Discontinuous long fibre (DLF) thermoplastic composites present a promising lightweight alternative to metal replacement in high-volume applications, offering an ideal balance between mechanical properties and processability. This study examines the stress-transfer mechanism across discontinuities in aligned polyamide-6 (PA6) glass-fibre reinforced tapes through experimental and computational approaches. mechanical tensile tests and 2D digital image correlation (DIC) were employed to investigate stress-transfer in aligned tape model composites, revealing critical stress-transfer lengths and stress concentrations. Double-lap shear tests further supported the findings. A progressive damage finite element analysis (FEA) model was developed to simulate the mechanical properties and stress-transfer mechanism in these composites, accounting for variability in tape properties and microstructures. Results from both experimental and numerical methods aligned well, providing insights for property optimization through the introduction of intentional discontinuities. This research lays the groundwork for the development of a multi-fidelity intelligent optimization framework to enhance the mechanical properties of DLF-based composites. © 2023 international Committee on Composite Materials. This paper presents numerical simulations of incident oblique shock wave impinging on a flat plate with a turbulent boundary layer using a nonlinear anisotropic turbulence model. Three cases with different incident shock angles under the same free-stream Mach number are studied, including attachment flow, incipient separation flow and outstanding separation flows. Convection terms and diffusion terms are calculated using the third-order Roe's flux difference splitting scheme and the second-order central difference scheme in the code, respectively. The Runge-Kutta time marching method is employed to solve the governing equations for steady state solutions. Comparisons between the simulated results and experimental data are carried out, which include density contours, pressure distribution, skin friction coefficients distribution and streamline vectors. To capture the essential behavior of this complex anisotropic turbulence separation flow caused by the shock-wave-boundary-layer-interaction (SWBLI), an anisotropic eddy viscosity tensor and a nonlinear Reynolds stress-strain constitutive relationship are used in this model. The anisotropic eddy viscosity tensor is composed of turbulent fluctuation velocity vector and characteristic length vector which are obtained by statistical partial average scheme. With proper modeling of anisotropic eddy viscosity tensor, the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. It is worthy to point it out that the computation accuracy decreases with increasing interaction intensity. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In this work, we present a novel image fusion approach aimed at enhancing the quality of fused images generated from thermal (infrared - IR) and visible image pairs. We compare our proposed method with the conventional Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) approach, using a comprehensive set of image quality metrics, including Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Spatial Frequency (SF), and Human Visual System (HVS)-based metrics. Our experimental results unequivocally demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed fusion method. Notably, our approach excels in preserving and enhancing edge information, a vital aspect in various image fusion applications such as surveillance and medical imaging. The consistently higher PSNR values across all sample images reflect our method's exceptional edge enhancement capabilities. Its remarkable edge enhancement capabilities, computational efficiency, and adaptability position it as an efficient and versatile alternative to conventional DWT-based approaches and deep learning-based methods. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.. Solar photovoltaic panels have emerged as a potential alternative to conventional sources of power generation due to recent technological advancements and market competitiveness. However, their conversion efficiency is generally low, and it suffers considerably with continuous increment in module temperature during operation. Most commonly used crystalline silicon module provides a conversion efficiency of nearly 20% at standard operating conditions, i.e., at 25 °C. However, the actual conversion efficiency of such a module is less than 20% as the operating temperature is normally much higher than 25 °C in real conditions. High operating temperature results in low conversion efficiency, reduced electrical power output, and reduced life span of the module. Therefore, an efficient cooling system is required to maintain low module temperature by extracting heat away from the module. In current scenario, a popular method among researchers is to use phase change materials (PCMs) on back of PV modules to store excess heat. PCMs are suitable for PV module cooling as they are capable of storing substantial amount of thermal energy without using any external power. Industrial grade paraffins, capric acid, palmitic acid, lauric acid, and few salt hydrates have been used by researchers in various configurations. This research paper aims to review and summarize recent research works which utilize phase change materials in various design configurations to manage thermal behavior of PV modules in order to maximize their conversion efficiency. One of the most significant requirements in modern mechanical engineering and instrument-making productions is workpieces’ orientation systems productivity and their simulation speed. Workpieces’ orientation systems simulation, in particular their orientation movements, is one of the most challenging and essential pre-production tasks. The complexity of the mathematical model equations, its accuracy, and computational complexity affect simulation effectiveness. The article describes the mathematical model of the workpiece orienting movements, which relies upon the mathematical apparatus of quaternions. Moreover, the article shows the principal properties of quaternions and the rules for working with them. Theoretical and experimental studies of the workpiece orienting movements quaternion model are presented, particularly the sequence and results of determining the geometric parameters of these movements, i.e., rotation angle and direction of the vector, which is collinear to the workpiece’s axis of rotation. The model has been studied for an arbitrary workpiece. The results show that the performed works’ productivity and speed increased by approximately 40%. At the same time, computational costs and intellectual efforts are significantly reduced compared to the traditional methods of the workpiece’s movement description. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Wear of a material is one of the most undesirable processes experienced in practical applications. It results in energy loss, material degradation and life-shortening of machine components. This study aims to investigate the behavior of wear rate as a function of different operating parameters. The experiments were conducted on reciprocating tribometer, with three different tribopairs, of ball-on-disc configuration. The 52,100 chromium steel ball was allowed to slide with gun metal, mild-steel and EN-31 steel discs under different conditions. The wear rate for the specimens for each test was calculated by weight loss method. The effect of time, sliding distance and material hardness on the wear rate was examined there off. The Power Law and ANN models were developed for the estimation of wear rate. The model outputs were compared with the observed experimental results. The accuracy of the models was assessed using statistical parameters viz, coefficient of determination (R2), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and mean square error (MSE). It was observed that ANN model was more accurate compared to power law. Further, ANOVA analysis, with 5% p-value, was performed to enunciate the dominant factor affecting the wear rate. It was concluded that the load was the dominant factor influencing the wear rate and was succeeded by the velocity and hardness. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In order to improve the accuracy and convergence speed of power communication network security situation prediction, we introduced an optimization method called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. This study applied the PSO algorithm to predict the security situation of power communication networks and achieved significant results. Firstly, we adopted the PSO computing framework, which has the characteristics of memory computing and quasi real-Time processing, making it very suitable for the needs of big data processing in power communication. This framework can efficiently process large-scale data, enabling prediction algorithms to complete calculations in a relatively short time. Secondly, we propose a PSO optimization algorithm to correct the weights of the neural network. Through the iterative process of the PSO algorithm, we can find better weight combinations, thereby improving the learning efficiency and accuracy of the neural network. In order to further improve computational efficiency, we also propose a parallel PSO optimized neural network algorithm, which enables computation to be carried out simultaneously on multiple processing units, accelerating the entire prediction process. Finally, through experimental comparison, we conclude that the prediction method based on PSO optimization algorithm has higher accuracy. Compared with traditional Hadoop based prediction methods, there is also a significant improvement in processing speed. This means that we can quickly obtain accurate predictions of the security situation of the power communication network, providing better support for the management and decision-making of the power communication system. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. This study attempts to propose a design-for-reliability (DfR) methodology for solder joint reliability characterization of a developed 1700V/100A, 9.6 kW SiC power metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) module (termed the ITRI SiC power module) under power cycling, for on-board electric vehicle (EV) charging (OBC). This DfR methodology integrates a viscous computational fluid dynamics (CFD) thermal model and a thermal-mechanical finite element model (FEM). The calculated viscoplastic strain results using the proposed DfR methodology and the experimental lifetime data together with the characterized characteristic crack area are used to establish the physical failure mechanism and damage criteria-based (PFMDC) lifetime prediction model. The proposed DfR methodology is further tested on the developed ITRI SiC power module, and the validity of the proposed DfR methodology is demonstrated by comparing the predicted power cycling solder joint lifetime with the experimental results. Finally, parametric study is performed to evaluate the influence of the power cycling solder joint reliability of the ITRI SiC power module under actual application conditions. © 2024 Japan Institute of Electronics Packaging.

Art restoration plays a pivotal role in preserving and revitalising cultural heritage. However, conventional art restoration methods are often fraught with limitations, including the challenge of faithfully reproducing the original artwork's essence while addressing issues such as fading, staining, and physical damage. In this context, we present a pioneering approach in this paper that harnesses the potential of deep learning, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), coupled with Computer Vision techniques, to revolutionize the art restoration process. Our method begins by generating artificially induced deteriorated art images, creating a comprehensive dataset encompassing various forms of distortions and multiple levels of degradation. This dataset is the foundation for training a Distributed Denoising CNN (DDCNN), capable of effectively removing distortions while preserving the intricate details inherent to artworks. This integration of Computer Vision and CNN-based denoising enables the restoration of artworks with high accuracy, ensuring that the original artistic essence is faithfully preserved. One of the key strengths of our approach lies in its adaptability to different kinds of distortions at varying levels of degradation. Utilizing a versatile training dataset, our Distributed Denoising CNN can address a wide spectrum of distortion types, ranging from subtle colour variations to more severe structural damage. This adaptability empowers our method to cater to a diverse array of deteriorated artworks, including paintings, sketches and photographs. Through extensive experimentation on a diverse dataset, our results consistently demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed approach by comparing it against other De-noising CNN models. We showcase the substantial reduction of distortion in the art image, transforming deteriorated artworks into masterpieces. Huge quantities of waste materials are generated daily from different industries and manufacturing units. The increasing amount of wastes, and the disposal issues related to wastes, are the major concerns of researchers and environmentalists these days. Factors, like less availability of space for landfilling and huge costs involved in landfilling, are influencing researchers toward waste utilization. Researchers are focusing on the reutilization of wastes from different industries in the preparation of concrete. Different wastes comprise of waste rubber from dismantled tires, waste from plastics, marble dust, etc. The utilization of wastes in the preparation of concrete will make concrete production cost-efficient and will provide a solution for the disposal of various industrial wastes. This article reviews the utilization of different industrial byproducts/wastes in sustainable self-consolidating concrete (SCC) production. Various properties of self-consolidating concrete like workability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and durability characteristics were reviewed in this review article.
