Water is a vital resource for mankind used in activities such as agriculture, industry and domestic activity. Irrigation is one of the most consuming water resources in human activity. Irrigation canals are characterized for being spatially distributed crossing different administrative regions. As water is becoming a scarce and valuable resource, efficient engineering water conveyance networks are required. In this paper a discrete state space for modeling open-channels is presented. The well known Saint-Venant equations are first linearized for a steady state and then discretized using the Preissmann scheme. The resulting model is shown to be computational simple and flexible to accommodate different type of boundary conditions, in flow, water depth or hydraulic structures dynamics, which are important features for modeling complex water conveyance systems. The hydraulic model also offers monitoring ability along the canal axis and can therefore be integrated in fault diagnosis and tolerant control strategies. The model is validated with experimental data from a real canal property of the Évora University. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

For non-removable components of the future ASTRID prototype, repair operations will be performed in a gas environment. If the faulty area is located under the sodium free level, the gas-tight system will have to contain the inspection and repair tools and to protect them from the surrounding liquid sodium. Concerning repair tools, the unique laser tool has been selected for future SFRs: the repair scenario for in-sodium structures will first involve removing the sodium (after bulk draining), then machining and finally welding. Concerning conventional tools (brush or gas blower for sodium removal, milling machine for machining and TIG for welding for which its feasibility was demonstrated in the 1990s) are still considered as a back-up solution. In-pile examination or repair requires robotic carriers. These carriers have to be compatible with the sodium environment: either in the cover-gas plenum or in gas after sodium draining, or even under liquid sodium. This R&D programme has been divided into nine parts in order to provide an overall design of the required robotic carriers and to develop technological solutions for their components: detailed definition for SFR carrier needs (access to internal structures, possible defects to be detected/repaired), definition and specifications of carrier architecture (depending on inspection and repair scenarios), in-sodium leaktightness of carrier components, carrier material compatibility with sodium, temperature resistance (200 degrees C), irradiation resistance (depending on the location of the main vessel), gas-tight bell for operations under liquid sodium, carrier positioning control in liquid sodium, development, validation and qualification of technological solutions, for future SFRs, and worldwide benchmark regarding the previous areas of investigation.

One of the main visions of Semantic Web has been the ability of software agents to compose atomic web services in order to facilitate the automation of complex tasks. One of the approaches used in the past in order to automatically construct composite web services has been AI planning. The most important advantage of this approach is its dynamic character that reduces the interference of the user. Although there have been various attempts to utilize planning algorithms and systems in the composition process, there has been little work in the field of converting web service composition plans in OWL-S. This paper studies the use of two well established standards in expressing plans and composite web services, namely the Planning Domain Definition Language (PDDL) and the Ontology Web Language for Services (OWL-S) and suggests a method for translating the produced PDDL plans of any planning system to OWL-S descriptions of the final composite web services. The result is a totally new web service that can later be discovered and invoked or even take part in a new composition. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Thermal properties of building insulation are changed by the action of various external and internal influences. This causes the need for insulation material testing after a period of ten or fifteen years without its disturbing. The new measurement technology can monitor the temperature and humidity in the cavity between the building wall and insulation material. This procedure allows also detecting condensation process and this way to prevent subsequent destructive problems as well as creating an enabling environment for the spread of microorganisms, which are counted as serious risk processes in building insulation. The problem is the main topic of the research project carried out at the University of Prešov in Prešov and Vienna University of Technology entitled “Detection and Management of Risk Processes in Building Insulation” and numbered SrdA SK-AT-0008-10. It was uncovered during the project work that one or two measurements cannot describe the real situation in its entirety. The set of measurement series are required. Those can lead to description reliability of building insulation using the statistical methods to model its properties.

Thermal load oozing out through the door is the main aspect of the temperature zone heat loss of continuous diffusion furnace. In this paper, multi-layer gas curtain is designed to seal the furnace door in order to reduce heat loss and ensure furnace temperature to meet requirements in regulation. The unsteady flow is presented to better reflect complex time-varying velocity and temperature of curtain gas. Flow and temperature field of continuous diffusion door with multi-layer air curtain are numerically analyzed by Renault model and experimentally tested. And the influence parameters are tuned and optimized based on the theoretic numerical analysis and experiment results. © (2013) Trans tech publications, Switzerland.

In this paper, we propose a framework based on Internet of Things (IoT) and P2P technology for supporting learning and improving the quality of life for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Many children with autism are highly interested and motivated by smart devices such as computers and touch screen tablets. These types of assistive technology devices get children with autism to interact, make choices, respond, and tell parents what they want, need, think, and maybe even feel. Out framework uses JXTA-Overlay platform and smartbox device to monitor the children and create P2P communication between children, parents and therapists. Various visual systems, such as objects, photographs, realistic drawings, line drawings, and written words, can be used with assorted modes of technology, as long as the child can readily comprehend the visual representation. Vocabulary skills such as names of common everyday objects, fruits, animals, toys, names of familiar people can be taught through our proposed framework. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Cloud computing has become one of the most important information technologies due to the development of Internet technologies. Accordingly, cloud computing has been applied to various fields, in which many researchers have also tried to apply cloud computing to education field. Despite much research on cloud to education, little effort has been devoted to applying them to a course in programming. Programming is a subtle and serious work, which requires a lot time to think, design, implement, testing and debugging. Hence, teachers often teach students to collaboratively engage in programming. Among the applications of cloud computing, collaborative service is the most potential applications for achieving collaborative learning, in which they can be used to assist students in collaboratively accomplishing a learning task. Accordingly, we explore how to use such services to assist students in learning programming. Providing assistance systems for simulation studies can support the user by performing monotonous tasks and keeping track of relevant results. In this paper we present approaches to estimate, if - and when - statistically significant results are expected for certain investigations. This information can be used to control simulation runs or to provide information to the user for interaction. The first approach is used to classify if significance is expected to occur for given samples and the second approach estimates the needed replications until significance is expected be reached. For an initial evaluation of the approaches, experiments are performed on samples drawn from normal distributions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

In this article we will study the end effector motion control for a series robot with 6 rotational joints to move on a predetermined 3-dimensional trajectory. Since for any end effector there are more than a single set of answers regarding to robot parts orientation, finding a method which gives designer all existing states will lead to more freedom of action. Two different methods were used to solve robot inverse kinematic. In the first method ADAMS software was considered, which one of the common software is in order to solve inverse kinematic problems. Then bee algorithm (BA) is used which is an intelligent method. This method is the one of the fastest and most efficient method among existing method for solving non-linear problems. Hence problem of inverse kinematic solution is transformed into an affair of optimization. Comparison of results from both models shows the reasonable performance of BA method in solution of robot inverse kinematic because of its capability in providing the answer from all existing states along with the privilege of no need to 3D modeling. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Deformation modeling of an infinite plate of functionally graded materials (FGMs) loaded by normal force to the plate surface is studied. The material properties of FGM plate are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The governing equations are based on stress-strain relation and the equilibrium force equation. Keeping generality, FGM plate has been assumed as a multilayer with linear material property in each layer while arbitrary exponential material property through the thickness. A plate made of Aluminum and Alumina is considered as an example to illustrate the effects of the volume fraction exponent and number of layers on the plate deformation response. Effects of number of layers on the accuracy of the plate behavior under external load are examined. Results indicate that at every certain power-law (M), there exist a number of layers beyond which no variation can be detected on the plate deformation response. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
