Quality control in switch manufacturing requires both an electrical test and full analysis of switch's plastic surface to mount. This paper describes an automatic system for stain and dent fault-detection for the plastic surface of switches during its manufacturing. Two different images of every switch are used: in the former, the switch is illuminated with fuzzy and uniform white light intended to magnify the visual effects of the stain; in the latter, a known striped pattern is projected on the switch so that a dent or a bump at the plastic surface will result in a modified pattern that would easily be detected by the system. The inspection unit is designed to operate as a real-time and low-cost system. So, a single inspection unit takes and processes both pictures. Furthermore, another operation is performed for unfaulty parts that pass the inspection test: they are properly oriented for further assembling processes based on their serigraphied symbols. Some improvements could be made to the system at the expense of low-cost constraints that involve better accuracy and provide with more robustness in few specific cases.

Humans are quite adept at recognizing and labeling regions and objects in visual scenes. One of the cues for such labeling is the spatial relationships exhibited among the regions. This is usually coupled with the interpreter's understanding and expectations of scene content. For example, it is normally the case that, in a natural outdoor scene, the sky should be above the trees and that vehicles should be on a road. Context plays a very important role in the interpretation of an image. This determination of spatial relations has been a difficult task to automate. There have been several attempts at defining spatial relationships between regions in a digital image, most recently, with the use of fuzzy set theory. In this paper, we examine three methods for defining spatial relations to gain insight into this complex situation.

A computer vision approach for the extraction of feature points on 3D images of dental imprints is presented. The position of feature points are needed for the measurement of a set of parameters for automatic diagnosis of malocclusion problems in orthodontics. The system for the acquisition of the 3D profile of the imprint, the procedure for the detection of the interstices between teeth, and the approach for the identification of the type of tooth are described, as well as the algorithm for the reconstruction of the surface of each type of tooth. A new approach for the detection of feature points, called the watershed algorithm, is described in detail. The algorithm is a two-stage procedure which tracks the position of local minima at four different scales and produces a final map of the position of the minima. Experimental results of the application of the watershed algorithm on actual 3D images of dental imprints are presented for molars, premolars and canines. The segmentation approach for the analysis of the shape of incisors is also described in detail.

Perceptual grouping is an important phase in imageprocessing for object recognition. When primitive objects are grouped, a measure of certainty of the group is useful both in deciding which of competing groupings to make and in recognizing objects by matching models to the eventual groups. Fuzzy measures are a useful form for describing certainty in grouping. In this paper, we derive three fuzzy measures for primitive grouping, and discuss the extension to fuzzy measures for hierarchical grouping.< >

Information about the spatial organization in an image is an important clue towards identifying, or interpreting the contents of the image. In this paper the authors present a fuzzy logic method of representation, recognition and description of spatial relations between regions in an image which takes into account shape, size, orientation, or more generally a region as a whole. The method can be applied equally to crisp and fuzzy regions of the image, or combinations of these. Several examples are used to illustrate the results given by this method.< >

The major aim of conformal therapy is to engulf the tumor volume by a high radiation dose while minimizing the exposure of the surrounding healthy tissue. Visualization of the tumor volume, dose, and surrounding tissue is an important step in determining if the proposed treatment plan is optimal or even acceptable. This paper investigates the use of interactive volume visualization for the dose volume as well as the anatomical data. A commercially available volumetric processor capable of computing 10 million transformed and trilinearly interpolated points per second is used to generate multiplanar reformatted (MPR) and 3D displays of patient anatomy and radiation dose. The dose is treated as a volume data set in it's own right, which allows for the arbitrary selection of any isodose surface with interactive control of dose level and relative beam weights for multi beam treatment plans. A coarse-to-fine strategy is employed for all viewing modes. MPR views are generated at the rate of approximately 10 frames per second with 3D displays taking approximately 10 seconds per view. Clinically useful images, indicating the variation of radiation dose levels combined with 3D anatomy, can be generated interactively, allowing for the rapid evaluation of complex treatment plans.

Electrophoresis gel analysis is a viable technique for determining the purity of hybrid corn seeds. Visually analyzing the electrophoretic gel images is a very tedious and time-consuming task. In this paper, a computer vision system integrating imageprocessing and pattern recognition techniques with domain-specific structural information to automate the electrophoresis gel scoring procedure is presented. A set of imageprocessing algorithms are developed to perform extraction of the region of interest, segmentation of samples, identification of bands within samples, and final classification of different types of seeds. The imageprocessing algorithms utilize the structural information and operator expertise to achieve high classification rate with fuzzy and incomplete information contained on the electrophoresis gels. The developed technique clearly demonstrates the potential of using computer vision in automating the gel scoring procedure. The developed technology may also be extended to other areas such as general one-dimensional electrophoresis and high performance thin layer chromatography.

An important research topic in AI is the discovery of constraints. As constraints. In this paper, we present a model-directed image understanding prototype to support computer vision, which can recover constraints of an image by means of the spatial relation and spatial reasoning, according to a model. In the prototype, an object is viewed as an arrangement of two types components, viz., crucial component and ordinary component. Under the direction of models, these components are looked for in a top-down manner so that the image can be recognized. For this purpose, knowledge representation and organization of knowledge base are also presented. Some problems on this research are discussed and some reasons of this research as conclusions are also given to serve the future research.

A novel scheme is proposed to integrate multiple stereo algorithms in a cooperative framework. Each algorithm is implemented in a separate module and executed in parallel. The stereo correspondence obtained in each algorithm is stored in the module. Confidence of each stereo correspondence is evaluated based on the ambiguity in the search process and it is attached to the correspondence result. During the execution, each module communicates with other modules and offer subsets of its results to another by its request. The cooperation among the modules makes it possible not only to improve the performance of each algorithm but also to make the integrated system highly adaptive to various scenes. A system integrating three stereo matching algorithms which use different kinds of image features has been developed on a parallel computer to demonstrate the feasibility of the scheme.
