This paper deals with resource allocation in multi-project manufacturing system design, where more than one shared renewable resource type may be required by the manufacturing operation and the availability of each type is time limited. The aim of the paper is to present a knowledge-based and constraint programming-driven approach to resource allocation where that data can be imprecise. The presented design scheme is used as a framework for developing a task oriented decision support tool for project portfolio prototyping (DST4P 3 ). The tool provides a prompt and interactive service to a set of routine queries defined in terms of both direct and inverse resource allocation tasks.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a remote experiment for controlling the level of a two-tank system. It describes also the management of the team work: it was performed in a remote collaborative methodology by two students of the fourth year of the Industrial Electronics Master Course at University of Minho (UM) and one student from the third year of the Industrial informatics course of the Polytechnic Institute of Cavado and Ave (IPCA), both high education institutions in Minho region. It is a project work, implemented by undergraduate students and for future students use. The experiment is controlled using an on-off controller and a PID algorithm. The kit is monitored by a custom developed LabVIEW environment. The remote user can test the digital algorithms and parameters, change level reference values and register the output data.

One of the ways to enlighten the students understanding on control theory is through practical laboratory experiments. Numerous diverse practical demonstrations and laboratory sessions exist for supplementing control theory. However, to fully understand these control theories through laboratory experiments would be impossible as the time needed would be too long and would not fit in the course curriculum. Using the technology of virtual instrumentation, we have developed a laboratory package to be used in the teaching of control engineering subject. The package covers topics for undergraduate students as well as post graduate students. The laboratory package features both simulated experiments and real time experiments. Results on the study of the effectiveness of the laboratory package has shown that students using this package are able to complete their laboratory experiments faster than those who do not use the package. In addition to that the students using the package obtained higher grades, demonstrating their deep understanding of the subject.

The Virtual Museum of the Pacific is a digital ecosystem implemented as Web 2.0 application that experiments with information and knowledge acquisition for a digital collection of museum artifacts from the Australian Museum. The Virtual Museum of the Pacific allows several search methods: attribute search based on a control vocabulary, query refinement and query-by-example but importantly it facilitates a number of social media interfaces that enable content to be added and tagged, the control vocabulary to be extended, user perspectives to be defined and narratives added via wiki. We characterize the design of the Virtual Museum of the Pacific as: a semantic Web application with a Web services back-end, and as a digital ecosystem by identifying its purpose, function and stakeholders. In doing so, the paper illustrates the issues encountered in its design and deployment, the technical platform, the historical context of the growth of the collection and the challenges to the organization and management of a digital ecosystem metadata model.

In this paper a new approach is proposed to increase the performance of the operation of error control on data transmission. Specifically, a hardware structure for parallel cyclic redundancy check (CRC) calculation is developed to speed up the error control operation of data transmission. Based on a study of the properties of both CRC and check sum (CS) a new error detecting scheme is developed which combines CRC and CS. Also it is shown that the proposed error detecting scheme ensures high reliability and performance of the error control operation on data transmission in comparison to CRC alone.

Conventional colonoscopy frequently causes pains to patients and sometimes even leads to enterobrosis and other medical accidents. This occurs mainly because the operation technique of colonoscopy is so complicated that there are only a small amount of professional doctors can complete the insertion procedure in a short time. Therefore, a new type of rotated insertion Colonovideoscope robot is developed. The robot with an adopting self-propelled motivating device and direction control system can creep into large intestine just like a snake. Having designed the insertion tube and spiral structure, we chose multiple sorts of materials to manufacture them. Moreover, insertion test using human large intestine model was finished and the questions in test were analyzed to improve the original structure. The test result shows that some certain propulsion in large intestine model can be realized. This study founds the basis to develop this new robot for colonoscopy in the future.

In the context of the animat approach, we investigate the effect of an emotion-like hormonal mechanism, as a modulator of perception - and second order controller to an underlying motivation-based action selection architecture - on brain-body-environment interactions within a prey-predator scenario. We are particularly interested in the effects that affective modulation of different perceptual capabilities has on the dynamics of interactions between predator and prey, as part of a broader study of the adaptive value of emotional states such as ¿fear¿ and ¿aggression¿ in the context of action selection. In this paper we present experiments where we modulated the architecture of a prey robot using two different types of sensory capabilities, proximal and distal, effectively creating combinations of different prey ¿brains¿ and ¿bodies¿.

This paper presents a trajectory planning methodology for a mobile manipulator whose end-effector has to follow a predefined operational trajectory while considering obstacles in its environment. The robot is controlled by a multi-agent architecture that consists of six agents: Four agents are installed on an off-board PC and two others installed on the onboard PC of the robot. The validity of the methodology is demonstrated using the RobuTER/ULM mobile manipulator. The end-effector of the robot is asked to follow a straight-line while the non-holonomic differentially driven mobile base has to avoid obstacles in the environment. The end-effector of the robot is positioned at the preferred configuration progressively as the mobile base moves due to messages (current position coordinates and orientation angle of the mobile base, etc.) exchanged between the various agents of the control architecture.

Supervised physical training has been shown to promote rehabilitation of patients affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Currently, due to limited resources, not all COPD patients can be trained by an expert supervisor. The objective of our research is to construct a clinical decision support system (DSS) which observes and controls physical ergometer training sessions of COPD patients. A systematic literature review and expert interviews were carried out to build up the knowledge base for the DSS. Nine production rules were established and standardized by Drools and Arden Syntax. The developed software autonomously controls training sessions on a bicycle ergometer. Thus it offers a new way for the rehabilitation of COPD patients. Tests in a laboratory environment have confirmed its correct function, but the effects of its use for COPD patients' rehabilitation and their quality of life have to be investigated in a further study.
