internet of Things (IoT) is indeed a novel technology wave that is bound to make its mark, where anything and everything (Physical objects) is able to communicate over an extended network using both wired and wireless protocols. The term "physical objects" means that any hardware device that can sense a real world parameter and can push the output based on that reading. Considering the number of such devices, volume of data they generate and the security concerns, not only from a communication perspective but also from its mere physical presence outside a secure/monitored vault demands innovative architectural approaches, applications and end user systems. A middleware platform/framework for IoT should be able to handle communication between these heterogeneous devices, their discoveries and services it offers in real time. A move from internet of computers to internet of anything and everything is increasing the span of security threats and risks. A comparative study of existing prominent IoT platforms will help in identifying the limitations and gaps thereby acting as the benchmark in building an efficient solution.

RICO: A low power repetitive iteration COrdIC for DSP applications in portable devices

COordinate Rotation Digital Computer (COrdIC) is a unit that is widely used in the applications such as scientific calculators, signal/image processing, communication systems, robotics, 3-D graphics etc. exhibits huge computations and requires large power. This paper presents an approximate low power Repetitive Iteration COrdIC (RICO) architecture that calculates sine/cosine values very efficiently. In the proposed RICO, number of iterations are fixed and a specific iteration is repeated to reduce the implementation complexity. An additional comparator based logic that evaluates direction of micro-rotation within RICO reduces the data dependency between each iterations. The efficiency of the proposed RICO is evaluated in Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) by implementing DCT using only three RICO units. Post-synthesis simulation results show that the proposed RICO achieves area and power savings of 37.19% and 94.05% respectively over the Conventional COrdIC at the cost of 29.39% increase in latency. This paper is mainly concerned with the static interconnection network, its topological properties and metrics, particularly for exiting topologies and proposed one. The interconnection network topology is a key factor in determining the characteristics of parallel computers;suitable topology provides efficiency increment while performing tasks. In the recent years, there are numerous topologies available with various characteristics need to be improved. In this research we analyzed existing static interconnection topologies and developed a novel topology by minimizing some degradation factors of topological properties. A novel topology, Spider-web topology is proposed and shows a considerable advantage over the existing topologies. Further, one of the major aims of this work is to do a comparative study of the existing static interconnection networks with this novel topology by analyzing the properties and metrics. Both theoretical-based and experimental-based comparison conducted here shows that the proposed topology is able to perform better than the existing topologies.

The Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHA) identification is designed to distinguish between computers and humans and it prevents the web application programs from malicious attacks, so it has been applied widely. However, great challenges must be faced with the development of CAPTCHA identification. In order to improve the safety of the professional system, the CAPTCHA online identification based on the knowledge base, which has high security and bases on semantic questions and the professionalization of professional system, is put forward combining with the recessive CAPTCHA. The specific implementation course of the new online identification method is worked out according to the example of animal identification. The application of the verification code is suitable for people who have the corresponding professional knowledge. Because the computer has great difficulty to answer semantic information questions, which are also professional issues, so the new online identification method based on the verification of knowledge has very high security.

We had proposed a distributed storage system which relocates data blocks autonomously among the storage nodes. Generally, owing to requirement of exchanging the management information frequently, such autonomous block migration tends to increase network traffic. Our previous work has presented a scheme to reduce network traffic by appending the management information onto an iSCSI short packet. In this paper, we present a scheme to propagate the management information by utilizing internode communications more aggressively. Our scheme utilizes iSCSI read/write packets which are exchanged more frequently to transmit the management information, and appends also the management information which is collected from the other nodes. This indirect propagation helps to reduce broadcast packets on the network. We have investigated the traffic behavior in the iSCSI environment, and show that our scheme can effectively reduce extra Ethernet frames for exchanging the management information.

