Aim of the research is studying how 3D digital models can be used for historic architecture's representation and documentation. The question is what are the characteristics of a 3D model to be suitable as a restitution of an architectonical surveying, that is to be a correct scientific description of architectonical data. An historical architecture is made by spaces, surfaces, volumes, materials, constructive systems, etc. and it's the synthesis of modification and stratification processes occurred during centuries. In particular it's important the representation of the constructive elements. The realization of Architectonical Information systems is useful. With the correlation between 3D digital components, historical documents and surveying data, 3D architectonical models can favour processes of knowledge, critical analysis and planning.

Starting from the fuzzy intensity-connectedness definition (chi-connectedness) and the related growing mechanism, a new method is here proposed for the unsupervised, automatic, global region segmentation of digital images, hereinafter referred to as the "Automatic Fuzzy Segmentation" (AFS). One of the major advantages lies in the strict and very simple integration between the analysis of topological connectedness and grey level similarities of the pixels belonging to the same region. By overcoming the previous drawback due to the need of some seed points selection, an iterative processing is here developed, able to adapt to the image content. The automatic selection of seed points is driven by intermediate connectedness results which alternates the analysis of inter-region similarities with inter-region separation measurements. The robustness of the method with respect to the three required parameters is discussed. Example cases related to the biomedical application domain are here presented and discussed.

Economic modelling and risk analysis are important tools in the appraisal of long term infrastructure and revenue-generating PPP-BOT projects. Analysis of a project is usually performed by considering a number of different scenarios and risk assumptions. The paper will attempt to develop a generalized model for analyzing life cycle financial modelling of PPP-BOT projects, which will provide the much required level of detail. In addition to sensitivity analysis of various risks at any specific time of the project, the proposed model is expected to provide their suitable management and control mechanisms. Various performance measures thus formulated, will together build the general economic model for PPP-BOT projects. Dealing with uncertainty and risk will be addressed by using decision making under uncertainty and risk methods via a case study.

The SIArch-Univaq is an Information System dedicated to the Architecture. It comes from a research made in the University of L'Aquila, Architecture and Urban Planning Department by the working group on the Architectural Survey and Graphic Representation. It was financed by the Italian Ministry of University under the PRIN 2006 measure. At present the SIArch-Univaq project is completed and tested on some different buildings classified as Historical Heritage, the software allows, at each building scale, to make a tri-dimensional model navigation asking for and consulting the large amount of informations stored in the database and, by mean of appropriate print layouts, having a very good support for the restoration or rehabilitation projects.

Movement analysis is a complex technique to measure and evaluate the movements of the human body. It can be adopted to support various activities, including rehabilitation. Over the last decade, many systems for capturing human movements have been developed. The most advanced motion capturing systems use image processing techniques through the analysis of live video streams collected from a set of video cameras. These systems are very expensive, need to be installed and used by professionals. Moreover, they are not intended for patient rehabilitation, at home. Rehabilitation can be facilitated and accelerated by using virtual reality and movement analysis assisting systems. This paper describes a rehabilitation system for domestic whole body rehabilitation. It is composed by a virtual reality environment where spatial information of the human body are collected by a 3D depth sensing camera and inserted into the virtual world. The system is designed to perform data analysis by an off-line motion tracking algorithm. A complete set of rehabilitation exercises have been also implemented. A trial exercise is illustrated and discussed.

The identification of relevant anatomies is fundamental for correct preoperative planning in oral implantology. In this setting, few state-of-the-art software products have the option of drawing the mandibular nerve canal, and almost none has a related automatic recognition functionality. We present an algorithm for the automatic recognition and drawing of the mandibular canal for oral implantology 3D-based software systems. The developed algorithm uses two user-identified extremities of the canal to determine a checkpoint at the mandibular foramen ascent base. It identifies the mandibular canal region moving within the radiographic volume, exploiting adaptive thresholds and ROI-intersection-based movement vectors. Finally, the software uses a Catmull-Rom-spline-based drawing feature to produce the canal 3D mesh. Experimental evaluation on scans of 7 human mandibles resulted in 13 successful identifications out of 14, while 1 failed due to extreme scattering.

We propose an extension of Hybrid I/O Automata (HIOAs) to model agent systems and their implicit communication through perturbation of the environment, like localization of objects or radio signals diffusion and detection. To this end we decided to specialize some variables of the HIOAs whose values are functions both of time and space. We call them world variables. Basically they are treated similarly to the other variables of HIOAs, but they have the function of representing the interaction of each automaton with the surrounding environment, hence they can be output, input or internal variables. Since these special variables have the role of simulating implicit communication, their dynamics are specified both in time and space, because they model the perturbations induced by the agent to the environment, and the perturbations of the environment as perceived by the agent. Parallel composition of world variables is slightly different from parallel composition of the other variables, since their signals are summed. Principle Component Analysis (PCA)-based statistical 3D face modeling using example faces is a popular technique for modeling 3D faces and has been widely used for 3D face reconstruction and face recognition. The capability of the model to depict a new 3D face depends on the exemplar faces in the training set. Although a few 3D face databases are available to the research community and they have been used for 3D face modeling, there is little work done on rigorous statistical analysis of the models built from these databases. The common factors that are generally concerned are the size of the training set and the different choice of the examples in the training set. In this paper, a case study on USF Human ID 3D database, one of the most popular databases in the field, has been used to study the effect of these factors on the representational power. We found that: 1) the size of the training set increase, the more accurate the model can represent a new face;2) the increase of the representational power tends to slow down in an exponential manner and achieves saturity when the number of faces is greater than 250. These findings are under assumptions that the 3D faces in the database are randomly chosen and can represent different races and gender with neutral expressions. This analysis can be applied to the database which includes expressions too. A regularized 3D face reconstruction algorithm has also been tested to find out how feature points selection affects the accuracy of the 3D face reconstruction based on the PCA-model.

In all societies, large resources are spent on health care. However, service quality is still unsatisfactory in large parts of the health care sector. One reason for this state of affairs is the complexity of health care organisations, which make them difficult to govern. Furthermore, due to the high degree of specialisation, health care organisations often need to cooperate, which adds to the complexity. One possible way to improve the cooperation and management of health care organisations is the use of performance management, which is a management approach aiming at optimising the performance of an organisation. The main instrument in performance management is the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPI), which measure how well an organisation fulfills its goals. Designing effective KPIs is a complex and time consuming task that requires substantial efforts. Therefore, there is a need for methods that support organisations in designing KPIs. This paper proposes a value and model driven method for identifying patient oriented KPIs.

Paper is focused on the monitoring and communication systems in the households for comfort of seniors and people with disabilities. It is focused on the selected wireless monitoring systems which are located in our Laboratory of Ambient Intelligence at the Technical University of Kosice (TUKE). Purpose of installed systems is to adapt the home environment to main human needs, like correct values of humidity and temperature, avoid dangerous situations like leakage of gas or water, smoke, and monitor users' health status in their households. Permanent monitoring via web console is available, and it offers another possibility to control home environment. This remote control can obviate risky situations in daily activities of seniors and helps their families to check the health status in their absence. Energy counter is used to review of energy spending of each device turned off and still plugged in. Counter can easily measure how much energy device spend, while idling in standby and then decide what to unplug for savings, what to sell and buy a newer, more energy efficient model, and what to leave. Result of monitoring and wireless communication systems is to improve the quality of life and autonomy of elderly and people with disability living at home alone.
