We consider 2-D multiband signals, with a given bound on their spectral occupancy (the occupied fraction of the area of a bounding box of the spectral support). We propose a universal sampling pattern that guarantees well-conditioned reconstruction of all such signals. Such a universal sampling pattern can asymptotically achieve the Nyquist-Landau (1967) minimal sampling rate, determined by the spectral occupancy. Compared to 'Nyquist' patterns that avoid aliasing, for sparse spectral supports our design offers considerable reduction in sampling rate. Furthermore, we propose algorithms allowing reconstruction to be done blindly-without prior knowledge of the spectral support, other than its bounding box. The results apply to both continuous and discrete-time signals, and directly generalize to M-D. This work extends our analogous results for the 1D case.

We develop a compression algorithm that exploits this basis to obtain the most economical representation of an image in terms of textured patterns with different orientations, frequencies, sizes, and positions. The technique directly works in the Fourier domain and has potential applications for compression of richly textured images.

We present a motion analysis system of soccer games. The purpose of this system is to evaluate the teamwork quantitatively based on the movement of all the players in a game. Space management and cooperative movement by the players are two major factors for teamwork evaluation. To quantify them from motion images, we propose two new features; "minimum moving time pattern" and "dominant region". From experiments using actual game scenes, it is suggested that the proposed system can be a new tool for supporting to evaluate the teamwork.

Subband coding (SBC) was combined with visual patternimage coding (VPIC) to eliminate the blockiness and reduce the jagged edge artifact. A new set of 2/spl times/2 patterns was designed to code the highly compacted subband signals. The MSEs are significantly reduced by coding only the lowest frequency band. By making use of the inter-band correlation among various subband signals, a classified joint vector quantization (CJVQ) scheme was derived for coding the high frequency and residue subbands, using the pattern index in the low frequency band (LFB) as the classifier. The PSNR is further enhanced by up to 1.7 dB with less than a 8% decrease in the compression ratio.

Laminated sediments from lakes are of great interest to paleoclimatologists interested in high resolution records of past climate change. Laminated sediments from Lake Malawi in East Africa are investigated by X-ray analysis. Due to the physical nature of sediments, X-ray images having penetrated through sediments are corrupted by signal dependent nonstationary noise, which affects the accuracy and precision of time-series and the spectral analysis of patterns. Therefore, a nonlinear pre-filtering algorithm is proposed to suppress the noise, so that more stable and reliable analysis can be obtained. The algorithm is based on the generalized weighted regularization.

Separating halftones from text is an important step in document analysis. We present an algorithm that accurately extracts halftones from other information in printed documents. We treat halftone extraction as a texture-segmentation problem. We show that commonly used halftones, consisting of a pattern of dots, can be viewed as a texture. This texture exhibits a distinct spectral component that can be detected using a properly-tuned Gabor filter. The Gabor (1946) filter essentially transforms halftones into high-contrast regions that can be isolated by thresholding. We propose a filter-design procedure and provide experimental results.

Biometric identification (voice, face, iris, fingerprints, etc.) of individuals takes a lot of processing due to the complexity of these patterns. In this paper we present a study by computer vision of the palmar dermatoglyphics. It is shown that the extraction and interpretation of this kind of pattern is less complicated than the patterns previously studied-they allow a particular firm to be obtained for each individual which may be used for identification purposes or genetic studies. The procedure is composed of the following steps: image acquisition, edge detection, binary conversion, thinning operation, image reconstruction and image interpretation. Preliminary results show that this approach is a viable alternative for person identification.

Presents a modified Hopfield neural network with fuzzy c-means technique for segmenting multispectral MR brain images. The proposed approach is a novel unsupervised 2-D Hopfield neural network based upon the fuzzy clustering technique, and is suitable for parallel implementation in the application of medical image segmentation. The fuzzy c-means clustering strategy is included in the Hopfield neural network so as to eliminate the need of the weighting factors in the energy function which is formulated and based on a basic concept commonly used in pattern classification, called the "within-class scatter matrix" principle. From the experimental results, it is shown that a near optimal solution can be obtained using the proposed method.
