Nowadays, there is a plethora of robotic systems from different vendors and with different characteristics that work in specific tasks. Unfortunately, most of the robotic operating systems come in a closed control architecture. This fact represents a challenge to integrate these systems with other robotic components, such as vision systems or other types of robots. In this paper, we propose an integration methodology to create or to enhance robotic systems by combining tools from computer vision, planning systems and distributed computing areas. In particular we are proposing the use of CORBA specification to create Wrapper Components. They are object-oriented modules that create an abstract interface for a specific class of hardware or software components. Furthermore, they have several connectivity and communication properties that make easy to interconnect with each other.

This paper describes a study of the auditory environment in a chemical factory and how a group of process operators ascribe meaning to a selection of sound clips from their daily work environment. It is shown that the richness of the auditory environment is a crucial aspect of the distributed work environment. We argue that a phenomenological approach for soundscape studies in relation to HCI is needed to understand auditory interfaces for cooperative environments. One way of doing this is to search in existing work practices, explore how already present sounds are used and to let this knowledge inform the design of new useful auditory environments. Three aspects regarding the meaning of the factory sound events are put forward;how the operators use sound for identifying things and places, notification about status of surrounding artifacts and for maintaining social awareness. In this paper, 3D scanners are presented for industrial quality assurance and 3D inspection. The paper also shows a typical measuring procedure of a full-field measurement using a modern 3D scanner. For the inspection of large and complex components, a robot is used, together with a rotation table. The data of a digitized cylinder head cover compared to the respective CAD data set were also shown

This paper describes our efforts and plans to develop a Virtual Laboratory for the education in robotics and automation. These efforts are characterized by the need of blending R&A subjects into a traditional Computer Science curriculum, thus forcing a specific selection of development topics. In this context, the robotics Laboratory must provide basic as well as advanced experiments, to address the needs of students at different education levels. In this paper, we present the development of three main applications, to support control Systems and robotics classes, as well as thesis and dissertation research. Of particular interest is the effort in the area of teleoperation, preliminary to the opening, next year, of a new curriculum on Medical informatics, in which Computer Assisted Surgery will play an important role.
