Every day, thousands of first responders work to save the lives of others, sometimes without the adequate surveillance of health conditions. The VitalResponder is a project that aims at monitoring and control teams of first responders in emergency scenarios, using mobile technologies to capture and use real-time data to support real-time coordination. In this paper we present a system to capture, process, and display the vital signs of team members, which are made available to a first responders' team leader, for coordination and monitoring. The system addresses specific requirements of the field action, such as the mobility of actors, combining two of the most recent mobile technologies: the iPad (for the coordination view) and Android OS-based smartphones (for real-time sensor data acquisition). © 2012 ICST Institute for Computer Science, Social informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Rome is visited by 7 to 10 million tourists per year, many of them interested in historical sites. Most sites that are described in tourist guides (printed or online) are archaeological sites;we can call them visible archaeological sites. Unfortunately, even visible archaeological sites in Rome are barely marked - and invisible sites are completely ignored. In this paper, we present the ArchaeoApp Rome Edition (AARE). The novelty is not just to mark the important, visible, barely known sites, but to mark the invisible sites, consequently introducing a completely novel type of site to the tourist guidance: historical invisible sites. One challenge is to get to reliable, historic information on demand. A possible approach is to retrieve the information from Wikipedia directly. The second challenge is that most of the end users have no Web-access due to the high roaming costs. The third challenge is to address a balance between the best platform available and the most used platform. For e-Business purposes, it is of course necessary to support the highest possible amount of various mobile platforms (Android, iOS and Windows Phone). The advantages of AARE include: no roaming costs, data update on demand (when connected to Wi-Fi, e.g. at a hotel, at a public hotspot, etc.. for free), automatic nearby notification of invisible sites (markers) with a Visual- Auditory-Tactile technique to make invisible sites visible.

With the aim of realizing quasi-traveling wave drive in ultrasonic linear micro motors, a novel quasi-traveling wave ultrasonic linear motor using a ring type rectangular vibrator with the sizes of 39mm×6mm×12.7mm is proposed. The quasi-traveling wave is excited and propagates along the ring type rectangular vibrator depending on the superposition of two orthogonal flexural-vibration modes with a spatial phase shift of 90 degrees. 7 piezoelectric ceramic elements are used to excite two working modes of the vibrator. The vibrator structure was designed and eigenfrequency degeneration was realized by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method. The modal test shows that the design scheme was tenable. The excitation and propagation of quasi-traveling wave were proved by laser vibration test. The trial motor gave a maximum driving velocity of 162.5mm/s and a maximum load of 8.5N, while the excitation frequency was 66 KHz and voltage was 160Vpp. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In this study we propose a novel method for semi-automated 3D quantification of subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue from CTA data. The method differentiates between subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue by using gradient based deformable models using simplex meshes. The performance of the method is evaluated against a reference standard containing 27 manually annotated CTA scans made by expert observers. The quality of the reference standard is assessed by intra- and interobserver variability. The performance of the semi-automated method is evaluated against the reference standard by Pearson linear correlation and Bland and Altman analysis. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

There are many complex processes waiting for artificial cognitive solutions able to deal with new, complex, unknown, or arbitrary tasks efficiently. In this work, the modified shared circuits model (MSCM) for artificial cognitive control is presented. The main goal is to surpass the limitations of the shared circuits models and to formalize an integrated computational solution on the basis of a neuroscientific and psychological approach. Two novelties of the proposed systems are a commutation or switching mechanism between modules in order to reproduce efficiently the imitation, deliberation and mindreading characteristics of human sociocognitive skills. Another contribution is the introduction of a self-optimization strategy based on cross entropy in order to fulfil the control goals. The closed-loop behaviour of the drilling force demonstrates that the MSCM approach is an alternative and feasible option in the field of artificial cognitive control to deal with processes complexity and uncertainty. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Currently, most clinical knowledge is in free text and is not easily accessible to clinicians and medical researchers. A major grand challenge for medical informatics is the creation of a distributed, universal, formal, sharable, reusable, and computationally accessible medical knowledge base. The required knowledge consists of both procedural knowledge, such as clinical guidelines, and declarative knowledge, such as context-sensitive interpretations of longitudinal patterns of raw clinical data accumulating from several sources. In this position paper, I first demonstrate the feasibility of such an enterprise, and explain in detail the overall lifecycle of a clinical guideline, by reviewing the main current components and their respective evaluations of one such comprehensive architecture for management of clinical guidelines: The Digital Electronic Guideline Library (DeGeL), a Web-based, modular, distributed architecture that facilitates gradual conversion of clinical guidelines from text to a formal representation in chosen target guideline ontology. The architecture supports guideline classification, semantic markup, context-sensitive search, browsing, run-time application to a specific patient at the point of care, and retrospective quality assessment. The DeGeL architecture operates closely with a declarative-knowledge temporal-abstraction architecture, IDAN. Thus, there is significant evidence that building a distributed, multiple-ontology architecture that caters for the full life cycle of a significant portion of current clinical procedural and declarative knowledge, which I refer to as "the Human Clin-knowme Project," has become a feasible task for a joint, coordinated, international effort involving clinicians and medical informaticians. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The Bionic Handling Assistant is a new continuum robot which is manufactured in a rapid-prototyping procedure out of elastic polyamide. Its mechanical flexibility and low weight provide an enormous potential for physical human robot interaction. Yet, the elasticity and parallel continuum actuation design challenge standard approaches to deal with a robot from a control, simulation, and software modeling perspective. We investigate how the software abstractions of the existing Robot control Interface (RCI) and the Compliant control Architecture (CCA) can deal with this platform from a software modeling and software architectural perspective. We focus on three different challenges: the first challenge is to enable reasonable and hierarchical semantic abstractions of the robot. The second challenge is to develop hardware I/O abstractions for the prototypical and heterogeneous technical setup. The third challenge is to realize this in a flexible and reusable manner. We evaluate our approaches to the above challenges in a practical scenario in which the robot is controlled either in simulation or on the real robot. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
