Microbubbles and nanobubbles have several characteristics that are comparable with millimeter- and centimeter-sized bubbles. These characteristics are their small size, which results in large surface area and high bioactivity, low rising velocity, decreased friction drag, high internal pressure, large gas dissolution capacity, negatively charged surface, and ability to be crushed and form free radicals. controlling and modeling fundamental properties such as nucleation and of the dynamics of these bubbles is key to successfully exploiting their potential in the growing number of applications such as biomedical diagnosis and therapy, antimicrobial in aquaculture, environment, engineering, stock raising and marine industry. Laser-generated bubble dimensions can be characterized with an optical setup employing a high power continuous wave green laser for bubble generation. In this work, non-resonant, self-excited due to structurally nonlinear properties of the hydrogel, bubble formation was modeled as functions of well-controlled parameters of the colloidal media that is multi-layered and anisotropic, engineered uniquely. We propose a rapid nonovershooting tracking controller for the continuous infusion of anesthetics and analgesics to prevent overdosing and other harmful side effects on patients. The controller utilizes a state feedback control design methodology for multi-input multi-output systems to achieve a closed-loop eigenstructure that yields a nonovershooting transient response. The method is combined with a global optimization method to achieve a rapid nonovershooting response. The controller uses an extended Kalman filter to estimate system states from measurable outputs, and integral control is added to achieve robust tracking. The performance of the method is simulated on 20 patient models in two groups, and the results are compared against another recent study from the biomedical control literature. Photothermal therapy has emerged as a potential modality to generate hyperthermia as cancer treatment due to its low invasiveness and its capacity to complement other cancer therapies. Undesired side effects can occur such as damage to surrounding healthy tissue and temperature increase to values that cause tissue carbonization and evaporation. For this reason, this research aims to develop a multivariable fuzzy logic controller that maximizes tumor thermal damage while keeping temperature within the recommended ranges and minimizing neighboring healthy tissue damage. Three inputs were contemplated for the control system: tumor thermal damage, future maximum temperature error and future healthy tissue temperature error;thirteen logic rules were used to determine the controller output, which was established to be the change in laser power. Results showed that the control algorithm successfully accomplished the proposed goals. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.

In order to improve the safety of rehabilitation training and estimate physical human-robot interaction(pHRI) force without force sensor, this paper designs a real-time interactive force learning controller in an End-Effector Type Robot. The adaptive sliding mode term in controller is used to solve the uncertainties in the robot modeling and inertial parameter measurements. The learning law term can estimate pHRI force. To investigate the performance of this controller, experiments were designed to repeat the tracking task on a circular trajectory. The result shows that this controller can make the tracking error and the estimate error of pHRI force gradually acquire a desired stability margin. The error of resultant force of pHRI between the estimating and the measuring by the force sensor is 2.87±2.50N. This controller enables the robot to exhibit high compliance and its estimation of the pHRI force takes less time and is more accurate. © 2023 IEEE.

To address the problem of water scarcity in the Huang-Huai-Hai region, this study proposed an intelligent water-saving irrigation control system based on soil moisture sensors and modeling technology. In this study, the irrigation system consists of irrigation model and hardware. Irrigation amount calculation models were developed using soil components and sensor data as model input based on the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum’s water transport and balance mechanism. Hardware includes functional modules such as irrigation and head control, and the core controller, developed using a microcontroller, controls the equipment and interacts with the data through multiple communication buses. In the irrigation control process, the irrigation head system uses core controller to manage the peripheral electrical equipment and frequency converter, achieving precise control of the head facilities and equipment. The rotational irrigation zone control employs power line carrier waves and LoRa wireless communication to send commands to solenoid valves and other devices for switching between rotational zones. The results showed that, compared with the local traditional irrigation method, wheat yield under this system increased by 8.41%, and maize yield increased by 0.99%. This novel irrigation system can improve irrigation water use efficiency and promote the sustainable development of agriculture.

