In this paper, based on the enhanced fisher discriminant criterion (EFDC), a new feature extraction method called uncorrelated enhanced diversity fisher discriminant analysis (UEDFDA) is proposed for face recognition. UEDFDA defines the parameterless diversity weighted matrix by taking both the class label information and the local structure into account. Thus UEDFDA can preserve the local diversity structure of the data without setting any parameters. Moreover, UEDFDA is able to extract the uncorrelated discriminant vectors in the feature space and overcomes the small sample size problem, which is desirable for face recognition. Experimental results on the face databases show the feasibility and validity of the proposed method.

Altering the semantics of programs has become of major interest. This is due to the necessity of adapting existing software, for instance to achieve interoperability between off-the-shelf components. A system allowing such alterations should operate at the bytecode level in order to preserve portability and to be useful for pieces of software whose source code is not available. Furthermore, working at the bytecode level should be done while keeping high-level abstractions so that it can be useful to a wide audience. In this paper, we present Jinline, a tool that operates at load time through bytecode manipulation. Jinline makes it possible to inline a method body before, after, or instead of occurrences of language mechanisms within a method. It provides appropriate high-level abstractions for fine-grained alterations while offering a good expressive power and a great ease of use. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Net Zero Carbon 2050 requires a shift to renewable energy (RE) such as the photovoltaic system. However, the uncertainty of RE will cause electrical system interruptions, excess energy output, and a lack of electricity supply. Energy storage systems (ESSs) can be used to solve supply problems, but they should consider the reliability component of the power system. It is important to assess the impact of RE incorporated ESS for reliability studies. Optimal allocation of RE incorporating ESS needs to be tackled to ensure the grid failures and their impacts. This research shows the optimal allocation of RE with ESSs for power system reliability. The Force Outage Rate (FOR) for the energy storage system, photovoltaic system, and weather conditions was obtained from the development of each Markov model. Then, each FOR is combined to get the new FOR. The value of LOLE must be below 0.1 per year or 2.4 hours per year and the value of EUE should close to zero. Accordingly, this paper shows that the optimal allocation of PV incorporating ESS that minimizes the LOLE and EUE while satisfying the installation target and constraints on reliability indices.

Self-regulation of learning (SRL) is considered a vital skill in education, empowering students to control their learning process across multiple subjects. However, students often lack SRL abilities, which might impact their academic performance. One strategy to mitigate this problem is supporting students to assist their regulatory processes. Despite positive results in other subjects, how this support influences programming learning still needs further evidence. This study aims to contribute to this field by examining how the provision of SRL support influences students' programming performance and code development. The following research questions were established: RQ1) How does the programming performance of the group that received SRL support compare to that of the control group without support? RQ2) Do students receiving SRL support commit fewer programming errors than the control group without support? RQ3) Do students receiving SRL support maintain a more consistent learning routine than the control group without support? RQ4) What is the relationship between SRL abilities, programming performance, error commitment, and learning routine? To achieve this objective, a single-blind randomized experiment was conducted, and students were grouped into two experimental conditions, one receiving SRL support and a control group without support. Forty-nine students enrolled in an online introductory programming course participated in this study. The findings revealed that students who received SRL support achieved superior course grades, highlighting the benefit of this type of intervention. At the same time, the influence of SRL support and SRL abilities on programming error commitment is still unclear. Possibilities for future research to expand knowledge about the influence of SRL on code develonment are discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

Underwater optical image play a significant role in the exploration ocean. However there are diverse causes of distorted underwater optical scenes, such as light refraction, absorption, scattering and so on. Images enhancement is indispensable in low-level and high-level underwater vision task. Therefore, a novel method based on generative Adversarial Networks is presented in this paper, which is able to recover lost information for underwater distorted images. No matter from color, detail or texture, the underwater images reconstructed by our approach been greatly improved. In addition, a novel solution is provided for lacking paired dataset which is needed for network train. At last, many qualitative and quantitative experiments are carried out, which can demonstrate that our approach proposed in this paper is robust and effective.

With the higher utilization of inverter-interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) into the distribution networks, major protection challenges became more prevalent, as they are characterized by their low fault current contribution which results in a narrow coordination margin between primary and backup relays. This paper proposes an optimized time-current-voltage tripping characteristic for directional over-current relays (DOCRs). The goal is to minimize the overall operation time of relays as much as possible, and this is achieved by formulating the optimal protection coordination (OPC) problem as a constrained non-linear programming problem, which is then solved using the precise mathematical tools provided by the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) optimization software. Lastly, the suggested relay characteristic is evaluated on a radial microgrid with nine buses, which is a component of the urban Canadian distribution network, to verify its effectiveness.

Summary form only given. Assessing the reusability, adaptability, compose-ability and flexibility of software components is more and more of a necessity due to the growing popularity of component based software development (CBSD). Even if there are some metrics defined for the reusability of object-oriented software (OOS), they cannot be used for CBSD because these metrics require analysis of source code. The aim of this paper is to study the adaptability and compose-ability of software components, both qualitatively and quantitatively. We propose metrics and a mathematical model for the above-mentioned characteristics of software components. The interface characterization is the starting point of our evaluation. The adaptability of a component is discussed in conjunction with the complexity of its interface. The compose-ability metric defined for database components is extended for general software components. We also propose a metric for the complexity and adaptability of the problem solved by a component, based on its use cases. The number of alternate flows from the use case narrative is considered as a measurement for the complexity of the problem solved by a component. This was our starting point in developing a set of metrics for evaluating components functionality-wise. The main advantage of defining these metrics is the possibility to measure adaptability, reusability and quality of software components, and therefore to identify the most effective reuse strategy.

Face recognition being the most significant part of the biometrics and video surveillance systems has to deal with many challenges like pose, illumination, distance, expression variations along with occlusion, low resolution and noise. This paper analyses the latest approaches and methodologies adapted by Face Recognition systems in overcoming the challenges with the focus on their performance on publicly available bench-mark face databases. Few of the approaches discussed in this paper are Local Binary Pattern technique, Reference Face Graph framework, Principal component Analysis algorithm, Linear Discriminant Analysis algorithm, MLP Neural Networks, 3D Modeling, Back Propagation Neural Network, Local Pavithra S G Bhat Gradient Hexa Pattern descriptor, FPGA based architecture, Conditional generative Adversarial Networks and Trunk-Branch Ensemble Convolutional Neural Networks. This paper provides an insight for selection of an approach for future researchers and practitioners for real world implementation.

Multiple Outputs Programmable Integrated Circuits (MOPICs) trainer for educational applications is fabricated based on unsatisfactory usage of PIC simulation which is not able to achieve the learning outcome especially in enhancing leaner's hands-on skill through circuit designing, connection and trouble shooting. Current PIC programming is done through computer simulation, cause the leaners facing difficulty in understanding the wiring connection between the input component, PIC microcontroller and output components. The fabrication of MOPICs trainer was designed and improved by adding more output components, cost effective and user friendly. Moreover, MOPICs trainer are embedded with input component such as normally open push buttons, and 5 difference output components such as seven-segment display, servomotor, LEDs, LCD display, and 12VDC motor. Newly fabricated MOPIC trainer can be programme and re-programme for numerous tasks. Based on respondent questionnaire, it is show that on average of 92.59% agreed that newly developed MOPICs trainer is user friendly, safe and attractive to be used while 94.64% respondent agreed that there are enhancements in theoretical knowledge aspect and hands-on skill implementation in their learning process.
