The multicast mechanism is one method of data communication in data networks which aims to transfer data to a group of receivers on a network in an efficient manner. In this work the performance of four well known and widely used multicast protocols are investigated using OMNeT++ open software, which was chosen for this purpose. Individual performance metrics are determined by executing simulation experiments and in addition a unique overall performance indicator is defined to solve the multi-criteria decision problem that is revealed as the network configuration and the service conditions vary. This performance evaluation approach can be used by network protocol designers for building and exploiting optimal protocols when setting up networks so as to achieve the best performance under the multicast traffic load and quality specifications.

Documentation of the current state of an object is often the first crucial step in cultural heritage preservation. Especially for large scale objects as buildings this task becomes complex and time consuming. Hence, there is a growing interest in new, more efficient techniques, which ease the process and reduce the financial impact of surveying actions. In case of façade restoration, experts need to map damages and plan the corresponding measures, before the actual restoration can take place. Here, two-dimensional CAD drawings, depicting each single stone, serve as a basis. Traditionally these plans are derived from classical surveying. Often a photogrammetric approach is chosen to reduce the efforts on site. But still image processing, including image registration and point measurements, is carried out punctually and manually. Since about three years, our institute supports the introduction of modern image processing tool chains to the application field of heritage preservation. Recently we participated in the restoration of the tower facades of the St. Martin dome in Rottenburg/Neckar, Germany. We combined laser scans, terrestrial imagery and images captured from a UAV platform, incorporating structure-from-motion, dense image matching, point cloud registration and production of orthographic projections, from which the CAD drawings could be derived.

Active magnetic bearings (AMBs) support a rotating shaft, inside a stator, contactless. Their major benefit in respect to hydrodynamic journal bearings is the possibility of operating in much higher rotational speeds (above 20.000 RPM). This is due to the fact that, their angular velocity is only limited by the strength of the shaft material and always they have stabilized operation without any mechanic contact. Also, AMBs are resulting in long life time, without the use of any lubrication system, eliminating thus the complexity of the lubricant network and promoting green operation of the rotating machines. Furthermore, the electromagnetic bearings are active elements that allow the measurement and the control of the position of the shaft, targeting in most accurate equilibrium positions, in terms of the shaft operation. Therefore, a suitable control system is required for a magnetic bearing, to exploit the above advantageous operational characteristics. In this study, the model of the control system of a Magnetic Bearing in terms of sensors and power amplifiers is presented and its design guidelines are explicitly described. As a first step, the non linear equation of the movement of the shaft inside the magnetic bearing, in one direction (y-axis), is introduced. Then, the linearization of this particular equation in a specific equilibrium point is performed and presented. Consequentially, the linear equation is transformed via Laplace method and the model of the Active Magnetic Bearing is finally developed. In addition to these, the sensor and the power amplifiers are modeled, to simulate the AMB system as a whole. The Matlab software is used to simulate the components that the AMB is consisted of. The P, I and D gains are the result of this simulations, which are produced via robust control method, in Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) tool module of Matlab. TMS320DM6446 was used as a platform to build a video monitoring and controlling system for plant diseases. TMS320DM6446 can capture and encode the plant video. It delivered the video stream to the PC monitoring center by using streaming technology. Monitoring center displayed the received video, monitored the plant condition of growth and disease, and then obtained the image and relevant characteristics of disease. It used a combination of neural networks and expert systems to diagnose the plant diseases, and gave the control methods. The experimental results show that the proposed system can timely collect information about plant growth status and disease, diagnose the type of disease correctly and then reach the purpose of effective prevention and control for plant diseases.

Based on their beneficial features, there is a growing importance of 3D molded interconnect devices. An important process in course of their manufacturing is the conducting pattern generation. Therefore industrial robots can be used, moving the substrate with a high accuracy relative to a process nozzle. Due to complex conducting patterns an offline programming of the robots trajectory is needed. Given to the robot, this leads to a precision of the movement not meeting the product demands. To overcome this problem, the usage of modern sensor systems for process monitoring and real-time robot control is investigated. By supervising the conducting pattern generation the actual robots position is derived. Subsequently correction values are determined and given to the robot control position deviations are compensated. For this way of proceeding an efficient methodology for data processing and correction value determination is developed. First experiments already show good results with high geometric accuracies.

Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) is a soft computing technique that has successfully been used to model complex systems and to develop Medical Decision Support Systems for many medical discipline applications. FCMs have a great ability to handle complexity, uncertainty and abstract inference as is the case in the health care sector. In this work a Hierarchical structure is introduced within an integrated health system where the Supervisor is modelled as an abstract FCM to support the triaging procedure. At the lower level, the FCM-ESI DSS is used to estimate the Triage ESI level of every patient. This FCM-ESI DSS is developed based on a novel approach, which ensures a high degree of inferring from human experts.
