Admission and power control schemes play important roles in deploying cognitive radio technology to cellular networks. In this paper, we propose a method to calculate the power scale factor, introduce two pre-admission control schemes, and reformulate the problem as a multidimensional knapsack problem. In addition, we propose a novel admission and power control scheme called JAPC-MKP. Simulation results show that our proposed JAPC-MKP can very closely approach the optimal results from the optimization software MOSEK, and greatly outperform the existing schemes in most cases.

With the increasing number and functional complex of automotive electronic equipment, more risks from systematic failures and random hardware faults may occur. In light of the fact that a failure of an automotive programmable electronic system may lead to injuries and even loss of life it is extremely important to perform the hazard analysis during the process of design and development of these systems to minimize the risk of the occurrence of such disastrous events. In this paper, a comprehensive hazard analysis method based on functional model is proposed. This method overcomes the narrower scope of individual techniques while obtaining the benefits of all of them. The process of functional modelling and safety analysis is outlined and the proposed hazard analysis method is applied to Automated Mechanical Transmission (AMT) control system and the analysis results are integrated.

In this paper we illustrate an ongoing project focused on intraoperative monitoring of haemodynamic stability and cardiorespiratory interactions, and present an example analysis of vital signs recorded synchronously from multiple monitoring devices through a LabView©-based acquisition software termed “Global Collect”. We present two moving average models for the black box estimation of the gains of the cardiopulmonary baroreflex control of arterial resistance and of ventricular contractility, based on invasive, continuous measurements of arterial blood pressure and central venous pressure. As a proof-of-concept, we analyze the effects of a fluid-challenge maneuver performed during major surgery, quantifying the mechanisms through which such maneuvers are able to increase cardiac performance and hence enhance venous return. These preliminary results of a pilot case study demonstrate the potential of investigating autonomic nervous system control of circulation under general anesthesia in advancing intraoperative patient monitoring and aiding maintenance of haemodynamic stability in patients undergoing major surgery.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) systems allow user to operate devices without muscular activation and experimental results indicate that they can induce activity-dependent plasticity. A BCI system has two key features: exploitation of brain signal changes induced by the cognitive task assigned to the user and mutual learning. With respect to the first feature, BCI users can learn to control and hence change their cortical activity, for example by performing a motor imagery task. Mutual learning, on the other hand, is set up between users, which have to learn how to control their brain activity, and the classifier used for learning and categorize brain signal changes. This mutual learning can be mediated by the use of feedback, which in turn can be discrete or continuous, abstract or realistic and so on. Motor imagery represents a promising approach for stroke rehabilitation, thus a BCI based on a motor imagery paradigm could be a useful tool. Nevertheless, in stroke rehabilitation settings two issues are emerging which are also crucial for motor imagery BCIs. The first one relates to the importance of recognize the imagery ability of the subject, the second one to the importance of feedback in re-learning of motor skills. The present study relates to this second issue and it is aimed at investigating attitudes of BCI users towards feedback. We considered a sample of six healthy males, using an EEG-based BCI and executing a Motor Imagery task without feedback (training phase) and with feedback (performance phase). A horizontal bar of varying length depicted on a computer screen was used as feedback medium and overall accuracy data were matched with neurophysiological data acquired from P z and O z . Results could be of importance for BCI use as neurorehabilitation tool in stroke rehabilitation protocols since they suggest that some subjects could need an increased cortical activation in order to deal with a stimulus like visual feedback. This paper describes a methodology based on Gaussian distribution approach for generating capacity reliability evaluation of a power system. The presented methodology has developed using continuous probability distribution function. The failure probability evaluation of generating system accounts the load models as load duration curve and is based on maximum average generation capacity. The probability of load exceeding the generating capacity has also been considered in LOLP evaluation. The described methodology in this paper is based on safety factor concept and peak load considerations. The test results using proposed methodology and various discussions have been presented for various generating capacity and load data available at Vijay Wada super thermal power plant, A. P.;India. Obtained results from extensive testing of the proposed method at different generating capacity and load demand considerations of Indian power system confirm the validity of the developed approach.

The paper proposes a new method for sensorial integration within manufacturing systems. The control scheme is a holonic one, namely a PROSA reference architecture is considered. Some principles regarding the way the coordination and planning mechanisms have to be adapted for an enhanced sensorial integration are investigated. These refer a plan-space planning approach that operates with partially specified plans, and an extended form of the Contract Net Protocol used to manage the holons' agents cooperation activities. The agent based implementation, which was made in the Jack software environment, was a further support for the sensorial information use by the holonic system deliberative components. © 2009 IEEE.

When developing embedded control software, control systems engineers model both the control algorithm and the system to be controlled, the so called plant, together. The models realised with tools such as Matlab/Simulink or Dymola are based on the systems' physical properties and provide an accurate view of the behaviour with regard to time and value. Nowadays control functionality is implemented in software, methods and models used in software engineering become more important. Alas, the abstraction level of control engineering models and software engineering models does not correspond. In early development phases software functionality is often modeled in an abstract way. In order to enable the developers to model a plant's behaviour at early development stages abstractly, we introduce behavioural models for continuous systems and a hierarchy thereof that allows coarse descriptions and stepwise refinements. With means of an example we show how this hierarchy can support the development process.

This paper presents investigations into the development of robust input shaping control schemes for antiswaying control of a double-pendulum-type overhead crane (DPTOC) system. A nonlinear DPTOC system is considered and the dynamic model of the system is derived using the Euler-Lagrange formulation. An unshaped bang-bang input force is used to determine the characteristic parameters of the system for design and evaluation of the input shaping control techniques. The positive and modified specified negative amplitude (SNA) input shapers with the derivative effects respectively are designed based on the properties of the system. Simulation results of the response of the DPTOC system to the shaped inputs are presented in time and frequency domains. Performances of the control schemes are examined in terms of sway angle reduction and time response specifications. Finally, a comparative assessment of the proposed control techniques is presented and discussed. © 2009 IEEE.

We experimentally identify the human body dynamics from motion capture data and contact force measurements. We make use of the 6 base-link equations to write the identification model. We have shown that the obtained system is sufficient to estimate the whole base inertial parameters. The method is computationally efficient;and allows to identify the pure inertial parameters without transmission, friction considerations. However finding persistent exciting trajectories is a drawback of the method. In this paper we put emphasis in describing persistent exciting trajectories that are suitable to obtain accurate results. We propose a method to automatically select the set of motions used for the identification in order to optimize the computation time and the accuracy of the identified parameters. For the experiments we make use of gymnastic motions. Each of the 3 subjects -of different body conformations- perform 29 types of motions. The identification method and the automatic motions selection method are both applied to obtain the inertial parameters of one subject. © 2009 ifac.

A firewall is basically a defense device to control incoming and outgoing network traffic. Policies and rules are important components of a firewall that allow packets to pass through by network administration. However, administrators do not know what the destination policies and rules are, and bandwidth control and management are not efficient. A concept occurred that firewalls can transfer and learn access control lists via Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). In this paper we propose transferring firewall rules using routing protocol. This will decide and select the best path for routers over transit autonomous systems. We also propose to develop routing protocol for reducing costs, for load sharing, and to utilize and optimize problems encountered in the implementation of traffic policies on network routers.
