Robotic tasks are commonly solved by integrating numerous different software and hardware modules into one working application. The necessary integration work typically contributes a considerable share of the total work required for a project, which is why past research on robotics computing has pushed towards generating higher-level abstraction layers, like middlewares. However, the current state-of-the-art cannot provide reliable, low-latency communication performance as we will show in the experimental evaluation. In this paper we propose the Open Robot communication framework (ORC). Compared to previous middlewares, ORC is lightweight and geared towards applications with high-performance requirements. We consider ORC especially useful for applications with Human Robot Interaction or collaborative tasks involving multiple robots. In the paper, we compare the runtime performance of ORC to the robot operating system (ROS). We can show that ORC enables message transfer with delays far below one millisecond and we demonstrate the real-time capabilities of ORC in a force-control task implemented in Python.

At the same time, new patterns of collaboration between knowledge workers arise: people want to communicate in-time, share resources, keep track of their issues and yet do not want to be unnecessarily disturbed in their concentration. We analyse several systems and approaches to support team-collaboration and finally introduce our understanding of "instant collaboration". In our research we support first patterns with a middleware and client-side prototype. The system is built upon proven systems for (instant) messaging, communication and repositories, and suggest a system that allows support for new work-patterns, yet integrates seamlessly into existing IT and workgroup infrastructure and company policies.

Moreover, after exploring the research landscape in DA we identified the need for a framework that permits to compose several elements of a softwaresystem and specially the ones that perform adaptation. Finally, we identified the need for a framework that allows for runtime discovery or replacement of services with a runtime environment capable of verifying the reliability of changes and preservation of the execution time bounds of the softwaresystem. In recent years, various small sensor nodes have been devel- oped for recognizing real world situations and events for the development of context-aware systems. We consider that the acceleration sensor is one crucial element for recogniz- ing various types of situations because it has rich and simple information. An application system using acceleration data requires the following features: 1) rapid processing of data without large memory since the amount of acceleration data is much greater than the amount of other sensor data, 2) a node that reduces the amount of data sent to a server, and 3) systems that can be easily configured by users at low cost. Current sensor nodes, however, do not have enough func- tions to satisfy these requirements. We propose a rule-based data processing engine for processing acceleration data. Our proposed engine rewrites the rules on each node with a few bytes of data. We evaluated our rule-based engine on our small sensor node called the Motion sensing and Communi- cation Minimized Chip (MoCoMi-Chip). Copyright 2008 ACM.

Ubiquitous environments both require strong and yet flexible protection, due to their highly dynamic character, and to the diversity of their security requirements. Autonomic security provides an elegant solution to the problem by applying the idea of flexibility to the security space itself, and automating reconfiguration of the protection mechanisms. The result is a self-protected system, running (almost) without any user intervention. In this paper, we show how the component-based software paradigm can help to realize such systems. We give an overview of the main issues involved in the design and the implementation. To strike the best balance between autonomic behavior and protection, many different mechanisms are needed. We propose an integrated solution for self-protected pervasive systems in terms of a 3-level architecture containing two control loops at the network and node levels. We present some preliminary results concerning an end-to-end framework based on this architecture, and its corresponding implementation. Copyright 2008 ACM.
