With the network and computing environment improvement in both wireless and wired area, mobile or portable devices like palmtops and notebooks have become prevalent. They are even considered as essential ingredients of the business workplace. Thus this mobile business environment should be accommodated in the business automation systems like workflow management systems (WFMSs). Researchers have focused on disconnected operation to provide continuous and safe services for the mobile devices in various fields. However disconnected operation has not been fully addressed in the area of WFMSs at all. We analyze the type and scope of disconnected service in WFMSs through the in-depth analysis of workflow task models. Based on this analysis, we show and discuss four general issues that should be addressed to support disconnected operation in WFMSs. The discussions are mainly focused on voluntary disconnection in the wired environment and issues like task classification, task relevant data handling, application handling, and task state emulation are included. © 2001 ieee.

Mobile agents are a useful paradigm for the development of complex Internet applications. However, the effective development of mobile agent applications requires suitable models and infrastructures. This paper proposes an organizational approach to the design and development of mobile agent applications and describes an infrastructure designed to support such approach. The approach models the Internet as a multiplicity of local and active organizational contexts, intended as the places where coordination activities of application agents occur and are ruled. The MARS coordination infrastructure supports the development of mobile agent applications by implementing organizational contexts in terms of programmable tuple spaces. An application example related to the use of mobile agents to access and organize tourist information is introduced and discussed through the paper to clarify our approach and to show its effectiveness.

Distributed object technologies offer access to data and services virtually everywhere in a distributed application system and introduce a high degree of freedom in application design. In order to retain flexibility even during business process re-engineering, the explicit modelling of business process aspects separately from the application system components is desired. The most prominent technology to serve this purpose is workflow management, which is a groupware technology and mainly focuses on the collaboration of people. Recently developer of distributed object platforms start to provide services that initially aimed at managing distributed transactions but also allow for the modelling and enactment of communication sequences between distributed objects. We have applied the workflow management approach practically within a heterogeneous laboratory environment integrating typical radiology application systems. Here, we compare our experiences with what can be expected from such a distributed object platform taking Microsoft's BizTalk as example.

This work gives an analytical performance measure of the common packet channel (CPCH) in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA) systems. The CPCH procedure of the channel assignment (CA) mode is modeled as an Erlang loss network, and a technique for analyzing Erlang loss networks is applied to get the expression of the system throughput and delay. The theoretical results are verified with computer simulations.

In this paper, after an enumeration of software for scientific computation and data visualisation, we give a set of demands for this sort of software. We discuss the architecture of a scientific data visualisation software system entitled "Graph Server" which was designed and developed by the authors. The examples of 2D/3D hodograph curve, 2D/3D histogram, 3D surface and 2D area are presented.

Internet information providers need to continually analyse and update their offerings in order to survive in today's marketplace. As Web sites and their information content grow larger, this becomes a more and more difficult task. software engineers have had to deal with the problem of understanding and maintaining complex and interconnected documents (in the form of program source code) for a long time, and a number of tools exist to support them in this task. The paper describes commonalities in the maintenance of software systems and Web sites and presents a case study in the application of a software reengineering tool for Web site analysis.

Our research aims at improving system level quality of a network by introducing a network engineering (NE) process framework. NE advocates a life cycle, process framework for network design, development, operations and maintenance, as a parallel to the software and systems engineering life cycle. NE was introduced with the spirit of improving the QoN, which is a related but orthogonal R&D area to the existing QoS R&D efforts. QoN is defined as the ability of an information technology (IT) system to meet user expectations by providing the intended functionality or desired information in a reliable, predictable and timely fashion. Our current research in NE has resulted in the development of the preliminary version of the Network Maturity Model (NMM) (http://***). The NMM is a qualitative and predictive model to evaluate the QoN for network systems. NMM also allows for an NE process to evolve with predictable cost-benefit tradeoff. © 2000 ieee.

The study of software product line addresses the issues of engineering software systems families, or collections of similar software systems. The objective of a software product line is to reduce the overall engineering effort required to produce a collection of similar systems by capitalizing on the commonality among the systems and by formally managing the variation among the systems. This is a classic software reuse problem (C. Krueger, 1992). The primary focus of software product line research has been on domain analysis and modeling, architecture modeling, software reuse repositories, generators, and process definition. In contrast, for engineering single systems, these technologies and techniques provide significant value, while for engineering software product lines the conventional wisdom suggests they are essential. We hypothesize, however, that domain analysis, architecture modeling, software reuse repositories, generators, and process definition are simply compensating for a void in the existing software engineering technology space and that this void can be filled by a more simple, powerful, and concise technology for engineering software product lines. This new technology then redefines the status of domain analysis and the other existing technologies so that they have the same status in software product line development that they do in single system development: valuable engineering technologies but not necessarily requisite. © 2000 ieee.
