Recently, there has been a huge demand for assistive technology for industrial, commercial, automobile, and societal applications. In some of these applications, there is a requirement of an efficient and accurate system for automatic facial expression recognition (FER). Therefore, FER has gained enormous interest among computer vision researchers. Although there has been a plethora of work available in the literature, an automatic FER system has not yet reached the desired level of robustness and performance. In most of these works, there has been the dominance of appearance-based methods primarily consisting of local binary pattern (LBP), local directional pattern (LDP), local ternary pattern (LTP), gradient local ternary pattern (GLTP), and improved local ternary pattern (IGLTP). Keeping in view the popularity of appearance-based methods, in this paper, we have proposed an appearance-based descriptor called Improved Adaptive Local Ternary pattern (IALTP) for automatic FER. This new descriptor is an improved version of ALTP, which has been proved to be effective in face recognition. We have investigated ALTP in more details and have proposed some improvements like the use of uniform patterns and dimensionality reduction via principal component analysis (PCA). The reduced features are then classified using kernel extreme learning machine (K-ELM) classifier. In order to validate the performance of the proposed method, experiments have been conducted on three different FER datasets using well-known evaluation measures such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-Score. The proposed approach has also been compared with some of the state-of-the-art works in literature and found to be more accurate and efficient.

A driver’s gaze has often been used to estimate driver attentiveness or focus during driving. These works often rely on simple definitions of what it means to "see", namely, a driver’s gaze falling on an object for a single frame. In this work, we consider a definition of "seen" which requires an object to be gazed upon for a set length of time, or frames, before it can be considered as seen by the driver. This is done by examining consecutive frames to find those where the driver’s gaze remains uninterrupted within a bounding box of a given tracked object over a series of frames. Reliance on multiple frames allows enough time for a driver to process the object gazed upon. We analyze driver gaze on traffic-related objects identified in frames from actual driving sequences. We then consider the impact of different lengths of frame sequences and the size of bounding box overlap across frames on which objects can be taken as "seen" by the driver. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The economic burden of lameness in dairy cattle is a significant challenge facing the worldwide dairy industry. Studies suggest that it can cost the industry billions of dollars annually, with the exact cost varying by region. In the United States, the cost of lameness is estimated to be approximately $2 billion per year, while in the United Kingdom, it is around £200 million per year. These costs include lost milk production, decreased fertility, and treatment expenses. The impact of lameness on dairy cattle is far-reaching, posing a significant economic burden on farmers and countries and affecting animal welfare, milk production, and farm profitability. It is particularly concerning for small and marginal farmers, who are vulnerable to economic and financial sustainability concerns. Early detection and prevention of lameness are crucial to reducing these costs and improving the overall health and productivity of dairy herds. Prevalence rates vary globally, ranging from 17% to 35% in dairy herds, underscoring the urgent need for innovative solutions. Our proposed paper offers a novel approach to addressing this challenge. By combining activity data captured by Cow Necklace IoT Sensor and image analysis with Computer Vision, alongside expert veterinarian input, we provide a comprehensive and data-driven solution for early lameness detection in dairy cattle. This approach has the potential to significantly improve animal welfare, farm management practices, and overall herd productivity, leading to substantial economic benefits for farmers and the agricultural sector as a whole. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Tortuosity is an intrinsic property of 3D curves, related to their meanders, turns, and twists. In this work, we present a measure of tortuosity for 3D polygonal curves. These curves are composed of straight-line segments of different lengths. The proposed measure of tortuosity is computed from the slope change (scaled to lie between 0 and 1) and torsion (scaled to lie between 0 and 0.5) at each vertex of the polygonal curve. This descriptor is invariant under translation, rotation, symmetry, starting point, and scaling (change of size). Additionally, a normalized measure of tortuosity that ranges from 0 to 1 is introduced, allowing the comparison of curves with varying numbers of vertices. These properties of the tortuosity make it useful for shape comparison, description, and classification, potentially contributing to the analysis of 3D tubular structures in nature such as veins, optic nerves, proteins, and DNA chains. As examples of applications, we show how it can be used to quantitatively analyze and rank closed curves. Finally, we show that 3D tortuosity is a key feature in identifying 3D flagellar beat patterns of human sperm that correlate with the cell’s fertility, making it an important feature to include in clinical and scientific software. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Facial re-enactment from videos and images is one of the essential tasks in character animation applied in the creation of video games and movies. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for 3D facial re-enactment for online facial expression transferring. By approximating the pose, the approximation of expression parameters is reduced to a linear regression problem of which the closed-form solution is readily available, resulting in the improvement in inference speed. We also test the proposed method with multiple variants of initial blendshapes estimation and compare the results with the prior in term of both quality and speed. © 2020 IEEE.

