This paper reports a face identification system which makes use of a novel local descriptor called Local Ternary Tree pattern (LTTP). Exploiting and extracting distinctive local descriptor from a face image plays a crucial role in face identification task in the presence of a variety of face images including constrained, unconstrained and plastic surgery images. LTTP has been used to extract robust and useful spatial features which use to describe the various structural components on a face. To extract the features, a ternary tree is formed for each pixel with its eight neighbors in each block. LTTP pattern can be generated in four forms such as LTTP-Left Depth (LTTP-LD), LTTP-Left Breadth (LTTP-LB), LTTP-Right Depth (LTTP-rd) and LTTP-Right Breadth (LTTP-RB). The encoding schemes of these patterns are very simple and efficient in terms of computational as well as time complexity. The proposed face identification system is tested on six face databases, namely, the UMIST, the JAFFE, the extended Yale face B, the Plastic Surgery, the LFW and the UFI. The experimental evaluation demonstrates the most promising results considering a variety of faces captured under different environments. The proposed LTTP based system is also compared with some local descriptors under identical conditions.

A large quantity of documents used every day are still handwritten. However, it is interesting to transform each of these documents into its digital version for managing, archiving and sharing. Here we present Escritoire, a multi-touch desk that allows the user to capture, transcribe and work with handwritten documents. The desktop is continuously monitored using two cameras. Whenever the user makes a specific hand gesture over a paper, Escritoire proceeds to take an image. Then, the capture is automatically preprocesses, obtaining as a result an improved representation. Finally, the text image is transcribed using automatic techniques and finally the transcription is displayed on Escritoire.

The aim of this work was to develop a new methodology for automatic selection of the highest quality MODIS daily images, MOD09GA Surface Reflectance product. The methodology developed here complements the quality assessment of MODIS products with a geostatistical analysis of spatial pattern images based on variogram tools. The resulting selection is formed by 26 high-quality images (from an initial dataset of 365) from throughout 2007. Most images with geometric distortion problems, such as the bow-tie effect, were rejected. The automatic selection was validated by comparing it to manual selection, which showed that it achieved an overall accuracy of 71.4%.

Interactive pattern recognition concepts and techniques are applied to problems with structured output;i.e., problems in which the result is not just a simple class label, but a suitable structure of labels. For illustration purposes (a simplification of) the problem of Human Karyotyping is considered. Results show that a) taking into account label dependencies in a karyogram significantly reduces the classical (non-interactive) chromosome label prediction error rate and b) they are further improved when interactive processing is adopted.

We present a novel computational framework for automatic classification method by symmetries, for periodic images applied to content based image retrieval. The existing methods have several drawbacks because of the use of heuristics. These methods have shown low classification values when images exhibit imperfections due to the fabrication or the hand made process. Also, there is no way to give some computation of the classification goodness-of-fit. We propose to obtain an automatic parameter estimation for symmetry analysis. Thus, the image classification is redefined as distances computation to the prototypes of a set of defined classes. Our experimental results improves the state of the art in wallpaper classification methods.

In this paper, a semi-supervised approach based on probabilistic relaxation theory is presented. Focused on image segmentation, the presented technique combines two desirable properties;a very small number of labelled samples is needed and the assignment of labels is consistently performed according to our contextual information constraints. Our proposal has been tested on medical images from a dermatology application with quite promising preliminary results. Not only the unsupervised accuracies have been improved as expected but similar accuracies to other semi-supervised approach have been obtained using a considerably reduced number of labelled samples. Results have been also compared with other powerful and well-known unsupervised image segmentation techniques, improving significantly their results.

The present paper addresses the problem of the classification of hyperspectral images with multiple imbalanced classes and very high dimensionality. Class imbalance is handled by resampling the data set, whereas PCA is applied to reduce the number of spectral bands. This is a preliminary study that pursues to investigate the benefits of using together these two techniques, and also to evaluate the application order that leads to the best classification performance. Experimental results demonstrate the significance of combining these preprocessing tools to improve the performance of hyperspectral imagery classification. Although it seems that the most effective order of application corresponds to first a resampling algorithm and then PCA, this is a question that still needs a much more thorough investigation.

This paper describes an evolutionary algorithm applied to tuning of parameters of license plate detection systems. We consider both simple and compound detection systems, where the latter ones consist of multiple simple systems fused by some aggregation operation (weighted sum or ordered weighted average). With the structure of a system given by a human and fixed, we perform an evolutionary search in the space of possible parameter combinations. Several simple and compound structures are considered and verified experimentally on frame collections taken from highly heterogeneous video sequences acquired in varying conditions. The obtained results demonstrate that all considered systems can be effectively tuned using evolutionary algorithm, and that compound systems can outperform the simple ones.

Rodent models of myocardial infarction (MI) have been extensively used in biomedical research towards the implementation of novel regenerative therapies. Permanent ligation of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery is a commonly used method for inducing MI both in rat and mouse. Post-mortem evaluation of the heart, particularly the MI extension assessment performed on histological sections, is a critical parameter for this experimental setting. MI extension, which is defined as the percentage of the left ventricle affected by the coronary occlusion, has to be estimated by identifying the infarcted- and the normal-tissue in each section. However, because it is a manual procedure it is time-consuming, arduous and prone to bias. Herein, we introduce semi-automatic and automatic approaches to perform segmentation which is then used to obtain the infarct extension measurement. Experimental validation is performed comparing the proposed approaches with manual annotation and a total error not exceeding 8% is reported in all cases. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.