The objective of this work consists of studying the feasibility to impose descending stair negotiation in the UGent Knee Rig (UGKR). The force and position reference signals for the control strategy are derived from literature. A mathematical coordinate transformation is developed to make the stair descent possible within the limitations of the UGKR. Kinematic measurements of the six degrees of freedom in the knee joint allow to assess knee instability. Therefore, a kinematic measurement method based on CT-images is used to measure the relative position of the bones during the stair descent. First, the study is performed on a mechanical knee hinge to evaluate the performance of the position and force control. Second, a saw-bone study is performed to assess the kinematic measurement. The results show the feasibility of the developed method to impose stair descent motions in future cadaver studies. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.

Most surgical interventions involve sedating the patient with a cocktail of substances having anesthetic effects. The procedure is usually performed by a medical doctor that continuously monitors and readjusts drug dosage with respect to the patient's response. Current advances in automatic control and biomedical engineering offer the possibility to reassign the anesthetist's task to real-time, highly-performant monitoring and control algorithms, with the purpose of providing a risk-free anesthetic experience. The present study combines the well-known benefits of fractional calculus in biomedical applications with the intricate tasks revolving around automatic anesthesia. The proposed fractional order control algorithms are developed based on an open-source patient simulator that combines hemodynamics and anesthesia in a single customizable framework. Testing and validation of the proposed strategy is successfully performed on a group of 24 different patients in the presence of surgical stimulus. The ultimate result is that the hemodynamic characteristics are kept within accepted ranges, while a certain level of anesthesia is achieved. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.

The estimation of lung mechanics' parameters and the patient's residual volitional breathing effort is a prerequisite to adjust the parameters of assisted ventilation in a patient-individual manner. A real-time capable approach is investigated that estimates the resistance and compliance of a first-order lung model in conjunction with the intrapleural pressure in real-time. Latter is a measure for the patient's breathing effort. A signal generator model in the form of a Radial Basis Function (RBF) network is assumed for the intrapleural pressure. The Gaussian basis functions are periodic with the breathing cycle duration. This approach does not restrict the signal form of the patient-driven pressure curve. Recursive Least Squares (RLS) with selective forgetting is employed to consider the different dynamics of the estimated model parameters. A time-discrete version of the lung model is used for RLS. Computer simulations reveal that the approach is feasible and that selective forgetting is necessary to obtain satisfactory estimation results. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.

COVID-19 induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ArdS) could have two different phenotypes, which was reported to have different response and outcome to the typical ArdS positive end-expiration pressure (PEEP) treatment. The identification of the different phenotypes in terms of the recruitability can help improve the patient outcome. In this contribution we conducted alveolar overdistention and collapse analysis with the long term electrical impedance tomography monitoring data on two severe COVID-19 pneumonia patients. The result showed different patient reactions to the PEEP trial, revealed the progressive change in the patient status, and indicted a possible phenotype transition in one patient. It might suggest that EIT can be a practical tool to identify phenotypes and to provide progressive information of COVID-19 pneumonia. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors.

Correct torquing of bone screws is critical for positive patient outcomes in orthopaedic surgery. Under- or over-tightening screws can lead to thread stripping or screw loosening, leading to implant/fixation failure and potential tissue damage or disability. It has been proposed that an automated torque-limiting smart-screwdriver may be able to use model-based methods to determine the properties of bone as screws are inserted, and then use these to determine the optimal tightening torque and provide a torque-indication or -limitation to enforce this limit. Previous work focused on identifying the material properties from sensor data, but this paper will address the unanswered question of torque-limit prediction. Here we have developed a simple model of screw thread stripping. This model is based on the assumption that overtightening the screw will shear a cylindrical section of the underlying material. This simple assumption is augmented with a stress concentration factor dependant on the screw geometry. This model was tested against experimental stripping-torque data. We found that without the stress-concentration factor the model produced predicted torques with a strong linear relationship to the experimental values (R-2 = 0.98), however the magnitude of the predictions was 2-3 times too high. Including the stress concentration factor brought these predictions into the range of the experimental values, but the strong linear relationship from before was disrupted (R-2 = 0.80). Overall, this approach is promising for optimal torque prediction, but needs more thorough testing with a range of materials and screws, and has room for improvement with the stress-concentration factor.
