The objective of the paper is the description of the implementation of the WAVE model and language for highly parallel processing in open computer networks as well as an application of the distributed WAVE interpreter for modelling complex systems within an object-oriented philosophy. A general software system aimed at computer-aided design of controllers for robots and robotized technological systems is described in this paper. The software system includes modules for the synthesis of various levels of robot controller as well as controllers of complex robotized technological systems. The software includes simulation of robotic systems within manufacturing cells using various types of models: complete dynamic models, kinematic models and simple models in the form of finite automata. Using these models various algorithms for all control levels in robot controllers may be synthesized taking into account the actual interaction between the robot and its environment. The software system enables the solution of the important problem of the interaction between higher and lower levels of controllers. Finally, a general purpose controller as a target system for the proposed software is described. The controller is designed as an open system allowing the user to apply various control laws and to run in conjunction with an actual robot. The general software system together with the controller represents a powerful educational tool in modern robotics.

A new thermal control system based on the integration of a heat pipe is being studied to support the development of a lithium/thionyl chloride (Li/SOCL2) battery designed for future space applications. Therefore, a good understanding of the behavior of heat pipe in zero gravity (0-g) environment is necessary to make an accurate nodal model to predict its thermal performance integrated in space systems. This paper starts with a theoretical study of the heat pipes. We describe then an experimental rotating assembly constructed to simulated the 0-g operating conditions of the heat pipe in laboratory and to accurate the heat pipe model in O-g environment (model based on the nodal concept). We compare then the thermal behavior of the heat pipe with the mathematical model results to validate the nodal model. Results show that this new mathematical model can be used effectively to predict the thermal behavior of lithium cell integrating circular grooved heat pipe in 0-g environment.

The cyclone preheater tower is a system used by the cement industry for heat recovery of waste heat from the kiln. The system reported here uses three high performance horizontal cyclone dust separators. As a design aid for improving and interpreting the performance of individual horizontal cyclone dust separators, a finite difference prediction procedure has been used to solve the Navier Stokes Equation for fluid flow in the cyclones. The main results obtained can, therefore be summarised as follows:- a) Most of the particles are collected by the vortex collector pocket. b) The comparison of experimental and measured collection efficiency were matched in all cases.

It is well known that vortex amplifier (VA) circuits are liable to instability if the circuit is not suitably designed [1]. Piping attached to the control ports plays an important role in determining stability and is normally the most easily varied circuit elements to achieve stability. Any circuit can normally be stabilized using a single control pipe manifolded to the VA control ports. In safety control installations, it is often desirable to have two pipes leading to the control ports to cater for the remote possibility of blockage of the inlet to one of them. It is shown that there are favourable and unfavourable methods of manifolding the control ports and connecting a pair of control pipes. One method, using a single pipe branching via a tee into two pipes, is shown to give good stability. A computational procedure using transmission line modelling is shown to predict instability in good agreement with experimental observations and therefore provides a powerful circuit design tool.

The use of electrogastrography performed with cutaneous pregelled electrodes located in the region above the stomach to record electric control activity is discussed. A running spectrum analysis is used to provide a graphic representation of this activity. This study provides a method for the automatic determination of the gastric activity independently of the relative position of the stomach and the electrodes. The proposed method amplified the regular noise as respiration. An adaptative filter is needed to suppress this noise and improve the quality of the recording.

An automatic system which sets up high-level descriptions of the ECG, based on its medical shape features, from the low-level descriptions of the numerical techniques is discussed. These descriptions are organized into a description scheme, thus making it possible for physicians to use visual interpretation to control the whole description process. At each moment during an interpretation activity, the content of the data structure can be shown to the user in a graphical manner. Using this method, the progress of the process and the reasons why an interpretation strategy is followed can be controlled by the user.

A 3-parameters model for neural encoding is proposed and tested. It is essentially a leaky-integrator model with the leakage parameter variable and increasing with increasing the discharge rate. Computer simulations show how such a model is able to reproduce two relevant features of the neural encoding: (i) the phase-locking of the spikes on periodic stimuli;(ii) the adaptation of the neural discharge to step stimuli. Moreover, by assuming suitable values of the parameters, it is possible to fit quite satisfactorily experimental data.
