We describe the architecture and implementation of bilateral background subtraction for real-time stereo vision system. Pre-smoothing a signal and noise removal may help to improve the performance for many signal-processing algorithms such as compression, detection, enhancement, recognition, and more [2]. Bilateral filtering proposed by C. Tomasi and R. Manduchi can be used as an edge-preserving smoother, removing high-frequency components of an image without blurring its edges [ 1] [3]. Recently, [3] showed enhanced real-time stereo through software implementation of bilateral filtering. In this paper, we show hardware implementation of bilateral background subtraction for real-time stereo and present its architecture as well as required hardware resources. Also, we provide experimental results with real data and present our future works.

image fusion plays an important role in many fields such as computer vision, medical image, manufacturing, military, and remote sensing so on. Pulse coupled neural network (PCNN) is derived from the synchronous neuronal burst phenomena in the cat visual cortex. So it is very suitable for image processing. Due to some defects of original PCNN for data fusion, we propose a novel PCNN model - dualchannel PCNN for the first time based on original model, which is specialized in image fusion. In order to explain efficiency and validity of our proposed method, we take two medical images for example to explain further the advantages in comparison to other image fusion methods. Better results are obtained with our approach. Our fused image includes more information than others, which show our method is better and efficient one. Meanwhile our method not only fuses multi-source images very well but also enhances the quality of the fused image. © 2007 IEEE.

image segment is one of the most fundamental and difficult problems in image analysis and computer vision. The image thresholding problem is treated as an important issue in image processing, and it can not only reduce the image data, but also lay a good foundation for succedent target recognition and image understanding. Character of global thresholding segmentation and local thresholding was analyzed in image segmentation. A new thresholding statistic iterative arithmetic is presented to overcome the direct worth method in thresholding, aiming at some lighting asymmetry and the abrupt a blemish for, or bigger arithmetic figure in ratio in a variety in gray of background image. Statistics iterative thresholding segmentation, based on image gray histogram and Gauss statistics distributing, obtain the theory expression of statistics iterative method and the best worth thresholding method and steps. Aviation image was thresholding segmentation using statistic iterative arithmetic, histogram technique and adaptive method respectively. Compared three thresholding results, it shows that statistic iterative method greatly improved the anti-noise capability of image segmentation and had the good result to the image of the worth and not easy to segment in full value thresholding method.

although some major advances have been made in text searching;only preliminary work has been done in image search. The field of image search is rooted in Artificial intelligence, digital signal processing, statistics, natural language understanding, databases, psychology, computer vision, and pattern recognition. However none of these fields can solve the problem of image search alone but the solution lies at the crossroads of these parent fields. In our paper we are presenting a method of Contents Based image Search where geometrical shapes of the objects in the image are considered as contents of image. Each object is separated from the image by segmentation. Then the geometrical shape of the object is estimated and compared with a predefine set of shapes of different categories. Number of objects in an image and geometrical shape of the objects are used as contents of the image which is used for retrieval and searching. Number on objects in the image is used for first level of indexing in search process. Currently we have restricted our objects to a fix number of basic geometrical shapes for simplicity but. in futures these shapes can be extended and linked to the real world objects by using more complex equations and other features like, color, texture anti concept of correlation. Most of the existing image retrieval systems are based on text search using keywords that are annotated manually which involve;the intellectual and emotional sides of the human. But in our proposed system this process is somewhat automatic.

Visual surveillance has been an active research area in computer vision and image processing, due to its crucial role in helping military intelligence and law enforcement agencies to fight against crime and terrorist activities. The goal of a visual surveillance system is to detect abnormal object behaviors and to raise alarms when such behaviors are detected. After moving objects are detected, it is essential to classify them into predefined categories, so that their motion behaviors can be appropriately interpreted in the context of their identities and their interactions with the environment. Consequently, object classification is a vital component in a complete visual surveillance system. RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging) images are often undesirable in military applications because they reveal the location of the imaging system. So we explore visible and infrared images of ships which are generally more consistent than RADAR images and for which it is easier to compensate for environmental effects. Recent advances in visible and IR imaging technology improves its ability to observe objects at very long distances, but it is still militarily desirable to stay away as far as possible from potential enemy ships, which may be observed at different viewing angles. Several methods have been described in literature to perform the automatic classification of big ships (e.g. aircraftcarriers, combat ships, transportation ships, etc) from images, but none of them are based on small boat classification. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based target classification system is implemented for visible and IR small boat images which are captured in a highly cluttered background environment. Two robust segmentation algorithms were implemented, Graph-cut for grayscale IR small boat images, and Adaptive Progressive Thresholding (APT) for visible small boat images. These algorithms are tested for images captured in a highly cluttered background.

Moving object detection is currently one of the most active research topics in the domain of computer vision and video processing. In this paper, a simply and fast quadric binaryzation method is proposed to remove environmental noise points effectively. Moreover, based on the stability of drawing the contour from fixed scene, the background subtraction method is combined with the time-stepping method, an effective method which could be used to detect the movement areas. Through the average weighted of two means can realize to enhance the accuracy in distinguishing target. Experiment results have shown that this method gives stable performances and good robustness.

This paper describes a vision-based approach for obtaining high quality images of the weld pool and the surrounding area. The objective is to provide reliable real-time measurements of the molten pool width for use with a process controller. The weld pool contains important information about the welding process, which can be used by the process controller to adjust the welding parameters and regulate the weld pool width in order to allow for consistent welds. To extract the information from the weld pool, a novel vision-based system is developed. The basis of the system is to capture clear, stable and high quality images of the welding process for image analysis and processing. The extreme intensity of the arc light makes it impossible to see through the arc to the weld pool. Therefore, for effective viewing and in order to do any kind of image processing, the arc light intensity must be reduced or eliminated. © B.M. ABDULLAH, J.S. SMITH and B. LUCAS, 2006.

A new method for the catadioptric omnidirectional stereo vision with single camera is presented in this paper. The proposed method uses a concave lens with a convex mirror. Since the optical part of the proposed method is simple and commercially available, the resulting onmidirectional stereo system is compact and cost-effective. The closed-form solution for 3D distance is derived based on the simple optics including the reflection and the refraction of the convex mirror and the concave lens. The compactness of the system and the simplicity of the image processing make the omnidirectional stereo system appropriate for real-time applications such as autonomous navigation of a mobile robot or the object manipulation. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, an experimental prototype is implemented.

Foveal vision has been used as a way for sampling and reducing the amount of data in Cartesian images for vision systems. For this sampling, there are different approaches as the Log Polar Transform, the Exponential Cartesian Geometry and the Foveal Wavelet Transform between others. In this paper a new approach to obtain the foveal sampling and its application to single object tracking is presented. The approach uses the log polar formulation for the sampling but preserves the Cartesian properties of the information in the original image. In this way, it is possible to overcome the problems of nolinearity of the Log Polar Geometry. Furthermore, it allows an easier object location as the hierarchical processing used in the Exponential Cartesian Geometries and it is easy to implement because it does not imply complex operations for the sampling of the images and the recovery of the original image through the foveated image, contrary to the Foveal Wavelet Transform. The proposed geometry has been tested in diverse images sequences where a single object is tracked successfully by appearance based methods which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal.
