Nowadays, the importance of collecting large amounts of data is becoming increasingly crucial, along with the application of efficient and effective analysis techniques, in many areas. One of the most important field in which Big Data is becoming of fundamental importance is the biomedical domain, also due to the decreasing cost of acquiring and analyzing biomedical data. Furthermore, the emergence of more accessible technologies and the increasing speed-up of algorithms, also thanks to parallelization techniques, is helping at making the application of Big Data in healthcare a fast-growing field. This paper presents a novel framework, Biomedical Hadoop imageprocessing Interface (BioHIPI), capable of storing biomedical image collections in a Distributed File System (DFS) for exploiting the parallel processing of Big Data on a cluster of machines. The work is based on the Apache Hadoop technology and makes use of the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) for storing images, the MapReduce libraries for parallel programming for processing, and Yet Another Resource Negotiator (YARN) to run processes on the cluster.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the record of origin and propagation of electrical potential through cardiac muscles. It provides information about heart functioning. Generally, ECG is printed on thermal paper. The person having heart abnormalities will have to maintain all the records for the diagnosis purpose, which requires large storage space and is minimized by storing in the computer using scanner. The stored data is processed manually, which is time consuming. So an automatic algorithm that is developed does the conversion of the ECG image to digital signal. In order to convert the image, imageprocessing methods like binarization, morphological techniques have been used. Usage of morphological skeletonization helps in converting the image to digital signal form by finding the skeleton of the ECG signal. The performance of the conversion algorithm is analyzed using root-mean-square error (RMSE), and it was found good. The average error found between the binarized image and the skeletonized image is nearly 7.5%.

In this paper, we describe the formatting guidelines for ACM SIG Proceedings. In this paper, we mainly introduce the haze removal algorithm which using color attenuation prior. We also propose a novel solution in the case of particular situations. Moreover, in order to make the algorithm more accurate, we propose a hierarchical searching method based on the quad-tree subdivision for estimating atmospheric light. In addition, we employ the shiftable window scheme to improve the guided filter, so that it can refine the depth map while effectively protecting image edge. Experimental result shows that our proposed method not only can obviously remove the haze from the haze image, but also the performance is more reliable in the case of particular situations.

Purpose Endomicroscopy (EM) provides high resolution, non-invasive histological tissue information and can be used for scanning of large areas of tissue to assess cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions and their margins. However, current robotic solutions do not provide the accuracy and force sensitivity required to perform safe and accurate tissue scanning. Methods A new surgical instrument has been developed that uses a cable-driven parallel mechanism (CPDM) to manipulate an EM probe. End-effector forces are determined by measuring the tensions in each cable. As a result, the instrument allows to accurately apply a contact force on a tissue, while at the same time offering high resolution and highly repeatable probe movement. Results 0.2 and 0.6 N force sensitivities were found for 1 and 2 DoF image acquisition methods, respectively. A back-stepping technique can be used when a higher force sensitivity is required for the acquisition of high quality tissue images. This method was successful in acquiring images on ex vivo liver tissue. Conclusion The proposed approach offers high force sensitivity and precise control, which is essential for robotic EM. The technical benefits of the current system can also be used for other surgical robotic applications, including safe autonomous control, haptic feedback and palpation.

The Point Pair Feature [4] has been one of the most successful 6D pose estimation method among model-based approaches as an efficient, integrated and compromise alternative to the traditional local and global pipelines. During the last years, several variations of the algorithm have been proposed. Among these extensions, the solution introduced by Hinterstoisser et al. [6] is a major contribution. This work presents a variation of this PPF method applied to the SIXD Challenge datasets presented at the 3rdinternational Workshop on Recovering 6D Object Pose held at the ICCV 2017. We report an average recall of 0.77 for all datasets and overall recall of 0.82, 0.67, 0.85, 0.37, 0.97 and 0.96 for hinterstoisser, tless, tudlight, rutgers, tejani and doumanoglou datasets, respectively.
