Currently, the development of spark ignition engine technology leads to energy-efficient and low-emission vehicle policies, which is indicated by programs, such as the Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) program, Electric Vehicle (EV), Hybrid Vehicle (HV), and vehicles with alternative fuels. The direction of these policies is due to the declining availability of fossil energy and the issue of global climate change. Furthermore, various efforts have been taken to resolve this problem. To realize energy-efficient vehicles, the development of spark ignition engine currently leads to the achievement of AFR stoichiometry (14.67). This allows the vehicle to operate with optimal power and good fuel economy. However, further improvement can be made by carefully analyzing the power requirements and fuel control. Therefore, this study offers a new method to improve fuel economy based on driver behavior aspects, which was applied by integrating steering operations (the driver’s behavior while operating the steering) and fuel control. The steering operation was designed with 3 clusters, namely the low, medium, and high. Similarly, vehicle speed was designed with 3 clusters, namely low, medium, and high., The fuel mode was designed based on the input steering operation, vehicle speed, and fuzzy logic. The simulation results were in the form of fuel modes, such as economizer and stoichiometry. The economizer regulates the AFR fuel in the lean mixture (15.4), while the stoichiometry adjusts the AFR at the ideal mixture (14.67), respectively. Therefore, the fuel economy was realized when the steering operation and vehicle speed were both in the low cluster. Based on the simulation, it was concluded that the technology application designed, has a very high potential of being applied in real vehicles to assist in realizing energy-efficient vehicles. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This study proposes a new modified ACI 318-08 formula based on machine learning (ML) to forecast better the compressive strength of Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFST) columns. The prediction ML model is established from 663 experimental samples. CFST columns’ ultimate compressive strength results show differences when comparing experiments with the current calculation formulas using the Linear Regression algorithm to modify the original ACI 318-08 formula by determining the regression coefficient or slope coefficient and the required intercept value. The prediction model with the updated ACI 318-08 formula yields a more reliable CFST column ultimate compressive strength. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This work-in-progress paper introduces an innovative approach that uses computational notebooks to teach Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in a mechanical engineering undergraduate course to aid the understanding of complex phenomena in Mechanics of Materials, and enhance students' computational thinking skills. Research indicates that students, irrespective of their educational level, face difficulties in grasping fundamental concepts in mechanics of materials. These challenges arise from the inherent complexity of concepts like stress, strain, torsion, and buckling, which are difficult to observe, hindering comprehension. Therefore, this work aims to leverage the synergy between mechanics of materials and computational principles to actively engage students in advanced topics such as structural strength, failure of structures, and sensitivity analysis, through the use of computational notebooks. To evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, we first asked students to analyze truss structures using hand calculations following the discrete stiffness method within a Finite Element Analysis framework. Subsequently, we implemented the same method as a simulation tool in a MATLAB computational Notebook. Finally, we asked the students to reflect on: (1) the value of using computational methods to approach Finite Element Analysis when compared to hand calculations;(2) the difficulties they faced when implementing the activities in the MATLAB computational Notebook;(3) the support they required to successfully complete these activities;and (4) the effectiveness of the simulation tool in understanding the effect of forces and stress distributions in structures. We anticipate that computational notebooks will provide an ideal platform for sharing lessons and tutorials, enhancing student engagement, and promoting active learning. Learning label noise, one of the most challenging tasks in supervised machine learning, has become a hot research topic recently. The k nearest neighbors (kNN) classifiers are sensitive to label noise and are often used to detect and filter label noise. However, relying on a single parameter k and single prediction result of kNN classifier, current detecting methods are prone to incur over-cleaning problems, resulting in the under-fit of the classification models. In this paper, we propose an iterative recovery strategy-based kNN method (IRS-kNN) to edit the training set with label noise. IRS-kNN has three significant advantages. Firstly, instead of relying on a single parameter k, it leverages a finite set of neighbors to detect the candidate label noise to improve the stability of the detected label noise;Secondly, by cascaded recovering the labels of the training data set for further detection, more difficult-to-learn label noise can be detected, enhancing the precision of the detected label noise. Thirdly, the iterative detection results provide meaningful guidance to deal with the label noise in different measures, which contributes to recovering the distribution of the corrupted data set as if it was not noisy. experimental results on 8 UCI benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2022 IEEE.

