A software reliability model based on nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) was proposed in Schneidewind [1] in 1975. This model seems to be the first of this kind. Since then, many other NHPP models have been suggested and studied by various authors. Surprisingly, the paper by Schneidewind has not been widely referred to. In this paper, we show that several NHPP models can be derived based on the general assumptions made by Schneidewind. Also, we note that in the original paper, there are several interesting approaches worth further consideration. To mention a few, Schneidewind modelled both the software correction process and the software detection process. Methods of weighted least squares were adopted together with the software reliability forecasting based on previous measurements. In this paper, the Schneidewind model is revisited and some further research results are presented. © 1992 ieee.

The Hyper-Geometric Distribution Model (HGDM) has been presented as a software reliability growth mode] with the capability to make estimations for various kind of real observed test-and-debug data. With the HGDM, the discovery and rediscovery of faults during test-and-debugging has been discussed. One of the parameters, the "ease of test" function w(i) represents the total number of faults discovered and rediscovered at a test instance. In this paper, we firstly show that the "ease of test " function w(i) can be expressed as a function of the test coverage for software under test. Test coverage represents a measure of how much of the software has been tested during a test run. Furthermore, the ease of test function w(i) can integrate a user experiencedbased parameter c that represents the strength of test cases to discover faults. This parameter c allows the integration of information on the goodness of test cases into the estimation process. The application of the HGDM to a set of real observed data clearly shows that test coverage measure can be integrated directly into the "ease of test" function w(i) of the model. © 1992 ieee.

This paper describes an information distribution system that merges the personal computer (PC) and facsimile technologies to enhance and expand the capabilities of existing stand-alone facsimile machines. The goal is to identify and develop mechanisms to reliably dispatch or receive a page of text or graphical material to or from any place worldwide within one minute. To allow universal compatibility, the system is designed based on the CCITT recommendations for Group 3 fax apparatus. Automated sending and receiving processes are devised in a user-friendly, menu-driven environment to minimize human intervention. The information dispatching mechanism is integrated with existing PC wordprocessors, graphics editors, and image databases. In addition, the system software is implemented at the application layer of an OSI LAN model as a fax server to provide a cost effective solution for information exchange that rivals existing document delivery systems. © 1992 ieee.

Performance benchmarks are used to help decide the question, "Which system is faster?" With the increased use of computers in critical systems, we are seeing more and more applications of resources to improve system quality. However, there are no benchmarks that can be used to compare the dependability and robustness of systems in order to answer the question, "Which system is more reliable?" This paper presents an initial attempt at the development of a benchmark to gauge a system's robustness as measured by its ability to tolerate errors. The initial effort produced four primitive benchmark programs. They include file management system, memory access, user application, and C library functions. Each primitive benchmark targets a system functionality and measures its behavior given erroneous inputs. We present the motivation and experimental results for one of these primitive benchmarks in detail followed by an analysis of the results. A methodology is presented to combine the primitive benchmarks to form an overall robustness figure. Finally, a list of additional primitive benchmarks is suggested along with a discussion of our shortcomings. © 1992 ieee.

AnDeCS (=Analysis & Design of Controlled systems) is the DLR project for developing a coherent computer-aided technology for 'Concurrent Control engineering', which means multidis-ciplinary dynamics design integration with emphasis on controlled systems. The technological requirements, i.e. conceptions, methods, and software tools, for supporting end-user 'aims', a common view on method-experiments and model-experiments, multi-disciplinary information sharing and project teaming, are considered. Of particular interest is the AnDeCS 'dynamics-model bus' and the 'engineering-data bus'. Also dealt with is the layered development approach, which interrelates in a structured way data processing, software engineering, object-oriented data abstraction, and numerics, with specific (control- and multibody-) dynamics engineering methods, computational application modules, and high-level modular, multi-objective design experimenting. © 1992 Proceedings of the ieee International symposium on Computer-Aided Control System Design.

Suite offers several advanced interactive features missing from contemporary interactive systems including a generic direct-manipulation user interface;a flexible input model offering benefits of both incremental and delayed feedback;customizable system-provided dialogue managers which relieve applications from managing their user interfaces;loose physical coupling between an application and its dialogue manager, that is, execution of these components in different address spaces, residing possibly on different hosts;interactive specification of customizable properities of user interfaces;and IS-A and IS-PART-OF inheritance to reduce the effort required to specify these properities. It complements recent work done in programming languages, databases, operating systems, and distributed systems. In this paper, we take the reader on a tour of the Suite user interface software, highlighting its distinguishing features. © 1990 ACM.

The construction and maintenance of interactive user interfaces have been simplified by the development of a generation of software tools. The tools range from window managers, toolkits, and widget sets to user interface management systems and knowledge-based design assistants. However, only a small number of the tools attempt to incorporate principles of good design. They offer no help with decisions regarding the variety of input devices and methods available. In this paper we briefly describe a methodology for interaction technique selection based on natural physical analogs of the application tasks. Special emphasis is given to the physical characteristics of input devices and the pragmatics of their use. The methodology is incorporated in a software environment named Toto which includes knowledge acquired from a variety of disciplines such as: semiotics, ergonomics, and industrial design. Toto also incorporates a set of interactive tools for modifying the knowledge and for supporting the selection of natural interaction techniques. A two phased design process (matching followed by sequencing) is embedded in the Toto rule base. Examples of the use of Toto tools are provided to illustrate the design process. © 1990 ACM.

The application of computers to design and manufacturing in engineering, CAD/CAM, is not new. However, it is only relatively recently that falling costs and technology advances in microelectronics have made CAD/CAM systems widely available to the mechanical industry. Automobile and aeronautical industries were among the pioneers. The primary advantages in adopting CAD/CAM are known and include faster response with improved documentation, improved accuracy and quality, and reduced lead times. We develop guidelines and criteria for selection of a CAD/CAM to meet mechanical industry requirements, including the interactive graphic system and associated software for design and software packages for manufacturing.
