. Electromyogram system offers a great benefit to the sport field application. Due to their requirements SEMG systems has been designed and implemented. This system consists of three basic units. These units are: Detection, signal conditioning, and signal processing. It provides measurement of electrical activity of muscles, efficiency of electrical activity, explosion power (response velocity), and fatigue degree. These parameters are most vital to physical assessment in the sports field.

Since the advent of distributed computer systems an active field of research has been the investigation of scheduling strategies for parallel applications. The common approach is to employ scheduling heuristics that approximate an optimal schedule. Unfortunately, it is often impossible to obtain analytical results to compare the efficacy of these heuristics. One possibility is to conducts large numbers of back-to-back experiments on real platforms. While this is possible on tightly-coupled platforms, it is infeasible on modern distributed platforms (i.e. Grids) as it is labor-intensive and does not enable repeatable results. The solution is to resort to simulations. Simulations not only enables repeatable results but also make it possible to explore wide ranges of platform and application scenarios. In this paper we present the SimGrid framework which enables the simulation of distributed applications in distributed computing environments for the specific purpose of developing and evaluating scheduling algorithms. This paper focuses on SimGrid v2, which greatly improves on the first version of the software with more realistic network models and topologies. SimGrid v2 also enables the simulation of distributed scheduling agents, which has become critical for current scheduling research in large-scale platforms. After describing and validating these features, we present a case study by which we demonstrate the usefulness of SimGrid for conducting scheduling research.

This paper presents handoff management schemes for synchronization algorithms for wireless multimedia systems. The synchronization and handoff management schemes allow mobile hosts to receive time-dependant multimedia streams without delivery interruption while moving from one cell to another. They also maintain the correct ordering of the media components, through the execution of the wireless multimedia application by a means of timestamped messages passed among mobile hosts, base stations and servers. The timestamp values are used to compute the delay for each multimedia unit for each server. Furthermore, the proposed schemes always search for a quasi-receiver among the base stations with which the mobile hosts can communicate to synchronize multimedia units. We discuss the algorithms and present a set of simulation experiments that evaluate the performance of our schemes, using message complexity and buffer usage at each frame arrival time. Our results indicate that our schemes exhibit no underflow or overflow within the bounded delivery time. © 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
