Challenges of implementing economic model predictive control strategy for buildings interacting with smart energy systems

When there is a high penetration of renewables in the energy system, it requires proactive control of large numbers of distributed demand response resources to maintain the system's reliability and improve its operational economics. This paper presents the Economic Model Predictive control (EMPC) strategy for energy management in smart buildings, which can act as active users interacting with smart energy systems. The challenges encountered during the implementation of EMPC for active demand side management are investigated in detail in this paper. A pilot testing study shows energy savings and load shifting can be achieved by applying EMPC with weather forecast and dynamic power price signals. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Boolean networks is a well-established formalism for modelling biological systems. An important challenge for analysing a Boolean network is to identify all its attractors. This becomes challenging for large Boolean networks due to the well-known state-space explosion problem. In this paper, we propose a new SCC-based decomposition method for attractor detection in large synchronous Boolean networks. Experimental results show that our proposed method is significantly better in terms of performance when compared to existing methods in the literature. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

A 6-DoF robotic testbed has been proposed, designed and developed for university students to learn the concepts of control systems theory in robotics. Testbed is comprised of two parts namely;6-DoF platform and ball-plate balancing payload. Robotic maneuvers in platform are generated through rotary Stewart-Gough mechanism using inverse kinematic algorithm. Ball-plate balancing payload is fixed on top of platform. This paper presents a comparison among generic testbeds, available at standard control system laboratories. Design of robotic platform along with payload has been detailed and tested with software simulations in MATLAB Simulink. This work explains complete electrical, mechanical and software design along with development, testing and results.

This paper presents a development of a semi-active prosthetic knee, which can work in both active and passive modes based on the energy required during the gait cycle of various activities of daily livings (ADLs). The prosthetic limb is equipped with various sensors to measure the kinematic and kinetic parameters of both prosthetic limbs. This prosthetic knee is designed to be back-drivable in passive mode to provide a potential use in energy regeneration when there negative energy across the knee joint. Preliminary test has been performed on transfemoral amputee in passive mode to provide some insight to the amputee/prosthesis interaction and performance with the designed prosthetic knee. Radial-axial ring rolling (HARR) is an industrial process that produces seamless metal rings with uniform cross-section using one radial and one axial rolling stage. Conventionally, the ring products are circular and the process is tightly constrained using guide rolls for stability, and to ensure the circularity and uniformity of the ring. Recent work has shown that, when guide rolls are omitted, stability can be maintained using differential speed control of the roll pairs. However, achieving uniform curvature in this unconstrained configuration was not always possible When the controller only centred the ring wit I In I. the rolling [Rill. In addition to the regulation of constant curvature in circular rings, differential speed control in unconstrained rolling;offers an opportunity to bend the ring about the mandrel to create shapes wall. 11011 uniform curvature, for example: squares, hexagons, rings with flat sections, etc. We describe a control technique for creating non-circular rings using the rolling hardware of a conventional RARR mill, machine-vision sensing and differential speed control of the rolling stages. The technique has been validated for an industrial material in numerical simulations using the finite element, method and also demonstrated on a desktop-scale RARR mill using modelling clay to simulate metal at elevated process temperatures. In recent years, the public demand of less invasive orthodontic treatments has led to the development of appliances that are smaller, lower profile and more transparent with respect to conventional brackets and wires. Among aesthetic appliances, removable thermoplastic aligners gained instant appeal to patients since able to perform comprehensive orthodontic treatments without sacrificing comfort issues. The aligner must deliver an appropriate force in order to move the tooth into the expected position. However, at present, the relationship between applied force and aligner properties (i.e., aligner's thickness) is poorly understood. In this paper, a patient-specific framework has been developed to simulate orthodontic tooth movements by using aligners. In particular, a finite element model has been created in order to optimise the aligner's thickness with regard to the magnitude of the force-moment system delivered to a mandibular central incisor during bucco-lingual tipping. © 2016 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda. In this paper, we present a new fault prediction model for a partially observable production system subject to two failure modes, namely a catastrophic failure and a failure due to the system degradation. The degradation process is described by a three states hidden Markov model(HMM). It is assumed that the time to sudden failure is dependent on system operating state. The parameter estimation procedure based on the Expectation-Maximization(EM) algorithm is developed. Explicit formulas for the conditional reliability function and the mean residual life are derived in terms of the posterior probability that the system is in the warning state. The method is illustrated using simulated data. The effectiveness of the proposed HMM to predict failures is then compared with the performance of the previously published HM model. Ultrasonic fields induced by HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) have been studied. Effect of input electrical power, harmonics and nonlinear propagation of the ultrasound fields has been quantized. Asymmetric waveforms with peak (+) pressures and peak (-) pressures were obtained both numerically and experimentally. Nonlinear propagation with harmonics output was dominant at higher intensities that leads to an increase of the compressional wave and a decrease of rarefactional wave. All measurements have been realized in the constructed system at National Metrology Institute of Turkey, TÜBİTAK UME. Set up includes a water reservoir, positioning system, HIFU transducers, needle hydrophone, power amplifier, signal generator, measurement and control devices which are all controlled by LabVIEW 8.1 software. P + , P- and P pressures have been determined theoretically for each waveform. Wave behaviors generated by the Khoklov-Zabolotskaya-Kuznetsov model (KZK model) and from experiments match in general. Decrease in size of focus point was shown in 3rd harmonic.

These proceedings present the written contributions of the participants of the 3rd International Meeting for Researchers in Materials and Plasma Technology (3rd IMRMPT) and the 1st symposium on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology which was held from 4 to May 9, 2015 at the Dann Carlton Hotel Bucaramanga, Colombia, organized by the faculty of science of the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) and the basic science department of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana. This was the third version of biennial meetings that began in 2011. The five-day scientific program of the 3rd IMRMPT consisted of 24 Magisterial Conferences, 70 Oral Presentations, 185 Poster Presentations, 3 Courses and 1 Discussion Panel with the participation of undergraduate and graduate students, professors, researchers and entrepreneurs from Colombia, Russia, Germany, France, Spain, England, United States, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Venezuela, among others. Moreover, the objective of IMRMPT was to bring together national and international researchers in order to establish a network of scientific cooperation with a global impact in the area of the science and the technology of materials; to promote the exchange of creative ideas and the effective transfer of scientific knowledge, from fundamental research to innovation applied to industrial solutions and to advances in the development of new research allowing to increase the lifetime of the materials used in the industry by means of efficient transference of the knowledge between sectors academia and industry.
