The object-oriented features such as encapsulation, inheritance, and state dependent behavior raise new problems in software testing. In this paper, we describe a reverse engineering approach for software testing of object-oriented programs. The approach is based on a graphic model which consists of three types of diagrams: object relation diagram (Ord), block branch diagram (BBD), and object state diagram (OSD). An Ord presents the inheritance, aggregation, and association relations among the object classes, a BED presents, for a member function, the control structure, the input parameters and output parameters, the external data that are used and affected, and other functions that are invoked. An OSD presents the states and state transitions. These diagrams are generated from C++/Java source code and may be used to 1) provide guidance on the order to test the classes and member functions;2) prepare member function test cases;3) prepare test cases for object state dependent behaviors and interaction between such behaviors;and 4) provide graphic display of coverage information to a tester.

Recent market conditions have forced companies to change their policies regarding systems development. Open architectures and distributed paradigms become first role players in the implementation of flexible, componetised systems that can easily adjust to changing requirements. However, there is a significant obstacle put across by the legacy, which still performs the main volume of business processes and store the majority of the Enterprise Knowledge. Hence, a problem occurs regarding how we obtain integration of systems and knowledge when the legacy still dominates in the enterprise environment. In this paper we advocate that knowledge repositories may provide a solution by becoming the key components of distributed environments. Repositories support strong mechanisms for meta-level information management and systems specification. We present how a repository manages to integarte Enterprise Knowledge and IS at a conceptual level. Subsequently, we analyse the way a repository-bared framework integrates knowledge and software components at a functional level. The analysis is based on the DELOS environment [12]. An example practically exhibits the results achieved.

Role theory [6] deals with collaboration and coordination;roles have also been applied to distributed systems management [31] and to agent and robot systems [2, 43]. However, it has been difficult to realize these representations in an automated or semiautomated system, due to the lack of adequate formalism and corresponding abstractions in software. Role models are relatively new concepts in object-oriented software engineering that emphasize patterns of interaction and therefore rectify this situation for software analysis and design. This paper provides examples of agent role models and explains how role modelling can be used to facilitate agent system analysis and design. We also discuss role model implementations based on two approaches: The Role Object pattern and aspect-oriented programming (AOP).

A data acquisition system to be intended for working in real time has been developed. The system is an aggregation of measuring, computing and controlling tools located on the main interface bus of a computer. The system is based on a build-in data acquisition board. A software can be realized in any programming language. For example, Lab VIEW graphical language was used. Members of the COTS-based system initiative at the software engineering Institute have developed the Generic Enterprise Ensemble (GEE), a generic approach to building distributed, transaction based, secure enterprise information systems (EIS). GEE is a tool to help in the selection of technologies and architectural choices when building enterprise information systems. Enterprise JavaBeans/sup TM/ (EJB) is a specification from Sun Microsystems for an application server based on Java technology. a comparison is made between GEE based solutions and off-the-shelf solutions based on the EJB specification. © 1999 ieee.

An intelligent computer aided engineering (CAE) control design software and hardware package for power system control has been developed in this project. This package encompasses advanced control technologies, software technologies and hardware technologies. It allows the whole design process to be cycled easily and efficiently, thus considerably speeds up the control system design and prototyping. The main objectives of the project consist of: 1) Modeling of StatCom (Static Commutator) in power system;2) Development of computer aided engineering platform;3) Design and development of digital signal processor (DSP) based controller;4) Development and application of advanced control techniques for StatCom. Three types of controller, namely PI-Auto-tuning, Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and Iterative Learning Control (ILC) are incorporated in the platform. For the real-time control, DSP-based hardware controller is designed and implemented. Field-site experiments were carried out on 10Kvar StatCom to show the performance of the controller and results are satisfactory.

On-board preventive maintenance: a design-oriented analytic study for long-life applications

With respect to the long-life missions associated with NASA's X2000 Advanced Deep-Space System Development Program, reliability implies a system's continuous operation for many years in an unsurveyed radiation-intense environment. Further, the stringent constraints on the mass of a spacecraft and the power on-board create unprecedented challenges on the means for achieving the ultra-high mission reliability. In this paper, we present an approach to on-board preventive maintenance which rejuvenates a system by letting system components rotate between on-duty and off-duty shifts, slowing down a system's aging process and thus enhancing mission reliability. By exploiting nondedicated system redundancy, hardware and software rejuvenation are realized simultaneously without significant performance penalty. Our design-oriented analysis confirms a potential for significant gains in mission reliability from on-board preventive maintenance and provides to us useful insights about the collective effect of age-dependent failure behavior, residual mission life, risk of unsuccessful maintenance and maintenance frequency on mission reliability. In this paper, we develop a modeling method based on stochastic Petri nets (SPN) to allow user-perceived measures in voting-based replicated systems to be estimated. The merit of our approach is that user-arrival, maintenance, and node/link-failure or -repair processes are fully decoupled, thus allowing us to remove some unnecessary modeling assumptions and also to keep track of states in which the system is unavailable to users from the user's perspective. We apply our method to contrast user-perceived availability and performance measures under dynamic and static voting algorithms in a 3-node, fully-connected network and discover that (a) for user-perceived availability, the conditions under which static voting is better than dynamic voting, or vice versa, are largely determined by the user workload; (b) for user-perceived response time, static voting is always better than dynamic voting. We give some physical interpretation of the analysis result. Our method is generic in nature and can be applied to analyzing other voting algorithms or network structures for replicated data management.

The designation "fault tolerant software" has been used for techniques ranging from roll-back and retry to N-version programming, from data mirroring to functional redundancy. If the term is to be meaningful, qualifying definitions are required. This paper attempts to provide these by analyzing the capabilities of representative software fault tolerance techniques described in prior literature and marching these with the needs of representative environments in which fault tolerance ma? be applied This paper suggests Jive categories for comparison of application needs and fault-tolerance capabilities: accuracy, deadline, state preservation, coverage, and economy of resources. It then shows how representative needs and capabilities can be characterized in identical terms by these categories. Algorithms are developed for either ranking (ordering) the importance of categories or assigning weighting factors to them. The algorithms suggest partially-suitable matches where there is no complete match between the application needs and the capabilities of fault-tolerance techniques. Examples of the selection technique are presented.
