Scene perception aims to build a semantic context for various tasks of visual processing, especially for object recognition. Binocular vision system is now widely equipped with mobile intelligent robots,however, monocular images are currently mostly used for scene perception task. One can obtain lower classification performance by using features extracted from monocular image as the complexity of natural scene. In this paper a binocular stereo vision based approach for scene perception is developed. A feature descriptor of indoor scene is proposed, that is a vector extracted from planes fitting parameters in several specified regions. First step, scene is classified as empty space and close space classes using feature extracted from disparity map with nearest neighbor method. In following step, both empty space and close space scene are classified into some subclasses using Gist and proposed feature descriptor. To test our approach we created a dataset of 4 indoor scenes categories. The experiments show that our approach got excellent classification performance. © 2011 IEEE.

The paper presents a fire detection method using HSI model and an improved Codebook model. Based on the statistical feature of fire, we can extract fire-like pixels with HSI model. Owing to the fact that fire is extending and flickering, we propose an improved Codebook model for background subtraction. As a result, moving objects (for example, fire, moving cars) can be detected. At last, utilizing a pixel fusion method, we add the dynamic and statistical fire-like pixels with different weighted values. Experimental results show that our fire detection algorithm is effective and robust.

Visual surveillance is increasingly prevalent today but the privacy issues of individuals involved in surveillance videos have not been dealt with adequately so far. In most cases, if not all, the chief purpose of placing a camera can be served without knowing the identity of the individuals involved unless the activity is of some predetermined kind. One needs to transform these videos to protect identity of individuals involved possibly at the source camera itself. In this paper we present the De-Identification Camera, which is a scalable, low cost and real-time solution to the privacy protection issues. Our main contribution lies in proposing a privacy protection architecture which transforms the video at the camera level itself, We also present and implement a de-identification pipeline which is suitable for real-time implementation. We implemented the system on a Texas Instrument OMAP4 based embedded platform and was able to de-identify videos in real time, transforming the video on the camera itself ensures protection from various attacks. We also address issues like data utility of surveillance videos by making this solution customizable. We propose that such systems can replace the traditional surveillance cameras in the future by providing all the surveillance and privacy protection solutions on hardware, probably with few performance upgrades. © 2011 IEEE.

Automatic car plate extraction is one of the interesting research areas in surveillance applications such as traffic control, parking lot and detection of stolen vehicles. This topic is divided in two main parts, firstly license plate localization, and secondly, license plate characters recognition. In this paper merely the first part is taken into consideration by means of morphological operations and labeling algorithm. Moreover, performance of proposed method is investigated to unveil the ability in extracting of the license plate. Space between characters and also height and width of the license plate are fundamental issues in morphological operations along with dimension of characters in labeling algorithm. Results for this method are promising even in tough conditions.

Moving object detection is a hot topic in computer vision. It is widely used in many areas, such as video monitoring, and intelligent traffic. This paper proposes a new method, which combines the T-test with the kirsch operator. First, the T-test method can detect the moving area between two frames of the video sequences while the kirsch operator can detect the contour of the objects. Second, the moving information fuses the contour information, so the experimental results can obtain both the moving information and the contour information. The morphologic operation is used to get the accurate information of the moving object. Finally, the moving objects are labeled in the video sequences. Experimental results prove that the proposed method is effective and robust. © 2011 IEEE.

FPGA has been used in many robotics projects for real-time image processing. It provides reliable systems with low execution time and simplified timing analysis. Many of these systems take a lot of time in development and testing phases. In some cases, it is not possible to test the system in real environments very often, due to accessibility, availability or cost problems. This paper is the result of a case study on vision systems for two robotics projects in which the vision team consisted of seven students working for six months fulltime on developing and implementing different image algorithms. While FPGA has been used for real-time image processing, some steps have been taken in order to reduce the development and testing phases. The main focus of the project is to integrate different testing methods with FPGA development. It includes a component based solution that uses a two-way communication with a PC controller for system evaluation and testing. Once the data is acquired from the vision board, the system stores it and simulates the same environment that has been captured earlier by feeding back the obtained data to FPGA. This approach addresses and implements a debugging methodology for FPGA based solutions which accelerate the development phase. In order to transfer massive information of images, RMII which is an interface for Ethernet communication, has been investigated and implemented. The provided solution makes changes easier, saves time and solves the problems mentioned earlier. © 2011 IEEE.

Automated image processing has the potential to assist in the early detection of Age-related macular degeneration, by detecting changes in blood vessel and patterns in the retina. Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is gradual loss of vision by oxidation of macula and most common cause of irreversible vision loss. The ARMD can be classified into 1. Dry macular degeneration 2. Wet macular degeneration. The purpose of this paper is to diagnose the retinal disease ARMD and to classify the two types. The extent of the disease spread in the retina can be identified by extracting the features of the retina. Detection of ARMD disease is done using Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) method and the two types are classified and diagnosed successfully. The results showed a sensitivity of 94.00% for the classifier and specificity of 95.00%. © 2011 IEEE.

Biomimetics is a rapidly developing discipline and has been suggested applicable in machine vision and image processing because human vision system has almost evolved to be perfect. Previously proposed BA+DRF method is a biomimetic image processing method which improves images quality effectively on the basis of the brightness adaption and disinhibitory properties of concentric receptive field (DRF). However, BA+DRF is not automatic and dynamic leading to the lack of practicability. This paper proposes an improved biomimetic image processing method, the parameterized LDRF method, to make BA+DRF method more adaptive and dynamic. Parameterized LDRF method constructed a parameterized logarithmic model to automatically enhance the image's global quality and constructed a model to dynamically adjust the gain factor which is used in improving the image's local quality. The experimental results have proved its ability of enhancing the image quality with keeping details. The improved biomimetic image processing method is applicable and automatic. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents a novel approach for ball carrier detection and behavior recognition in a basketball match. Considering the cluttered background, fast motion of the players and the low resolution of the player images in the basketball match video, a covariance descriptor is adopted to fuse multiple visual features of the player, which can be characterized as a point on the Riemannian manifold and can be projected to the tangent space through the homeomorphic mapping. Therefore, detection and behavior recognition of the ball carrier is simultaneously completed on the tangent space through the trained multiclass LogitBoost. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method performs well on video recorded in the NBA basketball matches. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper expounds on the design and the implementation of the intelligence (vision and brain) of an autonomous robot for landmines localization, specifically anti-tank mines, cluster bombs, or unexploded ordnance. The landmine sweeping technique under study utilizes state-of-the-art techniques in digital image processing for pre-processing captured images of the area being scanned. After enhancing the scanned images, data is fed into a processing unit that implements the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in order to classify the landmines' make and model. The Back-Propagation algorithm is used for teaching the network. The system proved to be able to identify and classify different types of landmines under various conditions with a success rate of up to 90%. Various conditions include different viewpoints of the landmine such as having a rotated landmine, or a partially covered landmine. © 2011 IEEE.
