Group communication protocols discussed so far can be adopted for only a small group from the processing and communication overhead point of view. In this paper, we discuss how to provide a large-scale reliable group communication among several hundreds entities interconnected by a high-speed one-channel network. A group of entities is partitioned into disjoint subgroups named component clusters interconnected by gateways. The group communication protocol is executed in each component cluster and the gateways forward messages from a component cluster to the others. There exists only one gateway between every two different component clusters in order to prevent the proliferation and indefinite circulation of messages. By this protocol, the processing time and the length of messages of each entity can be reduced because each component cluster is smaller than the group.< >

We present an approach to application-level performance testing. This uses a popular test tool, TPNS (Teleprocessing Network Simulator) to simulate performance of an application. Our approach hinges upon a simple prototype to verify that the system performance falls within acceptable bounds. Once the initial prototype is developed, detailed tuning may take place. We present a case study in which we tested the performance of a large finance application. This approach led to critical performance tuning improvement. Due to this improvement, the average user response time in our simulations was reduced from 30 seconds to under 1.5 seconds. This simulation has been verified by actual system usage during the first two months of live operation in which the average response time has indeed been under 1.5 seconds.< >

We address the problem of scheduling hardware requests to a metacomputer environment. The environment may consist of a heterogeneous set of computing resources. A high level abstraction of the metacomputer is assumed to take care of the heterogeneity. The scheduling problem is considered in two parts. Some requests are extracted from the waiting room at first and scheduled afterwards by using bin packing to allocate the hardware resources. The bin packing algorithm is dynamically turned by the current mixture of the requests to tradeoff utilization versus response time. The extraction algorithm ensures prioritizing without starving lower priority jobs. The Implicit Voting System is compared to a well known bin packing algorithm by simulation. IVS improves the system utilization by 30% and simultaneously the average waiting time by 9%. Its behavior is also validated by integration into the Computing Center software, CCS. Currently, this software package serves a pool of different transputer based MPP-systems to a large user community.< >

Until the mid-80's, fuzzy logic in Northern Europe was a dedication among only a few specialists in the scientific community. From an engineering point of view, a major concern was always the lack of tools enabling serious developments. Sweden never accepted fuzzy logic as a technology for control applications. In Norway, there are several research units with fuzzy systems on their research agendas, but industrial applications do not seem to emerge other than accidentally. In Finland, industrial partners are often selective about preferring robust engineering instead of seeking for novel control technologies. However, as fuzzy logic is reaching a rapidly increasing audience through media and exhibitions, industrial interests find it unavoidable to look into the potentials of extending their application culture with the possibilities provided by fuzzy logic techniques. Especially in Finland, we are now witnessing something of a boom of industrial interests in applying neuro-fuzzy techniques for a wide range of applications. Several development projects are on-going, strongly supported by universities and research institutes, and this is also leading to software developments and toolkit selection developments being tailored to Finnish industrial needs. Funding is now also more accessible for developing solutions based on fuzzy systems. In this paper, we present a usage scenario for industrial applications, and software toolkits as developed for and on the basis of the respective industrial needs.< >

Virtual reality (VR) is emerging as an important approach to the modeling and simulation of complex systems, but software technology for scientists to build VR-based applications fosters the development of closed applications, each built from scratch. A scientist's ability to merge models and systems, once developed, is solely dependent upon his ability to 'hack' software, since the principles of VR system interconnection are poorly understood and no software engineering guidelines have ever been developed for use in VR applications. We are studying the area of interoperation among VR systems (i.e. the virtual environment) in order to discover essential principles governing their construction and effective use. Our approach focuses upon the control properties of interfaces between VR applications: existing VR applications are being examined in order to expose commonalities, and our abstractions of VR control behavior are being specified in terms of the software bus model of interconnection. This paper presents our vision for virtual environment infrastructure, and describes the current state of our work in progress. There are several direct applications of our VE exploration to collaboration infrastructure. First, some of the VR systems we are using allow collaborative interactions of multiple users. Secondly, our investigations involve combining the Polylith software interconnection technology with Trellis, a multiuser collaborative hypermedia technology.< >

Existing parallelizing compilers are targeted towards parallel architectures where all processors are dedicated to a single application. However a new type of parallel system has become available in the form of high performance workstations connected by high speed networks. Such systems pose new problems for compilers because the available processing power on each workstation may change with time due to other tasks competing for resources. We argue that it is possible for a parallelizing compiler to generate code that can dynamically shift portions of the application's workload between processors to improve performance. We have implemented a run-time system that supports automatically generated programs with dynamic load balancing. We describe this system and present performance measurements. We also describe the compiler functionality needed to generate parallel programs with dynamic load balancing.< >

application-specific computing systems are hardware and software systems designed specifically for a family of related applications. In contrast to developing algorithms to run on a general-purpose computer, application-specific system design techniques match the computing structure to the problem. Thus, application-specific computing systems can offer 100 to 1000 fold improvements in cost versus performance over general-purpose computers on applications such as signal processing, interactive graphics, heuristic search, numerical simulation, and many others. In this paper, we present a computational model for an application-specific multiprocessor system for multidimensional digital signal processing applications. © 1992 ieee.

Safety and reliability are of increasing concern as mechanical systems are replaced or upgraded with computer-based software technology as we move into the 21st century. As these systems are installed in ever increasing numbers, their impact on the safety of our environment, finances, and physical well-being grows. The operators, patients, owners, and customers of these systems want assurances that these systems are safe. The developers of these systems attempt to follow standards and industry recognized practices in the hope of providing this assurance. This paper is the result of an evaluation of domestic and international, industry and government accepted practices and standards relating to software safety and reliability. Standards were evaluated for similarities and variance. There are three areas of interest when discussing the development of safety-related software systems. These are the quality enhancing development processes, safety analysis techniques, and measurement techniques for assessing reliability or safety. © 1992 ieee.

In this paper, a simple software reliability model, the log-power nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) model, is studied. The log-power NHPP model has several interesting properties, such as simple graphical interpretations and simple forms of the maximum likelihood estimates for the parameters. We assess this model by considering its simplicity, data fitting and predicting ability. We have applied the log-power model to many sets of existing software reliability data. The results show that this model is able to fit different data sets and has a relatively high predicting ability. This, together with its simplicity and the graphical interpretation which provides us a useful reliability engineering tool, shows that the log-power model is an applicable software reliability model in practice. © 1992 ieee.