Most camera calibration approaches require the use of calibration patterns like checkerboards. This also applies to Omnidirectional Catadioptric Systems. In this paper, we propose a new calibration method for Non-Central Conical Catadioptric Systems which only requires long and parallel lines which are plentiful in man-made environments. It is based on the extraction of lines from a single omnidirectional image, where we impose parallelism restrictions to obtain the analytical solution of the calibration parameters. However, the calibration of this kind of non-central catadioptric systems is noise sensitive. The proposal has been tested with simulations and then with synthetic and real images to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Document images are now widely captured by handheld devices such as mobile phones. The OCR performance on these images are largely affected due to geometric distortion of the document paper, diverse camera positions and complex backgrounds. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective approach to rectify distorted document image by estimating control points and reference points. After that, we use interpolation method between control points and reference points to convert sparse mappings to backward mapping, and remap the original distorted document image to the rectified image. Furthermore, control points are controllable to facilitate interaction or subsequent adjustment. We can flexibly select post-processing methods and the number of vertices according to different application scenarios. Experiments show that our approach can rectify document images with various distortion types, and yield state-of-the-art performance on real-world dataset. This paper also provides a training dataset based on control points for document dewarping. Both the code and the dataset are released at https://***/gwxie/Document-Dewarping-with-Control-Points.

Automatic facial expression recognition (FER) has gained enormous interest among the computer vision researchers in recent years because of its potential deployment in many industrial, consumer, automobile, and societal applications. There are a number of techniques available in the literature for FER;among them, many appearance-based methods such as local binary pattern (LBP), local directional pattern (LDP), local ternary pattern (LTP), gradient local ternary pattern (GLTP), and improved local ternary pattern (IGLTP) have been shown to be very efficient and accurate. In this paper, we propose a new descriptor called local neighborhood difference binary pattern (LNDBP). This new descriptor is motivated by the recent success of local neighborhood difference pattern (LNDP) which has been proven to be very effective in image retrieval. The basic characteristic of LNDP as compared with the traditional LBP is that it generates binary patterns based on a mutual relationship of all neighboring pixels. Therefore, in order to use the benefit of both LNDP and LBP, we have proposed LNDBP descriptor. Moreover, since the extracted LNDBP features are of higher dimension, therefore a dimensionality reduction technique has been used to reduce the dimension of the LNDBP features. The reduced features are then classified using the kernel extreme learning machine (K-ELM) classifier. In order to, validate the performance of the proposed method, experiments have been conducted on two different FER datasets. The performance has been observed using well-known evaluation measures, such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The proposed method has been compared with some of the state-of-the-art works available in the literature and found to be very effective and accurate.

In view of the fact that the accuracy of texture image classification is easily affected by changes in illumination and rotation, based on the analysis of geometric curvatures information of the image microscopic geometric surface and the completed local binary pattern (CLBP), this paper proposed a new descriptor, named as Geometry-based Completed Local Binary pattern (GCLBP). Inspired by the continuous rotation invariance and illumination robustness of the geometric curvature information, principal curvatures (PCs) of all pixels are first calculated and then used to represent the gradient magnitude information of the image, which are further exploited to replace the original gradient magnitude information in CLBP. To further improve the accuracy of texture classification, a cross-scale joint coding strategy is exploited to form the final GCLBP. The experimental results on two standard texture databases demonstrate that the GCLBP algorithm proposed in this paper is not only far superior to the original CLBP in terms of classification recognition accuracy and dimensionality of feature vector, but also better than most existing advanced texture classification methods.
