It is known that surface texturing provides enhanced mechanical and thermal behavior in the application of journal/thrust bearings and seals. This work presents an examination of parallel sector-pad thrust bearings consisting of twelve pads with textured surfaces in terms of load carrying capacity, friction torque and thermal performance. In this respect, the influence of different texturing patterns on the thrust bearing performance are presented and studied through 3D computational fluid dynamics ( CFD) simulations based on the governing equations of incompressible lubricant, and these simulations are conducted in ANSYS-CFX. The previous studies commonly find optimum pattern geometry by keeping each pattern geometry the same such as only square and only elliptical. Unlike existing research studies, the use of varying dimple patterns which are the combinations of commonly used dimple geometries such as circular- elliptical, circular-square, and elliptical-square is investigated to demonstrate the performance of textured pads with varying pattern geometries. The simulation results are verified through experimental data provided in the literature. The CFD simulation results of varying patterned pads are compared with existing ones that are single patterned optimal designs. This study carries out optimal selection of varying dimple patterns that provides an insight for further optimization efforts on surface textured bearing and seals.

There are various ways of enhancing the thermal efficiency of an LPG gas stove like variation of gas pressure, varying loading weight or loading height. This paper deals with the improvement of the thermal efficiency of LPG gas stoves by varying the loading height. Loading height is defined as the distance between the burner top and the bottom surface of the vessel when the vessel is kept on the stove. The experiment was performed as prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS). It was found that with an increase in the loading height there was an increase in thermal efficiency up to the optimum loading height of 17.5 mm at which maximum thermal efficiency was achieved. Further increase in the loading height resulted in a decrease in the thermal efficiency. A mathematical analysis was carried, and a correlation is developed which is compared with the experimental results. The maximum efficiency achieved was comparable to the value predicted from correlation. The Industry 5.0 paradigm emphasizes the importance of the operator’s well-being by seeing human-centricity as one of its cardinal principles. This enables a twofold benefit, improving the sustainability of the production process and enhancing performance. Improving performance and increasing operators’ safety is often related to cognitive load optimization. Confined spaces are working environments where elements of distraction, such as noise, can cause accidents with major, even fatal, consequences. Studies on the effects of noise on cognitive abilities present mixed results, and those concerning confined spaces are limited as they require an expensive experimental setup replicating the working scenario. Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) technology enables overcoming this gap by replicating the experimental conditions in a synthetic environment. We exploited IVR to study noise’s impact on cognitive performance in confined spaces. We compared the impact of a stationary continuous noise source with an intermittent non-periodic one by administering the Stroop Color and Word Test. We also assessed the perceived cognitive effort by administering the modified noise-induced task load index questionnaire. We also compared the effects on the operator’s physiological activity through Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analysis. Results show that by keeping the equivalent noise level lower than 85 dB, noise has no statistically significant effects on cognitive performance and Heart Rate. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The usage of solid polymer electrolytes is gaining popularity because of their safe and good performance in various batteries, especially in lithium-ion batteries. However, all these electrolytes have some limitations such as lower ionic conductivity at room temperature and deprived mechanical properties. In the present research, the electrolytes are prepared with PVDF, PEO and LATP blends to address all the mentioned issues. During the preparation of electrolytes, the contents of PEO are varied from 5 to 20% with PVDF. To improve the electrochemical properties of electrolyte, 10% (to the weight of PVDF and PEO mixture) of LATP is added to the electrolyte. The effect of variation in the proportion of PVDF and PEO contents on the electrical and mechanical properties of electrolytes is analysed in the present research. The addition of PEO in the electrolyte improves the ionic conductivity of the solid electrolyte. However, the yield strength of the electrolyte is decreased with an increase in PEO proportion. Collaborative robots (cobots) are progressively becoming essential in industrial settings, where they operate in conjunction with human workers to execute intricate tasks. Optimising the operational efficiency of cobots entails various obstacles stemming from conflicting aims, including the minimisation of task completion time, reduction of energy consumption, and assurance of safety. This work presents a hybrid optimisation method that integrates the advantages of the Tabu Search algorithm and the Bat Algorithm to tackle these multi-objective difficulties. The Tabu Search is proficient in local search optimisation but frequently becomes ensnared in local optima, whereas the Bat Algorithm, derived from bat echolocation, excels in global search yet may exhibit deficiencies in precision during fine-tuning. The suggested algorithm improves global exploration and local exploitation by hybridising these two strategies, hence ensuring effective job allocation, trajectory planning, and resource management in dynamic collaborative robot environments. The hybrid algorithm is utilised to optimise various objectives inside a simulated collaborative robot environment. experimental findings indicate substantial enhancements in cobot performance, especially for the equilibrium of work efficiency, safety, and energy consumption, relative to conventional optimisation techniques. This research emphasises the efficacy of integrating bio-inspired algorithms with traditional optimisation methods to address intricate multi-objective challenges in industrial contexts. © 2024 The Authors.