Torsional Tuned Mass Dampers (TTMD) are used for attenuation of harmful effect of torque pulsation in internal combustion engines which originates due to reciprocating unbalance and gas forces. Torsional dampers use silicone oil inside a cylindrical cavity which houses an inertial ring. It is possible to use the theoretical models to estimate stiffness and damping properties of the TTMD, when the silicone oil is used in the damper. However when TTMD uses rheological fluid instead of plain silicone oil or any other additives are used in the silicone oil, it is difficult to estimate stiffness and damping with the theoretical methods. The present work demonstrates an experimental method to determine the vibration characteristics of TTMD. A custom designed fixture is used along with an accelerometer, time and frequency domain data analysis and arrangement to provide forced vibrations. Initially TTMD is excited with free vibrations and frequency response of the angular acceleration is measured, which is used to determine stiffness of the TTMD. Further, a harmonic torque as applied and the steady state amplitude of angular acceleration is measured, which is used to calculate damping coefficient of TTMD. The presented method exhibits 5-10% deviation in the estimated vibration parameters in comparison to the theoretically calculated values. © 2022 IEEE.

In this work, the convective heat transfer coefficient (CHTC) of Giloy (Tinospora Cordifolia) has been determined using indoor forced convection hot air electric drying (IFCHAED). The experiment was carried out in September 2023 under the climatic conditions of Rohtak. In an experimental drier, the giloy was dried until it achieved the acceptable safe humidity preservation level of 8–10%. As a consequence, to figure out the parameters of the trial constants n or c in the Nusselt value formulation, CHTC was computed by doing a basic linear regression study on the experimental data. The average CHTC h c , value is 1.07 W/m 2 °C. The error in the experiment is calculated as a percentage of uncertainty which is having an average value of 10.5436 for the instruments.

Hybrid composites have had a more significant impact on the recent development of materials with a high strength-to-weight ratio in engineering applications. The primary objective of this research is to identify the various and unique properties a composite has when different reinforcement fibres are used in different fibres. Many natural fibre composites have good mechanical properties, but there are still application requirements and synthetic carbon-reinforced alternatives that aren't met. The mechanical properties of hybrid epoxy composites reinforced with various commonly used synthetic fibres, such as carbon Kevlar, have been evaluated. Epoxy Ly556 is a polymer resin that is used as a matrix. Fabrication hybrid composite s five layers with six different samples used vacuum bag molding technique. Numerical simulations of welding processes, although a quite complex modelling and calibration is required, can be a powerful tool to reduce both design time and costs ascribable to experimental tests. Indeed, numerical simulations allow prediction of distortions and residual stresses on welded joints related to the thermal process effects. This paper focuses on a numerical modelling and simulation of a multi-pass submerged arc welding process performed on a butt joint configuration of A516 steel plates with different thicknesses. The numerical analysis was performed by using the software package ESI SYSWELD. This software simulates welding processes by three different methods, depending on the objectives to be reached, i.e. the moving heat source, the macro-bead and the shrinkage methods. These methods differ mainly in the thermo-mechanical data of the material provided as inputs for the model definition and, consequently, for the considered physical phenomena. Herein, these three different approaches were implemented for the specific process configuration. The obtained results were compared providing a wide overview of the most suitable numerical strategies evaluating the distortions and the residual stresses induced in the investigated joined parts. In this paper, computational determination of heat transfer features of TiO and CuO2, mixed with aqua, as a base fluid for heat exchanger application, is conducted using ANSYS® Fluent software. The parameters like Nusselt number, heat transfer and skin friction coefficients are dealt with in detail. The computed results were then compared with the results of Al2O3/water mixture. The results revealed that with an increased flow rate, the value of Nusselt number, and consequently the rate of heat transfer, improves significantly by using TiO and CuO2 particles in aqua. However, the fluid’s inlet temperature has insignificant effect on the radiator performance. The TiO concentration in water showed highest rate of heat transfer compared to Al2O3 and CuO2. Furthermore, CuO2 exhibited highest skin friction coefficient when compared with Al2O3 and TiO. In addition, Al2O3 executed least Nusselt number and skin friction coefficient compared to CuO2. The rate of heat transfer gets enhanced by about 4–5 times by using TiO and CuO2 in place of Al2O3 under all operating conditions. On the other hand, the heat transfer characteristics of TiO and CuO2 do not vary much and are in close match with each other. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