Fog/Edge computing infrastructures have been proposed as an alternative of current Cloud computing facilities to address the latency issue that prevents the development of several applications. The main idea is to deploy smaller data-centers at the edge of the backbone in order to bring Cloud computing resources closer to the end-usages. While coupleof works illustrated the advantages of such infrastructures in particular for the internet of Things (IoT) applications, the way of designing elementary services that can take advantage of such massively distributed infrastructures has not been yet discussed. In this paper, we propose to deal with such a question from the storage point of view. First, we propose a list of properties a storage system should meet in this context. Second, we evaluate through performance analysis three "off-the-shelf" object store solutions, namely Rados, Cassandra and InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). In particular, we focused (i) on access times to push and get objects under different scenarios and (ii) on the amount of network traffic that is exchanged between the different sites during such operations. Experiments have been conducted using the Yahoo Cloud System Benchmark (YCSB) on top of the Grid'5000 testbed. We show that among the three tested solutions IPFS fills most of the criteria expected for a Fog/Edge computing infrastructure.

In view of the practical application problems of the traditional parallel processing technology existing in the processing of the massive data, using the powerful cloud computing power and the efficient massive data processing method, combined with the advantages of the real-time access of the relational database, based on the Hadoop distributed computing framework, using the Map-Reduce framework, the author designs and implements the massive data processing platform based on the cloud computing. Practice has proved that the system is superior to the traditional parallel processing technology in the computing power, the stability, the scalability and other aspects, and can effectively solve the large concurrent access of the massive data. In many industries and institutions, the rapid batch processing of the large data sets of the large and medium-sized databases and data warehouses has the wide range of the application requirements. How to realize the fast and interactive batch processing of the massive data is an increasingly prominent problem in the management information system, and it is also the key problem to be solved in the engineering of the data sets. The traditional data platform based on the parallel processing has been unable to meet the actual requirements of the massive data processing, and the architecture of the massive information technology urgently needs the dynamic and scalable storage and calculation model, in order to achieve the rapid response mechanism. In the large-scale database, the data query, analysis, extraction, updating and other batch processing processes are facing the serious practical problems. First, the traditional database is complex, and the query time is too long. When we are faced with a query task with the large amount of the data, it even cannot complete it. Combining mobile computing and cloud computing has opened the door recently for numerous applications that were not possible before due to the limited capabilities of mobile devices. Computation intensive applications are offloaded to the cloud, hence saving phone's energy and extending its battery life. However, energy savings are influenced by the wireless network conditions. In this paper, we propose considering contextual network conditions in deciding whether to offload to the cloud or not. An energy model is proposed to predict the energy consumed in offloading data under the current network conditions. Based on this prediction, a decision is taken whether to offload, to execute the application locally, or to delay offloading until detecting improvement in network conditions. We evaluated our approach by extending ThinkAir, a computation offloading framework proposed in [1], by our proposed energy model and delayed offloading algorithm. Experiments results showed considerable savings in energy with an average of 57% of the energy consumed by the application compared with the original static decision module implemented by ThinkAir.

The deployment of internet of Things (IoT) smart devices, including sensors, is progressing at a rapid pace. However, the volume of data they generate is becoming difficult to store and process on local platforms. The scalability offered by Cloud computing provides a solution to this problem. Cloud computing provides resources at low cost for its users. However, platform-independent methods of gathering and transmitting sensor data to Clouds are not widely available. This paper presents a Cloud-based smart device data monitoring, gathering and processing platform. It first reviews the state-of-the-art embodied by the existing solutions and discusses their strengths and weaknesses. Informed by the survey analysis, a generic architecture is presented that addresses the identified challenges facing data gathering and processing in this area. Based on use case scenarios, we evaluate and demonstrate the novelty of our proposed platform.

With every device capable of emitting data, the need to amass and process them in real time or near real time, along with ever growing user requirement of, information-on-demand, have paved the way for the sudden surge in the development of the theme internet of Things (IoT). Even though this whole new technology looks fascinating in theory, its practical implementation and ongoing sustenance is something that will need a lot of thought, effort and careful planning. Several cloud based and network based cloud platforms/middleware solutions are available but a lot of them are either extremely complex to set up, or needs standardized solutions to be applied across all participating devices or would leave behind vivid security loopholes that can't be curbed with ease considering the overall capability of the devices involved. Based on a previous research effort conducted by our team, detailed scrutiny of prominent existing IoT platforms/middleware solutions were performed. This effort has resulted in defining the core problem matrix which if addressed adequately could result in the development of a well balanced IoT middleware solution. This paper uses the problem matrix so identified as the roadmap in defining a Secure, Scalable, Interoperable internet of Things Middleware.
