In order to study the mechanical properties of slag micropowder cured red layer filler and its microscopic action mechanism, the mechanical properties of red layer filler with different dosages of slag micropowder were investigated by using test methods such as no lateral limit and straight shear, and the microscopic properties and improvement mechanism of slag micropowder cured red layer filler were analysed by using test methods such as X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, laser particle size, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results show that the addition of slag powder can significantly improve the mechanical strength and water stability of the red-layer filler. The microscopic experiments such as X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy proved that the action mechanism of slag micropowder-modified red layer filler is ion exchange and hydration. More importantly, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it can be visually observed that the improved red layer filler causes the soil particles to flocculate into sheets or clumps with the increase of hydration gel materials, forming lamellar accumulation or flocculation structures, and the structural integrity is significantly improved.
