Coal ash, a fine, rounded and pozzolanic aggregate, is a waste product of coal combustion from steam power plant. The ash is an inorganic material undergoing mineral changes from the combustion process. It is a type of fly ash material with fine grain size and greyish color. The utilization of coal ash as a filler is expected to improve the quality of asphalt concrete mixture. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of asphalt-concrete mixture using coal ash in dense-graded and gap-graded gradations. These gradations were used due to their higher amount of filler and fine particles than uniform and open-graded gradations. The study results revealed that the performance of the mixture using coal ash filler met the specifications of asphalt concrete mixture. In addition, this result indicated that the mixture would be able to withstand heavy traffic loads. Thus, the utilization of coal ash was recommended as a filler in asphalt-concrete mixtures. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The signal-processing and intelligent diagnostic and monitoring methods for rotating machines usually depend on preset parameters. Moreover, many of these methods have difficulty in achieving ideal health monitoring effect and fault prediction results with strong noise interference. To overcome these limitations, a novel digital twin architecture called the Ramanujan digital twin (rdT) is composed. This architecture uses the Ramanujan periodic transform (RPT) as its computational core to detect the potential fault signatures in each monitoring frame. The phenomenal faulty simulation model with high fidelity to the real-time potential fault features of the rotating machines is constructed to avoid drawbacks of the physics-based simulation, such as the complicated modeling process and the high-computation consumption. This simulation signal will function as the virtual entity of the rdT, providing guidance information, with which the proposed method will no longer depend on the preset parameters. Most non-stochastic architected materials proposed to date have been based on periodic structures with a homogeneous topology and uniform materiality. Topologically and materially heterogeneous mechanical metamaterials promise novel capabilities, expanding the design space through growth in degrees of freedom. However, this leads to increased design complexity, as the space of possible solutions becomes a high-dimensional domain. We present a computational design automation framework for novel heterogeneous mechanical meta-material designs with a CMA-ES black-box evolutionary algorithm at its core, and demonstrate its application through a case study on new 2D pentamode meta-materials. Pentamodes are defined by extreme values of the bulk-to-shear modulus ratio (B/G) and are of particular interest due to both their unusual properties, being very stiff under compression yet easy to deform in shear, and potential as building blocks for the realization of any physically possible and desired elastic property. For the pentamode case study, this approach resulted in irregular composite structures with large B/G ratios, many structures having values between 1-3 x 10(4), a range well above previously reported experimental values of 10(3). The new meta-material systems it generated do not present the point-like connections of the classic pentamode diamond-type lattice, which is a key practical limitation for application. This work shows that population-based metaheuristic computational methods can reliably generate novel mechanical metamaterial designs capable of achieving more extreme performance than more traditional metamaterial design approaches.

L.P.G, a fuel popular for domestic application, is cleaner among several conventional fuels. The LPG industry is around 36 years of age and is principally amassed in the limited scale area. It is an outstanding fuel source because of its origin, advantages and applications. The use of LPG cooking stove is increasing day-by-day, but still there is scope to investigate for the improvement of thermal efficiency, better combustion and energy saving. Some researchers worked on design of gas burner, and many worked on the advanced methods of improving thermal efficiency. In porous radiant burners, studied at different heat input (5–10 kW), that increases 30–40% efficiency, increase CO in the range 350–1145 PPM and NO_x in the range 40–104 PPM, with maximum efficiency of 50%. On the other hand, design developed in two layers of porous radiant burner using B15-4246:2002, in the power range of 1–3 kW, showed an efficiency of 75.1% with CO and NO_x in the range 30–140 PPM and 0.2–36 PPM respectively, and conventional burner that exhibit 33.6–58% efficiency CFD and improved energy saving burner (EB) were also used to compute accurate results. The loading height, primary aeration, heat input, effect of number of holes and angle of both inner and outer rings of burner were also studied and the authors reported improved efficiency of the burners by using porous material technology in conventional LPG burner. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This paper presents the computational study of air bubble evolution and disengagement in water from a single nozzle (1mmdiameter) underwater with an airflow rate of 2 mL/min using the VOF method with the LS method coupled. We have investigated the bubble evolution at different contact angles (50∘≤ θ0≤ 110∘ at solid–liquid–gas interface. We examined the variation of bubble volume (V) at different contact angle and size of the bubble at the base (D) and we investigate the stages of growth of bubble termed as (1) nucleation period, (2) under critical growth, (3) critical growth, and (4) necking, during bubble rising or evolution. I saw in my study that the bubble volume depends on the wetting condition and bubble volume increases drastically as contact angle varied θ0, changes from 50∘ to 110∘. Bubble evolution is beginning to be regulated by the hysteresis of contact angle. During the expansion stage and elongation stage of the bubble, bubble shape oscillates which was observed in my simulation. In the initial rise of bubble surface tension, capillary force is dominated and variation of viscous drag force is neglected. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Stingless Bees Pot-Pollen (SBPP), a mixture of pollen, nectar and bee enzyme made by stingless bees has high moisture content, making it susceptible to microbes and fungi growth. This can cause spoilage and become toxic to be. Thus, SBPP require suitable preservation method for storage. Current methods available such as sun drying, and oven drying can be unhygienic, inefficient, and hard to control the temperature which leads to nutrient loss. Hence, a swirling fluidized bed dryer (SFBD), a modified fluidised bed dryer with swirling airflow is proposed as it has rapid drying performance at relatively low temperature. Currently, drying models for various materials in a fluidised bed dryer has been previously studied. However, research on drying model of SBPP using a SFBD is still lacking. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to determine the most suitable drying model for drying of SBPP in a SFBD. A lab scale SFBD with a 67° swirling distributor is used to dry 25 g of SBPP at superficial air velocities of 4, 5, and 6 m/s. In this study, 7 drying models obtained from literatures are compared to determine the most suitable model for drying of SBPP in SFBD. It was found that, the Midilli-Kucuk model was the most suitable drying model compared to other drying models tested with highest average R2 (0.999307), lowest X2 (7.2 × 10-5), and lowest RMSE (2.16 × 10-2). The Midilli-Kucuk model closely predict the experimental values for all superficial air velocities tested. The experimental results also shown that increasing the superficial air velocities will lead to increase in drying rate. Thus, it can be concluded that Midilli-Kucuk model is suitable to describe the drying of stingless bee pot-pollen in SFBD. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Existing multi-object tracking methods encounter significant challenges when dealing with occluded objects. To address the issue of ID switching caused by occlusions, these methods often heavily rely on motion prediction, which can lead to cumulative errors. Additionally, they typically utilize re-identification (reID) networks to extract appearance features for association, but this heavy reliance on training data and computational power is a major limitation. This study presents a fast multi-object tracking method that is robust to occlusions, which employs BEV bounding boxes estimated using geometric constraints. We introduce a novel algorithm that leverages homography transformation and geometric priors to quickly estimate target 3D bounding boxes through optimization. Furthermore, we enhance ByteTrack by integrating the reprojection of 3D bounding boxes into the association process, effectively mitigating the influence of occlusions on MOT. Moreover, this study reduces the frequency of using computationally expensive object detection by employing sparse optical flow for fast tracking. The experimental findings indicate that our method attains enhanced accuracy and faster execution times compared to existing multi-object tracking methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

At Legnaro National Laboratories of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics, Design for Assembly principles were applied to ease and improve the assembly procedure of the Forced Electron Beam Induced Arc Discharge ion source for the SPES Isotope Separation On-Line facility. Such device is a key component for the whole system, as its correct functioning is fundamental to provide the radioactive ion beam to the experimental users;furthermore, its reliability and performance stability are directly affected by the construction and placement accuracy of the parts that compose the assembly. A deep critical analysis of the current assembly procedure was performed to identify the main issues that affect the mounting accuracy of the ion source components. Consequently, a new assembly procedure was developed to fix the identified issues without applying relevant modification to the ion source parts;specifically, a custom assembly tool was designed not only for an easier coupling of the components, but also to improve the accuracy of the functional surfaces positioning to increase the device performance stability during operation. To achieve this, a custom assembly tool was designed to reduce the number of the elements of the tolerance stackup and, therefore, the uncertainty propagation. The proposed assembly procedure results significatively less time consuming than the current one, moreover it improves the accuracy of the FEBIAD ion source components position once assembled, as confirmed by Coordinate Measuring Machine measures. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
