Fundamental disciplinary differences may be traceable to the use of visual representations, with researchers in the physical and life sciences relying more heavily on visuality. Our goal was to examine how inscriptions are used by scientists in different disciplines. We analyzed 2,467 articles from journals in biology, criminology and criminal justice, gerontology, library and information science, medicine, psychology, and sociology. Proportion of page space dedicated to graphs, tables, and non-graph illustrations was calculated. A Visuality Index was defined as the proportion of page space dedicated to visual depictions of data and non-data information. An ANOVA indicated a statistically significant difference between disciplines, interaction between inscription type and discipline, with articles published in biology journals dedicating more page space to graphs. The significant overlap in inscription use and visuality indicates imperfect disciplinary demarcation, suggesting similar methodological and data analytic practices within a discipline and between subdisciplines.

Assembly planning is a difficult problem for companies. Many disciplines such as design, planning, scheduling, and manufacturing execution need to be carefully engineered and coordinated to create successful product assembly plans. Recent research in the field of design for assembly has proposed new methodologies to design product structures in such a way that their assembly is easier. However, present assembly planning approaches lack the engineering tool support to capture all the constraints associated to assembly planning in a unified manner. This paper proposes COMPOSITIONALPLANNING, a string diagram based framework for assembly planning. In the proposed framework, string diagrams and their compositional properties serve as the foundation for an engineering tool where CAD designs interact with planning and scheduling algorithms to automatically create high-quality assembly plans. These assembly plans are then executed in simulation to measure their performance and to visualize their key build characteristics. We demonstrate the versatility of this approach in the LEGO assembly domain. We developed two reference LEGO CAD models that are processed by COMPOSITIONALPLANNING'S algorithmic pipeline. We compare sequential and parallel assembly plans in a Minecraft simulation and show that the time-to-build performance can be optimized by our algorithms.

Comparative Literature, a course for junior English majors in China, demands advanced cognitive skills and critical thinking to navigate diverse literary works. However, English majors in China traditionally receive intensive foundational language training in the first two years, which often hinders their seamless transition to the analytical, synthesizing, and evaluative skills required in the latter stages of their studies. Therefore, within the Chinese academic context, we design a literature-oriented Comparative Literature Course for English majors assisted by mind mapping tools. Commencingwith an orientation on course objectives and the integration of mind mapping for literature review assistance, the 16-week course entails students attending 8-week theoretical lectures and delivering 8-week group presentations. The posted comments and interviews after the implementation of the course indicate that mind mapping acts as a scaffold for the enhancement of higher-order cognitive abilities and logical reasoning among junior students. Besides, the visualization feature of mind maps facilitates students' collaborative learning and interactive communication. Additionally, the paper addresses challenges that may arise in the application of this approach and offering insightful suggestions for its potential implementation in other related courses.

Knowledge representation and inference is a key issue of Knowledge Grid. This paper proposes Knowledge Map (KM) model for representing and reasoning causal knowledge as an overlay in Knowledge Grid. It extends Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) to represent and infer not only cause-effect causal relations, but also time-delay causal relations, conditional probabilistic causal relations and sequential relations. Mathematical model and inference rules of KM are presented. Simulations show that KM is more powerful than FCM in emulating real world.

Does the choice of colour-coding scheme affect the usability of metro maps, as measured by the accuracy and speed of navigation? Using colour to differentiate lines or services in maps of metro rail networks has been a common practice around the world for many decades. Broadly speaking, there are two basic schemes: 'route colouring', in which each end-to-end route has a distinct colour, and 'trunk colouring', in which each major trunk has a distinct colour, and the individual routes inherit the colour of the main trunk that they run along. A third, intermediate scheme is 'shaded colouring', in which each trunk has a distinct colour, and each route has a distinct shade of that colour. In this study, 285 volunteers in the US were randomised to these three colour-coding schemes and performed seventeen navigational tasks. Each task involved tracing a route in the New York City subway map. Overall, we found that route colouring was significantly more accurate than the trunk-and shaded-colouring schemes. A planned subset analysis, however, revealed major differences between specific navigational hazards: route colouring performed better only against certain navigational hazards;trunk colouring performed best against one hazard;and other hazards showed no effect of colour coding. Route colouring was significantly faster only in one subset.

Distributed systems that dynamically adapt to changing environments should be developed based on incrementally defined, loosely coupled services. But current middleware platforms tend to encourage monolithic services that are tightly coupled with their environments. We suggest that the non-incremental nature of middleware services is due in part to the lack of support for implementation inheritance, and that tight coupling is due to insufficient support for interface abstraction. Interface-oriented programming (IOP) is an extension of object-oriented programming in which all program inter-dependencies, including inheritance dependencies, are expressed using interface abstractions. This encourages development of partial classes, and requires a new program linking mechanism called representation inference to integrate them. We propose that a distributed implementation of IOP including partial services and distributed service inference could address some of the limitations of middleware systems, providing new opportunities for performance reflection and transparent adaptation. Exact non-parametric confidence, prediction and tolerance intervals with progressive type-II censoring

This article extends recent results [Scand. J. Statist. 28 (2001) 699] about exact non-parametric inferences based on order statistics with progressive type-II censoring. The extension lies in that non-parametric inferences are now covered where the dependence between involved order statistics cannot be circumvented. These inferences include: (a) tolerance intervals containing at least a specified proportion of the parent distribution, (b) prediction intervals containing at least a specified number of observations in a future sample, and (c) outer and/or inner confidence intervals for a quantile interval of the parent distribution. The inferences are valid for any parent distribution with continuous distribution function. The key result shows how the probability of an event involving k dependent order statistics that are observable/uncensored with progressive type-II censoring can be represented as a mixture with known weights of corresponding probabilities involving k dependent ordinary order statistics. Further applications/developments concerning exact Kolmogorov-type confidence regions are indicated.

Exploiting problem domain knowledge for accurate building image classification

An approach for classification of building images through rule-based fuzzy inference is presented. It exploits rough matching and problem domain knowledge to improve precision results. This approach uses knowledge representation based on a fuzzy reasoning model for establishing a bridge between visual primitives and their interpretations. Knowledge representation goes from low level to high level features. The knowledge is acquired from both visual content and users. These users provide the interpretations of low level features as well as their knowledge and experience to improve the rule base. Experiments are tailored to building image classification. This approach can be extended to other semantic categories, i.e. skyline, vegetation, landscapes. Results show that proposed method is promising support for semantic annotation of image/video content.

As a method of sharing information on the Internet, Q&A boards are used a lot. However, it is difficult to extract the exact answer from the great deal of information by using only the keyword search method on the Wireless Internet. Our system makes the inference execute by using the ontology that consists of rdF and rdFS, i.e. the knowledge representation language of semantic web and the similarity measure algorithm on the class property. In this system, the mobile agent based on JAVA is used to share the information on a distributed environment. With the experiment we show our system is more effective in respect of precision than the keyword matching search method. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