The vibration signal of rolling bearing under time-varying speed has strong non-stationarity and the fault characteristic frequency changes with time, so it is necessary to use order analysis for fault the feature extraction. Time-frequency analysis (TFA) methods used in tacholess order tracking are weak in energy concentration and have heavy computational complexity. To solve these problems, an adaptive fast Chirplet transform (CT) based an automatic optimal searching angle band is proposed in this paper. Using the modulation operator in synchrosqueezed transform, the proposed method can adaptively optimize the searching band of the frequency modulation parameters for speeding up the TFA, which overcomes the problem of low computational efficiency in CT and its variants. The comparative analysis of simulation shows that the proposed method has good time-frequency concentration, and its calculation speed is much faster than the traditional TFA methods. The experimental results of the signal from a rolling bearing under time-varying speed present the comprehensive advantages of the proposed method in ridge extraction accuracy and computational efficiency. Consequently, the proposed method can be applied to accurately extract the fault features of rolling bearing under time-varying speed. © 2022 IEEE.

In the present paper, we have developed a two-warehouse production inventory model and demand is taken into account as the function of price and time. For a short-known period, at the beginning of the cycle, demand is affected by stock on display. Deterioration rate depends on time;shortages are allowed and partially backlogged. In real-life situation, rented warehouse is always costly as compared to own warehouse, but on the other hand, they provide better facilities as compared to own warehouse because of that deterioration rate of rented warehouse is lower than the own warehouse. The aim of the model is to show the utility in real life. The detection methods of yellow dragon disease spread via wood lice transmission networks like social networks are very important for diverse citrus trees and farmers. Although current methods have some detection accuracy or low cost, the detection processes are relatively troublesome and the detection cycles are long, making it be a difficult problem to apply them in large-scale orange farms as practical scenarios to detect citrus yellow dragon disease in a timely manner. A new method toward detecting citrus yellow dragon disease spread utilizing Spark and deep learning is proposed for this problem. By obtaining citrus field video stream data through high-definition cameras, and transferring the stream data to the Spark cluster through Kafka like intelligent agents, it is practicable to use the structured streaming component under the Spark framework via big data ecosphere to process video or image stream data transmitted via monitoring. We construct a citrus yellow dragon disease detection model via YOLOv7, and use self-made citrus yellow dragon disease images as training and testing data sets. The preliminary experimental results show that the new methods achieved an accuracy of 83.14%. To reduce the occurrence of missed and false detections, the shallow detection heads are added to the feature fusion networks for improvement, extracting and fusing shallow network information to try to improve the detection effects of yellow dragon disease. Then replace the convolution operation in the ELAN (Effective Long-range Aggregation Network) module with deep separable convolution to reduce the number of model parameters. The preliminary experimental results show that compared to the original YOLOv7 model, our improved citrus yellow dragon disease detection model with YOLOv7 has an accuracy improvement of 2.43%, maintaining a higher detection accuracy with lower time than before. © 2024 SPIE.

Functionally graded materials are tailor-made materials. In the present work, the theoretical study of Al–Cu functionally graded material through gradation laws is investigated. The properties like density, Young’s modulus, shear modulus, specific heat and thermal conductivity are taken into consideration. The gradation laws such as power law, exponential law and sigmoid law gradation laws are applied to evaluate the behavior of these parameters at varying index numbers from one to three. It has been concluded that increasing the value of power law index (n), variation in all the effective material properties (mechanical and physical) of Al–Cu FGM, changing from linear into a polynomial way. Al (material at the bottom surface) properties are becoming more predominant up-to a larger range of z/h ratio with increasing value of power law index (n). At the value of n = 1, power law and Sigmoid law both are predicting the same results which are simply the rule of mixture. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Electric vehicles are now a trend. Various types of electric vehicles have been produced. The development of electric vehicle propulsion motors is also continuously carried out to get the best performance. One type of electric motor that has a high efficiency is a brushless permanent magnet axial flux motor. This type of motor has a relatively large torque at low speeds. Therefore, this paper presents the results of testing the micro electric car propulsion system using a brushless permanent magnet axial flux motor with a modular system. Tests are carried out to obtain the value of torque, electric power, mechanical power, speed, and temperature rise of the motor. The driving motor is mounted on the rear axle of the micro electric car, then tested using a chassis dynamometer with disk brake loading. It tests with maximum torque of 37.8 Nm, at 550 rpm, with an electric power input of 1197 Watts. The highest efficiency is 76% obtained at 83rpm with 37,8Nm Torque. From the test results, the total efficiency of the drive system is considered low, it was due to mechanical losses on transmission and gear of the axle. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
