NS-2 (Network Simulator) is one of the most popular discrete event simulators used for network simulation. Trace files produced by NS-2 provide very useful information for post simulation analysis. This paper presents the architecture and development considerations for a TRAce FILe analysis tool, which intends to simplify the management of trace files generated during network simulations. The tool is focused on NS-2 trace files, but can be extended to handle a variety of simulation trace files formats. Its purpose is to make the execution of a large number of network simulations faster, and the extraction of results from a large amount of data more flexible and productive. TRAFIL introduces a novel way of interpreting, parsing, reading and eventually utilizing NS-2 trace files by using "metafiles" and "sub-metafiles" during the trace file recognition and process procedures, making the overall operations more abstract, substantially efficient and faster than alternative approaches. Furthermore, TRAFIL facilitates the whole trace file analysis task, offering the opportunity to store each trace file as well as every measurement produced for each trace file. The tool aims to aid the analysis of simulation results offering features that other tools in this area have been missing.

Civil Infrastructure assets require continuous renewal actions to sustain their operability and safety. Allocating limited renewal funds amongst numerous building components, however, represents a large-scale optimization problem and earlier efforts utilized genetic algorithms (GAs) to optimize medium size problems yet exhibit steep performance degradation as problem size increases. In this research, after experimenting with various approaches of segmenting a large problem into multiple smaller sub-problems, clustered segmentation proved to be the most promising. The paper discusses the underlying life cycle analysis model, the various segmentation methods, and the optimization results using the improved GAs + clustered segmentation, which proved to be able to optimize asset renewals for 20,000 components with no noticeable performance degradation. The proposed method is simple and logical, and can be used on variety of asset types to improve infrastructure fund allocation. Future extension of this research is then highlighted.

Walking is an effective way of locomotion for the robot system, especially for the Hexapod robots. Walking offers a better robustness for robot redundancy of limbs. In order to enhance the adaptability of walking on unstructured terrain, a hexapod robot leg structure with the sensing ability has been developed. This structure is equipped with the 3-D force sensor at the tibia and the torque sensors at the first and second joint. The compliance control has been adopted to control the force of the foot end, combining with the real-time parameter estimation algorithm. The shape and stiffness can be updated to make the robot adapt to the mutative terrain better. Thus, the self-adaptively active compliance control for the hexapod robot leg has been realized. The effectiveness of the controller has been verified through virtual simulation.

The paper offers evolving Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models for a nonlinear benchmark represented by the pendulum-crane system and focused on the dynamics of pendulum angular position behavior. The rule bases and parameters of T-S fuzzy models are continuously evolved by an online identification algorithm in terms of computing the potentials of new data points. Accepting the pendulum angle as model output, two T-S fuzzy models are derived, viz. with a single input and with three inputs. The experimental results are obtained for a pendulum-crane laboratory equipment system and they show the performance of the proposed evolving T-S fuzzy models.

In this paper, we make an initial effort to define the scope and goals of “Cognitive control (CoCo)”, which intends to be a research initiative for bringing about a novel generation of control systems which - in a certain sense - reflect the behavior of humans while solving everyday tasks. Very briefly stated, through the use of a rich inventory of available modeling techniques, control theory has achieved profound results in model-based control approaches. However, these solutions do not seem to begin to approach the true level of human intelligence. We are convinced that by the synthesis of these “tools” from a particular point of view the great efficiency of human intelligence can be integrated/fused with the complementary virtues of our machines (e.g. high computing power, fast operation, etc.), and our CoCo initiative can be realized and applied in practice.
