The objective of the present study is to develop an automatic tool to identify and classify the different types of cocci bacterial cells in digital microscopic cell images using active contour method. Snakes, or active contours, are used extensively in computer vision and image processing applications, particularly to locate object boundaries. Geometric features are used to identify the arrangement of cocci bacterial cells, namely, cocci, diplococci, streptococci, tetrad, sarcinae and staphylococci using 3σ, K-NN and Neural Network classifiers. The current methods rely on the subjective reading of profiles by a human expert based on the various manual staining methods. In this paper, we propose a method for cocci bacterial cell classification by segmenting digital bacterial cell images and extracting geometric features for cell classification. The experimental results are compared with the manual results obtained by the microbiology expert and demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method. The experimentation is done using SEM digital images of various cocci bacterial communities. ©2010 IEEE.

In computer vision and pattern recognition, the role of image processing for image segmentation or object boundary recognition plays a key role. In traditional snake algorithm the boundary of image is considered as parametric curve. The process of finding an object boundary has become an energy minimization process. In the project work a combined process of GVF Snake algorithm which has larger capture range and stronger convergence ability to boundary concavities than traditional snake and SUSAN approach has been implemented. The Corner points at the edge are checked first using Susan approach and then those points are marked as energy minimization points, then GVF Snake model has been used to capture object boundary after set initial snake curve. The results obtained indicate that the combined approach of SUSAN and GVF Snake algorithms based segmentation process and further building and specialized object recognition system, which is being training by segmented images obtained by this approach can improve GVF snake model's precision to capture the boundary with sharpangled corner as well as Object recognition system. © 2010 IEEE.

The role of image processing in image segmentation and object boundary recognition has been significant. It finds application in various fields including the emerging field of Wireless Sensor Network, where vision sensors are deployed. vision sensors capture sequence of images from the sensor field and a sent to the base station for processing. image Segmentation involves separation of the region of interest in an image, from its background, as a set of points forming contours. In Traditional Snake (Contour) algorithm, the boundary of image is considered as parametric curve. The process of finding an object boundary is an energy minimization process. In this work, a combined process of Gradient Vector Flow (GVF) Snake algorithm and Smallest Univalue Segment Assimilating Nucleus (SUSAN) approach has been implemented. Further, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) system for object recognition based on the segmented image training has been implemented. The results obtained indicate that the combined approach of SUSAN and GVF Snake algorithm based segmentation process can improve GVF snake model's precision to capture the boundary with sharp-angled corners. The combined approach gives larger capture range and stronger convergence ability to boundary concavities than the traditional snake method, thus increasing the accuracy and reliability of the system. Results also show that the proposed method is both time and space efficient. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper proposed a new method of automated eliminating bubbles based on vision sense technology because detection and elimination of bubbles of injection materials is key factor which influences the quality of products and hinders realization of full automatic control for the vacuum casting. This method uses vision sensor to replace artificial visual measurement, and adopts processing of the bubbles images to judge the effect of eliminating bubbles instead of experiences of operators. This paper developed a bubbles monitoring control system to realize the automated eliminating bubbles method. The system adopts two-level distributed structure which is consisted of host and slave computers. The slave computer is composed of image acquisition module, controller module and execution module. It is responsible for controlling operation devices to finish vacuum casting. The host computer is responsible for supervisory control which includes human-machine interface module, camera control module and images analysis and processing module. The function of every module is described in detail. The operator is just needed to set relative parameters, and then the system will implement automatically. In a word, the controlling system based on this new method possesses some advantages such as high precision, efficiency and flexibility.

Everyday human communication relies on a large number of different communication mechanisms like spoken language, facial expressions, body pose and gestures, allowing humans to pass large amounts of information in short time. In contrast, traditional human-machine communication is often unintuitive and requires specifically trained personal. In this paper, we present a real-time capable framework that recognizes traditional visual human communication signals in order to establish a more intuitive human-machine interaction. Humans rely on the interaction partner's face for identification, which helps them to adapt to the interaction partner and utilize context information. Head gestures (head nodding and head shaking) are a convenient way to show agreement or disagreement. Facial expressions give evidence about the interaction partners' emotional state and hand gestures are a fast way of passing simple commands. The recognition of all interaction queues is performed in parallel, enabled by a shared memory implementation.(1)

Video is an important medium for the observation of a variety of phenomena in the physical world such as for water conservancy engineering. Video sensor networks (VSN) consists of a large number of sensor nodes with cheap CMOS cameras, therefore, it has the ability of large scale visual monitoring. However, a kind of powerful and scalable platform is urgent for simulation and development of VSN. This paper proposed a novel and scalable video sensor networks platform named as vision Mesh for water conservancy engineering. vision Mesh is composed of a mass of image or video sensor nodes - vision Motes, with which multi-view image or video information of FOV (Field of View) can be acquired simply. vision Mote is built with Atmel ARM9 CPU and operated on Linux operating system, with TI CC2430 Zigbee module taken as wireless transceiver. Furthermore, OpenCV machine vision lib is migrated to vision Mesh platform so as to improve video processing ability, therefore, vision Mesh has the ability of image and video processing and is of strong scalability to extend performance. In this paper, we provide an overview of vision Mesh architecture and provide an insightful platform for VSN.

In this paper, we present a novel method for human-computer interaction based on finger motion detection. image processing is used to get the position, motion direction and movement of the marked figure in the video image, and then associate them with the cursor position, motion direction and mouse function using windows underlying functions. Experimental results show that the method can accurately obtain the characteristic quantities of the marked figure, and actualize cursor movement and mouse clicking. It can be widely used in many fields such as teaching, gaming and computer remote controlling.

Enhanced vision especially in poor weather conditions can be achieved by image fusion between the infrared and visible images. image registration is a crucial step in image fusion. In order to register the infrared and visible images captured in poor weather conditions, the registration method combing the Bidimensional Empirical Model Decomposition (BEMD) with mutual information is proposed in this paper. After the infrared and visible images are decomposed into a set of Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) and residue respectively by BEMD, the parameters of affine transform can be obtained through using the maximum mutual information registration between IMFs images. Then, the transform matrix defined by these parameters is used to the source infrared image and the final registered image can be obtained through interpolation and resampling for the transformed image. This method is used to register two video sequences captured in dense fog. Experimental results show that this method gives better performance compared to other two methods.
