We address the problem of automatically constructing basis functions for linear approximation of the value function of a Markov Decision Process (MDP). Our work builds on results by Bertsekas and Castanon (1989) who proposed a method for automatically aggregating states to speed up value iteration. We propose to use neighborhood component analysis (Goldberger et al., 2005), a dimensionality reduction technique created for supervised learning, in order to map a high-dimensional state space to a low-dimensional space, based on the Bellman error, or on the temporal difference (TD) error. We then place basis function in the lower-dimensional space. These are added as new features for the linear function approximator. This approach is applied to a high-dimensional inventory control problem.

In order to improve the maintainability and extendibility of systems, a bus-type approach of component composition based on component composition's principle and software architecture was proposed. In the bus-type approach, system is decomposed into different components, which communicate with each other through a message bus. The approach can make the components transparent to each other, so as to add, delete or replace a component. The approach is applied to develop EAM (Enterprise Asset Management) system. It shows that the approach can improve the maintainability and extendibility of EAM system significantly.

Coding platforms provide challenges for users to solve in order to improve their programming skills, utilizing elements of both Technology Enhanced Learning and gamification. Inspired by previous approaches, this article presents a coding platform focused on competition, and its evaluation in the context of tertiary programming education. The system provides programming challenges for two users to compete against each other in real time. We seek to answer the question whether this notion of one-on-one competition can increase motivation to solve programming tasks. Two user studies were conducted in order to evaluate the effects of the system's competitive component on users' self-assessment, enjoyment, and motivation. The results of these studies suggest that this kind of competitive environment in programming leads to learners assessing themselves more distinctively, while their enjoyment decreases. Furthermore, learners' motivation drops in competition with others, although it remains on a high level. Learners who already achieved a relatively high level of programming knowledge are generally more inclined to enjoy competitive game components in programming. We conclude that competition in programming education does not necessarily have solely positive effects on learners' experiences. The inclusion of competition in tertiary computer science education might prove to be useful, but further research needs to be conducted to identify the best way of integrating it into educational concepts.

Software defect is an important factor that influences software quality. In this paper, we apply principal component analysis(PCA) to analyze the factors which lead to defects, and determine the important factors. In the process of software projects developing, we make use of the analysis results to improve the developing process. The results show that our method can avoid software defect effectively, and improve software quality.

This work-in-progress paper presents a study that sheds light on the concerns that students may not develop sufficient programming skills and as a result, be less competent with the use of ChatGPT. The potential benefits for students are significant: Access to ChatGPT increases the ability for students to work constructively on their own schedule. The ease of use of ChatGPT may engage students who might otherwise hesitate in asking for support. Before these tools can be meaningfully introduced into a course, work must be done to study the impact of these AI tools on a student's ability to learn. In this study, participants are recruited from introductory Java programming courses at a large public university in the United States. This paper presents preliminary findings from a mixed method study design that consists of a pre-task assessment quiz;and a programming task in one of three conditions: (1) with no external help, (2) with the help of an AI chatbot, or (3) with the help of a generative AI tool like GitHub Copilot;followed by a post-task assessment and an interview on their experience and perceptions of the tools. Our preliminary findings describe our data collection, thematic analysis of the students' prompts and chatGPT responses, and a summary of the experience for 3 students. Our findings demonstrate a range of students' attitudes and behaviors towards chatGPT that provides insight for future research and plans for incorporating such AI tools in a course. © 2023 IEEE.

Software Systems are becoming increasingly complex leading to new Validation &Verification challenges. Model checking and testing techniques are used at development time while runtime verification aims to verify that a system satisfies a given property at runtime. This second technique complements the first one. This paper presents a runtime contract checker (RCC) which checks a component-based software system's contracts defined at design phase. We address embedded systems whose software components are designed by Unified Modelling Language-State Machines (UML-SM) and their internal information can be observable in terms of model elements at runtime. Our previous research work, CRESCO (C++ REflective State-Machines based observable software components) framework, generates software components that provide this observability. The checker uses software components' internal status information to check system level safety contracts. The checker detects when a system contract is violated and starts a safeStop process to prevent the hazardous scenario. Thus, the robustness of the system is increased. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Selecting accurate Radar Cross Section (RCS) sequence historical data has an important impact on RCS-based spatial target attitude anomaly detection. RCS is related to factors such as satellite shape size, attitude and radar observation angle, and is a sensitive function of observation angle variation. In this paper, the influence of spatial observation geometric relationship on spatial target RCS sequence is analysed. Aiming at the orbital regression characteristics unique to spatial targets, a spatial target RCS historical data screening method based on dynamic time programming (DTW) distance is proposed. According to the relationship between the azimuth and the elevation angles of the radar line of sight, the orbit data with similar spatial geometry is found from the historical data. The orbital data of the system. This method can reduce the impact of Earth's rotation on data observation and establish a more efficient database. The variational mode decomposition (VMD) of RCS is carried out, and the fractal box dimension of each component is extracted as the data feature, and the BP neural network is used as the classifier for the anomaly detection. The simulation results prove that compared with the traditional historical data collection method, this method can improve the attitude detection rate of space targets and has better robustness. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Summary form only given. There is an increasing need for engineering models that provide better representation of a software application. Software manufacturers are hoping to make an application from the composition of several software components in a way very similar to the hardware components. However, applications are currently bounded to the traditional programming models and services provided by current operating systems. Although current component models support component based development, they are at the end governed by the legacy roles imposed by the operating systems. In this paper, we introduce the EZeus component object model (ECM). We show that ECM exhibits most of the component-based software engineering advantages. ECM is an independent component model that allows developers to craft applications purely out of components that interact efficiently. The components are not dependent on particular operating systems.
