Information systems are ever more connected to the Internet, which gives wide opportunities for interacting with other actors, systems and resources and for exploiting the open and vast marked. This pushes the limits for security mechanisms which in general are too rigorous to fully adapt to such a dynamic and heterogeneous environment. Trust mechanisms can supplement the security mechanisms in this situation to reduce the risk by means of trusted evidences. We propose DeSPoT, a method for the development and specification of policies for trust negotiation. DeSPoT is created to be easy to use for business level experts, yet demonstrated in an industrial study to be useful for those who develop and maintain the system conducting trust negotiation within acceptable risk. Adherence to a DeSPoT policy should ensure that the target fulfills the organizational level requirements to the trust behavior, and that the target is not exposed to unacceptable risk. The paper gives an example-driven presentation of the method. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Research on CogInfoCom channels has thus far focused on channels in which syntactics and semantics have a static relationship, and in which information is communicated through the transmission of discrete CogInfoCom messages between two communicational endpoints. In this paper, we make a first attempt to extend the concept of CogInfoCom channels to incorporate dynamicons, which are forms of communication in which two or more communicational endpoints are bound to the same dynamic processes. Information, then, is the transmitted dynamics itself, instead of being represented by a set of messages which are external to the process of communication. After a short introduction to what we mean by the concept of dynamicons, we present a reference model to this problem which is suitable for Internet-based communication characterized by unpredictable time delays. We discuss how the generalization of the reference model can lead to interesting and novel applications in CogInfoCom.

Cognitive info-communications is a rapidly developing scientific paradigm. It integrates the representations of different research fields within a common model, that promotes the fast transfer and synthesis of scientific results. In this paper, an ambient assisted living framework is considered and it is explained, what kind of advantages can be taken from the integration of the framework with the paradigm of cognitive info-communications. The ambient assisted living framework is based on the intelligent space concept, which is realized in the VirCA platform, and it is extended with the use of semantic information. In the other direction, it is explained, what kind of advantages can be taken from the use of semantic information in the case of a coginfocom system. It is presented as well, how the use of semantic information and the paradigm of cognitive info-communications can enhance the efficiency and the performance of an assisted living application.

The Internet has proved the enormous benefits that can be accrued to all players involved in online services. However, it has also clearly demonstrated the risks involved in exposing personal data to the outside world and constitutes at the same time a teeming breeding ground of innovation for highly flexible security solutions that can minimize these risks. It is now widely believed that the benefits of online services to healthcare in general supplant the risks involved, provided adequate security measures are taken and the role played by all the parties involved, be they physicians, nurses or patients are clearly outlined. Due to the highly sensitive nature of the data held on the Electronic Health Record (EHR), it is commonly agreed that providing online access to patients EHR to the outside world carries an unacceptable level of risk not only to the patients but also to the healthcare institution that plays a custodian to that sensitive data. However, by sharing these risks with the patients, healthcare institutions can start to equate the possibility of providing controlled exterior online access to patients EHR. The mobile phone is nowadays the preferred mean by which people can interact with each other at a distance. Not only that, the smartphone constitutes the full embodiment of the truly personal device users carry constantly with them, everywhere. They are therefore the ideal means by which the user can casually and conveniently interact with information systems. In this paper we propose a discretionary online access rights management mechanism based on the Role Based Access control (RBAC) model that takes advantage on the personal/technical characteristics and data communications capabilities of the smartphone in order to provide patients with the means by which they can conveniently exercise safe discretionary online access permissions to their own EHR. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Permission systems control access of mobile applications to other applications, data, and resources on a smartphone. Both from a technical and a social point of view, they are based on the assumption that users actually understand these permissions and hence they can make an informed decision about which permission to grant to which piece of software. Results of a survey conducted for this article seriously challenges this assumption. For instance, over a third of participating Android users were not able to correctly identify the meaning of the permission Full Internet Access. We developed PermissionWatcher, an Android application which provides users with awareness information about other applications and allows to check on the permission set granted to individual applications. In a field study with 1000+ Android users, we collected data that provides evidence that users are willing to follow security principles if security awareness is created and information is presented in a clear and comprehensive way. Therefore, we argue that it is essential for security policies to take the abilities of the target audience into account. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

