The paper examines the research methodology and technology used at Milan Malpensa international Airport (Varese, Italy) throughout the construction of the public transportation railway link between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, during which excavation works revealed a necropolis of the Final Bronze Age. The project was carried out through the recording and presentation of the 3d data of the necropolis and the exhibition of the archaeological finds brought to light during the excavations. This research examines the use and potentials of modern digital 3d modelling techniques applied at archaeological heritage to increase research, study and presentation of the archaeological heritage.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how the participatory and crowdsourcing project #iziTRAVELSicilia can be a significant tool in the dissemination of 3d models on cultural heritage. This project has been recognized as a best practice in the co-creation of cultural value, both in regional digital marketing and digital promotion and valorization through digital storytelling and crowdsourcing the interpretation of cultural heritage. Since its inception, thousands of people produced over 180 audio guides for cultural heritage sites. In this paper we briefly present the project and the case of the Archeological Museum 'Paolo Orsi' in Siracusa (Italy), as better practice in dissemination of digitized cultural heritage through platforms such as Google Street View and ***, which can be used to disseminate 3d models such as those made by USF IdEx for the 'Paolo Orsi' Museum.

We conducted an experiment about "Kansei", which is sensibility of each person. Our goal was to extract an artist's style in the oil painting. A style is determined by color, skill and other key elements. Our methods paid particular attention to the characteristics of touch, one of the skills. Texture of the oil painting is very different from watercolor painting because paints harden, and it becomes a ruggedness that can easily be seen by the human eye. We supposed that a touch could be determined with in the local mean curvature and the Gaussian curvature extracted from the range image of the oil painting. In this paper we proposed a style discrimination method using these curvatures, and reported on the experimental result.

The Murate Project aims to virtually rebuild a Florentine building, the Murate Convent which no longer exists. Particularly the study focused on the virtual reconstruction of the refectory, with the aim to recreate its original appearance and to find the location of one of Vasari's masterpieces. This work was carried out by a multidisciplinary team, which includes researchers from VAST-LAB of PIN and from PRISMA, a spin-off of the University, conservators of the Opificio delle Pietre dure of Florence and the University of Florence.

This paper shows how range-flow can help to estimate the elastic constants of complete objects. In our framework, the object is deformed actively by a robotic device pushing into the object. The robot senses the contact force and surface displacement at the point of contact. This contact object behavior alone is not sufficient to estimate elastic constants. The displacement of the object's non-contacted surface needs to be taken into account. This paper presents a method to estimate surface displacement from range;flow calculated with trinocular stereo imagery. The observed object behavior allows us to estimate the linear elastic material constants of the object. To this end we will introduce the boundary element method as a modeling tool for deformable objects in 3d imaging. The boundary element method is a full discrete continuum mechanics model.

Within a project whose objective is to develop a small-size 3d sensor combining a video camera with a 3d laser-based "camera" this paper describes the current status of the laser camera. The prototype of the laser camera is operational and is able to produce 3d "images'' with good definition at high speed. Because of size constraints, some of the control electronics are implemented in an FPGA. The video camera that will be included in the system also needs integrated data processing. Consequently, the paper also describes an ongoing research about how to optimize the implementation in an FPGA of an algorithm class which is relevant both for control electronics and video data processing.

In this paper;we present our dual-Beam Structured-Light Scanner (dSLS), a scanning system that generates range maps much richer than those obtained from a conventional structured-light scanning system. Range maps produced by dSLS require fewer registrations for 3-d modeling. We show that the dSLS system more easily satisfies what are often difficult-to-satisfy conditions for determining the 3-d coordinates of an arbitrary object point. Two specific advantages of dSLS over conventional structured-light scanning are: 1) A single scan by the dSLS system is capable of generating range data on more surfaces than possible with the conventional approach using the same number of camera images. And 2) since the data collected by dSLS is more free of self-occlusions, the object needs be examined from a smaller number of viewpoints.

Subdivision schemes are commonly used to obtain dense or smooth data representations from sparse discrete data. E. g., B-splines are smooth curves or surfaces that can be constructed by infinite subdivision of a polyline or polygon mesh of control points. New vertices are computed by linear combinations of the initial control points. We present a new non-linear subdivision scheme for the refinement of triangle meshes that generates smooth surfaces with minimum curvature variations. It is based on a combination of edge splitting operations and interpolation by blending circular arcs. In contrast to most conventional methods, the final mesh density may be locally adapted to the structure of the mesh. As an application we demonstrate how this subdivision scheme can be used to reconstruct missing range data of incompletely digitized 3-d objects.

Registration of range images requires the identification of common portions of surfaces between which a distance minimization is performed. This paper proposes a framework for the use of dense attributes of range image elements as a matching constraint in the registration. These attributes are chosen to be invariant to rigid transformations, so that their value is similar in different views of the same surface portion. Attributes can be derived from the geometry information in the range image, such as surface curvature, or be obtained from associated intensity measurements. The method is based on the Iterative Closest Compatible Point algorithm augmented with a random sampling scheme that uses the distribution of attributes as a guide for point selection. distance minimization is performed only between pairs of points considered compatible on the basis of their attributes. The performance of the method is illustrated on a rotationally symmetric object with color patterns.

The technique of 3-dimensional (3d) reconstruction from two orthogonal images is mainly used in ventricle or vessel reconstruction. In the literature, the 3d object is considered to be a stacked 2-dimensional(2d) slice set and 3d reconstruction can be achieved by constructing a stack of 2d slice reconstructions, by rendering each slice into two 1-dimensional profiles corresponding to a pair of rows obtained from the segmented projections. Previous work has modelled each slice as a 2d Markov-Gibbs random field, and a simulated annealing approach is used to solve the 2d reconstruction problem based on two infinite-source orthogonal views. The current work applies this approach to 3d space in particular. We find this approach can be applied to more wide application, rather than only in cardiac reconstruction. The results obtained by reconstructing binary and multiple objects of the human voxel phantom from two orthogonal projections, yield low reconstruction errors and the shapes of the reconstructed objects are observed to march the original objects to a high degree.
