We advocate the reuse of design knowledge rather than code as the most effective means for obtaining productivity and quality improvements in software engineering activities. This knowledge comes in several forms; domain analysis, generative knowledge, and knowledge of the structure of a particular system in terms of the domain and how domain concepts are implemented. We are building and using a practical large-scale software (re)engineering tool, the Design Maintenance System (DMS) that implements these ideas. Reusing design knowledge, DMS is able to automate many interesting engineering activities: analysis, reverse engineering, forward synthesis, and eventually software maintenance via design maintenance. Code reuse methods are incapable of providing strong support for these activities. However, many issues involved in DMS construction are driven by the scale of the problem; number of languages, sheer code volume, amount of knowledge involved, and computational energy required.

The study of software product line addresses the issues of engineering software systems families, or collections of similar software systems. The objective of a software product line is to reduce the overall engineering effort required to produce a collection of similar systems by capitalizing on the commonality among the systems and by formally managing the variation among the systems. This is a classic software reuse problem (C. Krueger, 1992). The primary focus of software product line research has been on domain analysis and modeling, architecture modeling, software reuse repositories, generators, and process definition. In contrast, for engineering single systems, these technologies and techniques provide significant value, while for engineering software product lines the conventional wisdom suggests they are essential. We hypothesize, however, that domain analysis, architecture modeling, software reuse repositories, generators, and process definition are simply compensating for a void in the existing software engineering technology space and that this void can be filled by a more simple, powerful, and concise technology for engineering software product lines. This new technology then redefines the status of domain analysis and the other existing technologies so that they have the same status in software product line development that they do in single system development: valuable engineering technologies but not necessarily requisite.

The article proposes a framework based design for implementing application protocol stacks. According to protocol specifications, network applications are usually conceived through a layered software architecture centered around the concept of messages sent or received asynchronously. Of particular interest are application protocols residing on transport protocols. When implementing several application protocols, one should look for software reuse in order to promote modular design and limited development effort. Such a goal is reached through the use of a software framework, providing a clear separation between reusable protocol-generic parts and isolated protocol-specific parts. Such a framework has been used to implement a protocol stack prototype. This latter experiment showed the power of a componentized object oriented framework and of common object oriented design patterns.

The cost of field failures is arguably a very important factor in judging the quality of software. It would be nice if field failure costs could be used before the software is released so as to improve its quality. We introduced the expected cost of field failures (Ntafos, 1997) as a measure of test effectiveness and demonstrated that significant benefits are possible even with rather crude cost and failure rate estimates. We discuss the main issues that arise in trying to reduce the cost of field failures through better test effort allocation. We introduce improved models and strategies and present analytical and experimental (simulation) evaluations.

An extension to the current IFPUG function point counting practices method is presented. This extension, called Full Function Points, has enabled Nortel Networks project teams to more completely scope the functional size of real time software projects and to produce early, accurate development estimates more consistently. Although the function point metric is widely used in many software organizations throughout the world to produce accurate design estimates early, the real time software industry acknowledges that the application of the IFPUG functional scoping method has not been sufficient to drive consistently accurate estimates for real time software projects. The paper illustrates how a Nortel Networks pilot has supplemented the IFPUG method using a Full Function Point approach, an approach that has pioneered the first successful application of Full Function Points to enable the generation of consistently accurate effort estimates in a real time environment.

In automated fingerprint identification systems, an efficient and accurate alignment algorithm in the preprocessing stage plays a crucial role in the performance of the whole system. We explore the use of genetic algorithms for optimizing the alignment of a pair of fingerprint images. To test its performance, we compare the implemented genetic algorithm with two other algorithms, namely, 2D and 3D algorithms. Based upon our experiment on 250 pairs of fingerprint images, we find that: genetic algorithms run ten times faster than a 3D algorithm with similar alignment accuracy; and genetic algorithms are 13% more accurate than a 2D algorithm, with the same running time. The conclusion drawn from this study is that a genetic algorithm approach is an efficient and effective approach for fingerprint image registration.

The ever increasing demand for high software reliability requires more robust modeling techniques for software quality prediction. The paper presents a modeling technique that integrates fuzzy subtractive clustering with module-order modeling for software quality prediction. First fuzzy subtractive clustering is used to predict the number of faults, then module-order modeling is used to predict whether modules are fault-prone or not. Note that multiple linear regression is a special case of fuzzy subtractive clustering. We conducted a case study of a large legacy telecommunication system to predict whether each module will be considered fault-prone. The case study found that using fuzzy subtractive clustering and module-order modeling, one can classify modules which will likely have faults discovered by customers with useful accuracy prior to release.

Dynamic memory management has been a high cost component in many software systems. A study has shown that memory intensive C programs can consume up to 30% of the program run time in memory allocation and liberation. Especially, in C++ programs, they tend to have object creation and deletion prolifically. The C++ memory allocation rate can be as much as ten times higher than the comparable applications written in C. Despite the importance of dynamic memory management in C++, there exist few software tools to study dynamic memory in C++. This paper introduces a tracing tool, called mtrace++, to study the dynamic memory allocation behavior in C++ programs. mtrace++ is a source code level instrumented tracing tool which produces records of allocation and deallocation information. mtrace++ identifies the origins of allocated memories and life-spans of objects. With limited overheads, mtrace++ can help programmers to solve dynamic memory problems with affordable cost.

An issue that the real-time software research community has long recognized as an important technological challenge but has not shown much progress in meeting the challenge is to guarantee response times of real-time distributed systems. Two basic problems must be addressed to effectively meet this challenge: establishment of the distributed real-time program structure and the system infrastructure structure that enable systematic analysis of the worst-case time behavior of the application systems; and development of tools which perform automated analysis of the worst-case time behavior while leaving only minimal work to the designers. Research on the first problems has produced some useful results in recent years. Time is thus ripe for tackling the second problem on the basis of those recent developments in handling the first problem. This paper describes a desirable systematic timing analysis process which builds upon the recent results in the first problem area. An outline of a desirable analysis tool is also presented.

The user interface design aims at enabling work and other activities to be performed more effectively, efficiently and with more enjoyment and satisfaction. The user interface of multiuser Web applications is a medium where all objects being shared on it can be viewed independently from the geographical location and its users can interact with each other in real time. Designing such an interface for users working collaboratively requires dealing with a number of issues. Herein, our concerns lies on the control component of human-computer interaction design and corresponding user interface (UI) software that implements it. Our interactive systems development process based on the MPX Mapping from PAN (Protagonist Action Notation) into Xchart (eXtended Statechart) is used to improve the product quality. Then, we illustrate this methodological approach through a case study of a Web interactive system.