Over the past decades, reinforcement learning has been applied in several fields of computer science (especially in machine learning) as a learning algorithm. The same model can be used in cognitive neuroscience. In this case, neurotransmitters are providing the rewarding signal, and therefore in the background a similar learning process occurs as in reinforcement learning. According to previous studies, the same chemicals are produced through playing video games. In this paper, we aim to show a few methods and promising approaches to advance a biofeedback-controlled self-rewarding learning framework, which can be established in numerous applications. In recent times, mobile devices (phones and tablets as well) acquire more and more popularity among teenagers. Our objective is to develop a framework on these devices to measure and interpret neural activity and learning progress in general, so a related system can be developed to sustain attention and as a result, adaptive computer games may be developed in the near future.

Radical prostatectomy (RP) is viewed by many as the gold standard treatment for clinically localized prostate cancer. State of the art radical prostatectomy involves the da Vinci surgical system, a laparoscopic robot which provides the surgeon with excellent 3D visualization of the surgical site and improved dexterity over standard laparoscopic instruments. Given the limited field of view of the surgical site in Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (RALRP), several groups have proposed the integration of Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) imaging in the surgical work flow to assist with the resection of prostate and sparing the Neuro-Vascular Bundle (NVB). Rapid and automatic registration of TRUS imaging coordinates to the da Vinci tools or camera is a critical component of this integration. We propose a fully automatic registration technique based on accurate and automatic localization of robot tool tips pressed against the air-tissue boundary of the prostate, in 3D TRUS. The detection approach uses a multi-scale filtering technique to uniquely identify and localize the tool tip in the ultrasound volume and could also be used to detect other surface fiducials in 3D ultrasound. Feasibility experiments using a phantom and two ex vivo tissue samples yield promising results with target registration error (defined as the root mean square distance of corresponding points after registration) of (1.80 mm) that proves the system's accuracy for registering 3D TRUS to the da Vinci surgical system. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Due to the increase in world-wide containerized cargo transport port authorities are facing considerable pressure to increase efficiency of existing facilities. Container vessels with 18,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) are expected soon to create high flow peaks at container terminals. In this paper we propose a new framework for managing intermodal container terminals, based on the model predictive control methodology. A model based on queues and container categorization is used by a model predictive controller to solve the handling resource allocation problem in a container terminal in an optimal way, while respecting constraints on resource availability. The optimization of the operations is performed in an integrated way for the whole terminal rather than only for an individual subprocess. Containers are categorized into empty and full containers, and divided in classes according to their final destination. With more detailed information available, like container final destination, it is possible to establish priorities for the container flows inside the terminal. The order in which the container classes should be loaded into a carrier can now be addressed taking into account the carrier future route. The model ability to track the number of containers per class makes this framework suitable for describing terminals integrated in an intermodal transport network and a valuable tool for coordinating the transport modal shift towards a more sustainable and reliable transport. The potential of the proposed framework is illustrated with simulation studies based on a high-peak flow scenario and for a long-term scheduled scenario. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper represents the first steps in investigating issues emerging from a scenario where a robot is used as an avatar interacting around a tabletop surface with the robot being used to represent a remote member of a group. In particular, the effectiveness of the users, present in the immediate vicinity of the tabletop, at identifying which object on the tabletop is being indicated by a full size humanoid robot using our control scheme is investigated. The work is carried out in two phases; the first one focused on the accuracy in identification the object while the second phase focused on the response time of the identification process. The latter experiments are carried out with the introduction of a tabletop visual identification light while using the same robot. Two variants of the experiment were conducted for control and comparison. In variant 1, a human is used instead of the robot and in variant 2, no embodiment is used, that is, only the cursor is used to indicate the artifact. The results obtained indicate that the use of an embodiment, even with restricted degrees of freedom, when using our control scheme for designation has a significant positive effect on the artifact detection time.
