Different image-based applications may benefit from different imaging technologies. A popular example are omnidirectional cameras which, due to their large field of view, are extremely useful in robotics and videosurveillance. We will review these and other imaging technologies that go beyond usual cameras and explain motivations for using them. The core of the lecture will concern the geometric modelling of different imaging systems and its use for calibrating them and perform structure-from-motion computations such as motion estimation and 3D modelling.

A novel method is developed to effectively manipulating nano-entities to predefined positions and orientations autonomously. In this method, the nanomanipulation process is programmed by planning and executing the AFM tip's movement, and the amplitude of probe-tip's vibration is measured in real-time to detect the boundary of the nano-entities under manipulation - which will change as a function of the distance between the probe-tip and a nano-entity due to their inter-molecular force interactions. After the start-position and destination are defined by the user interface software, the nanomanipulation process is operated automatically. The result from each manipulation step is detected and used as the information for feedback control on the subsequent operating step. Using this method, CNTs can be manipulated to any position and orientation. Experimental results show that this manipulation method is effective and more efficient (reduce operation time by >50%) than nanomanipulation processes with a human operator in the feedback loop.

In this paper, we design planar nR serial chains that provide one degree-of-freedom movement for an end-effector through five arbitrarily specified task positions. These chains are useful for deployment linkages or the fingers of a mechanical hand. The trajectory of the end-effector pivot is controlled by n-1 sets of cables that are joined through a planetary gear system to two input variables. These two input variables are coupled by a four-bar linkage, and the movement of the end-effector around its end joint is driven by a second four-bar linkage. The result is one degree-of-freedom system. The design of the cabling system allows control of the shape of the chain as it moves through the task positions. This combines techniques of deployable linkage design with mechanism synthesis to obtain specialized movement with a minimum number of actuators. Two example designs for a 6R planar chain are presented, one with a square initial configuration and a second with a hexagonal initial configuration.

The creation of detailed virtual urban environments is an increasingly common task being faced by both the film and games industries. It is a time-consuming and expensive process that requires artists to model vast amounts of geometric detail, including terrain, roads, buildings and other associated features. We demonstrate a system that allows an artist to rapidly generate 3D cityscapes of arbitrary size, complexity and layout. This is achieved by means of an interactive interface that enables close control over key parameters while the system procedurally generates the required detail in real time. The sound can offer precision of spatial perception that cannot be achieved by the eye itself Thus the support of 3D surround sound of high fidelity is mandatory for a 3D Virtual platform. The evolution of Internet telephony led to the introduction of new session establishment and management protocols. The most important of them, the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), is a robust, lightweight reliable and fast application-layer control (signaling) protocol that is highly adopted for creating, modifying and terminating sessions. This protocol can be of extreme importance in establishing audio sessions for multi-user platforms. This paper presents the work done for developing a SIP 3D spatial audio server for a multi-user virtual environments platform, called EVE, in order to support 3D spatial audio.
