The papers referred to here are grouped in the proceedings of the conference under the heading: Single Neural Units and CNS (Central Nervous System) Complexes. The first (commentary) paper states that a review of the papers submitted to this symposium confirms the impression gained from a reading of the literature of the sixties that the major lines of theoretical development in neurophysiology were established in the first half of the cybernetic period. Foremost among these were (1) the development of the Hodgkin-Huxley equations predicting the ionic fluxes underlying nerve excitation;(2) the application of linear systems analysis in the study of neurological controlsystems;(3) the introduction of data processing and modeling techniques in the study of the brain slow wave and unit potentials;(4) the transfer of communications and information theoretic techniques to the study of signal detection and processing by the brain;(5) the recognition of certain quantal and random processes as fundamental to neuronal systems;(6) the extension of automata and computer theory to the conceptual formulation of certain brain functions;and (7) the elaboration of the first theoretical ideas of structure and function in sensory neuronal networks. Following is a list of titles and authors: Theoretical Neurophysiology; An Overview from the Underworld. By George P. Moore. Effects of Metabolic Inhibitors on and a Nonlinear Oscillator Model of Pacemaker Neurons. By M. Kim. Identification of Neural Pulse Modulators. By Michael J. Korenberg. modelling Depression of Monosynaptic Reflex Discharge. By Marcello Crivellini, Mario Decandia, Luigi Divieti, and Michele Maini.
