This paper presents a method for illumination control for the image based rendering technology, which can be used in the medical exposure psychology therapy virtual reality to enhance the feeling of presence. With this approach, the image of the scene under a novel light condition can be synthesized by interpolation on the precaptured reference images under various illumination conditions. To handle the associated huge data volume, we introduce the spherical wavelet with baseline wavelet. Good features of the proposed method are demonstrated in the simulation results and the comparison with the JPEG approach. © 2003 IF AC.

modelling and quantification of biomedical data often requires segmentation as the pre-process where qualitative and quantitative evaluation measures of biomedical image segmentation play a crucial role in image analysis. The existing two-dimensional (2D) image segmentation evaluation measure and comparison techniques provide limited measurements when applied to three-dimensional (3D) image array corresponding to a stack of 2D slices and are not as practical. In this paper, we propose an approach to evaluate the quality and the accuracy of 3D image segmentation results using similarity indices based on both overlapping volume and edge based techniques. While the edge based technique was more sensitivity in detecting segmentation misclassifications, it was affected by the orthogonal data set (axial, coronal or sagittal) used for evaluation. Thus it is important for segmentation measures to consider the 3D data set as a whole, rather than a stack of independent 2D images. © 2003 IF AC.

Artificial life approach for continuous optimisation of non-stationary dynamical systems

In this paper, we develop an intelligent system to approach dynamical optimisation problems emerging in control of complex systems. In particular our proposal is to exploit the adaptivity of an artificial life (alife) environment in order to achieve "not control rules but autonomous structures able to dynamically adapt and to generate optimised-control rules". The basic features of the proposed approach are: no intensive modelling (continuous learning directly from measurements) and capability to follow the system evolution (adaptation to environmental changes). The suggested methodology has been tested on an energy regulation problem deriving from a classical testbed in dynamical systems experimentations: the Chua's circuit. We supposed not to know the system dynamics and to be able to act only on a subset of control parameters, letting the others vary in time in a random discrete way. We let the optimisation process searching for the new best value of performance, whenever a drop due to changes in fitness landscape occurred. We present the most important results showing the effectiveness of the proposed approach in adapting to environmental non-stationary changes by recovering the optimal value of process performance.

The use of formal probabilistic modelling together with advanced statistical inference in communications engineering, has the potential of providing a powerful workbench for deriving conclusions about the behaviour of systems and sources of data and therefore developing innovative and efficient control and management strategies of communication systems. Targeting the efficient dimensioning of systems and resources in order to make possible the provision of high quality and larger-choice services to the end-users, this paper proposes the use of a Bayesian framework in video broadband communications. In the context of the combined transmission of several good-quality video sources, such as a digital television broadcast service, using VBR video encoding algorithms and based on prior beliefs and statistical models, an intelligent multiplexer is capable of predicting the probable amount of free space and fill it with extra services or increase the quality of the transmitted channels.

5-[123I]iodo-A-85380, namely 5-iodo-3-(2(S)-azetidinylmethoxy)pyridine, is a new, highly selective radioligand with favourable properties for in vivo imaging of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The aim of this work was to study the identifiability and stability of nAChR parameters in baboon brain using different tracer kinetic modelling strategies with shortened scan durations. Dynamic SPECT imaging studies were performed on two anaesthetised baboons for 3 hours. Kinetic analysis based on 2- and 3-compartment models was used to derive the receptor parameters, including the binding potential (BP) and the volume of distribution (Vd), using the arterial plasma time-activity curves as the input function. Based on the 3-compartment model, Vd was selected as an appropriate outcome measure to assess the parameter stability due to high variability in estimation of BP, Time-stability analysis indicated that 90 mins of data collection generated stable outcome measure for 3-compartment model and the use of the 2-compartment model produced outcome measure with a larger bias. Thus, the 3-compartment model is the model of choice for analysis of 5-(123I]iodo-A-85380 kinetics and the 2-compartment model is useful only when the data acquisition time is sufficiently long. The construction of a security policy becomes increasingly difficult because of the complexity of the factors to consider. As long as networks were composed of closed infrastructures, security relied on models based on the end-systems access control. Today, if these models still remain typical, they must be completed by the definition and usage of "security models for networks". The design of such models must allow to approach the security concerns in a pragmatic way rather than relying exclusively on the expertise of the network administrator. For this objective, we raise the question: when do we implement network security mechanisms? After shedding light on the weaknesses of the access control models, we show the strong tie between the policy defined by the system administrator and that defined by the network administrator. Then we define modelling tools and rules that start from the users rights to determine constraints on the filtering rules and encryption mechnisms to be used. A prototype called SPIDERNet implemented in PROLOG language validates our appoach.

Apart from providing high system capacity it is essential for mobile communications systems as UNITS to operate with low electromagnetic emission. Smart antennas are one promising technology to establish exposure reduction while upholding system capacity requirements. In this context, the main objective of this paper is to assess the performance improvements of practically applicable beamforming concepts for UNITS networks. The concepts illuminated are fixed as we as adaptive beamforming. To obtain suitable assessments we especially attend three essential aspects. First, proper SINR modelling is considered including spatially formed inter- / intra-cell interference as well as pilot pollution prevailing UNITS networks. Special interest is secondly given on the interaction between UMTS specific radio-resource management algorithms as power- / load control and the smart antenna concepts considered. Finally, we investigate mixed data rate traffic which is expected for UNITS. The simulations are carried out utilizing a combination of UNITS physical and dynamic system level simulators.

A new generic approach to model reduction for complex physiologically based drug models

This paper explores the identification problem when dealing with physiological models relating to anaesthetic drugs such as fentanyl. The Mapleson model for drug concentration, which will be the focus of this study, is described by algebraic equations, which are derived from the laws of physics and chemistry, and there are some limitations in its system's analysis, i.e. in the study of its relevant dynamics, and its exploitation from a control design viewpoint. Hence, we propose to represent this model via dynamic differential equations with a reduced number of variables using MATLAB-SIMULINK. Using Mapleson's approach for modeliing, the input-output data for each organ can be obtained under a particular drug regimen which in turn can be used to obtain a continuous time-transfer function fit for each of these organs.
