We present an application of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to atmospheric tomography that is required for compensating optical aberrations introduced by the atmospheric turbulence using dedicated tomographic Adaptive Optics (AO) systems. We compare the state of the art Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) reconstructor with a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and a CNN architecture and show that the CNN performs up to 15%-20% better than the MMSE and is more robust to atmospheric profile variations up to 10% compared to the MLP. Such results pave the way to implement CNN architectures to revisit atmospheric tomography for astronomical telescopes equipped with AO.

Research into sentiment analysis and its capabilities at analysing product reviews has increased tremendously in recent years. In this paper, we propose an approach to classify product reviews and identify use cases. Several iterations showing the application of natural language processing techniques and machine learning classifications are depicted. A number of machine learning classifiers are trained/tested in various iterations, their performance and accuracy at predicting the existence of use cases in product reviews is evaluated.

This paper presents a multi-platform Web-based video annotator to support multimodal annotation that can be applied to several working areas, such as dance rehearsals, among others. The CultureMoves' "Motion-Notes" Annotator was designed to assist the creative and exploratory processes of both professional and amateur users, working with a digital device for personal annotations. This prototype is being developed for any device capable of running in a modern Web browser. It is a real-time multimodal video annotator based on keyboard, touch and voice inputs. Five different ways of adding annotations have been already implemented: voice, draw, text, web URL, and mark annotations. Pose estimation functionality uses machine learning techniques to identify a person skeleton in the video frames, which gives the user another resource to identify possible annotations.

The detection of buried minimum-metal anti-personnel landmines is a time-consuming problem, due to the high false alarm rate (FAR) arising from metallic clutter typically found in minefields. Magnetic induction spectroscopy (MIS) offers a potential way to reduce the FAR by classifying the metallic objects into threat and non-threat categories, based on their spectroscopic signatures. A new algorithm for threat identification for MIS sensors, based on a fully-connected artificial neural network (ANN), is proposed in this paper, and compared against a classifier based on Support Vector Machines (SVM). The results demonstrate that MIS is a potentially viable option for the reduction of false alarms in humanitarian demining. It is also shown that the ANN outperforms the SVM-based approach for threat objects containing minimal amounts of metal.

This case study benchmarks a range of statistical and machine learning methods relevant to computer-based decision support in clinical medicine, focusing on the diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis at first presentation. The methods, comprising logistic regression, Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID) and Classification and Regression Trees (CART), are applied to a public domain database, the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI), a 10 year longitudinal study starting in 2002 (n = 4,796). In this real-world application, it is shown that logistic regression is comparable with the neural networks and decision trees for discrimination of positive diagnosis on this data set. This is likely because of weak non-linearities among high levels of noise. After comparing the explanations provided by the different methods, it is concluded that the interpretability of the risk score index provided by logistic regression is expressed in a form that most naturally integrates with clinical reasoning. The reason for this is that it gives a statistical assessment of the weight of evidence for making the diagnosis, so providing a direction for future research to improve explanation of generic non-linear models.

Coffee is the natural gift of Ethiopia. Generally the export quality washed coffee beans of Ethiopia are classified into two grades and sundried coffee beans into five different grades based on their number of defects. The objective of the research is to extract the features of green coffee beans from the images which would be helpful on classifying the coffee beans to different grades by an automated system. Different image processing techniques are applied on the images to perform preprocessing, segmentation and feature extraction. The extracted features of the coffee beans from images are broadly classified as morphological, textural and color. The morphological feature includes area, perimeter, major axis length, minor axis length, Eccentricity. Energy, Entropy, contrast and homogeneity are the information relevant to texture. Individual color component values of the three primary colors, along with its hue, intensity and saturation values are extracted for color features of the coffee beans. automated classification and machine learning algorithms needs a data set for further processing. data mining applications for discovering different patterns for various grades and knowledge discovery need a highly accurate dataset. Hence, preparing such data set by applying image processing techniques is becoming the objective of this research study. Achieving an optimized mapping of Deep learning (DL) operators to new hardware architectures is the key to building a scalable DL system. However, handcrafted optimization involves huge engineering efforts, due to the variety of DL operator implementations and complex programming skills. Targeting the innovative many-core processor SW26010 adopted by the 3rd fastest super-computer Sunway TaihuLight, an end-to-end automated framework called swATOP is presented as a more practical solution for DL operator optimization. Arithmetic intensive DL operators are expressed into an auto-tuning-friendly form, which is based on tensorized primitives. By describing the algorithm of a DL operator using our domain specific language (DSL), swATOP is able to derive and produce an optimal implementation by separating hardware-dependent optimization and hardware-agnostic optimization. Hardware-dependent optimization is encapsulated in a set of tensorized primitives with sufficient utilization of the underlying hardware features. The hardware-agnostic optimization contains a scheduler, an intermediate representation (IR) optimizer, an auto-tuner, and a code generator. These modules cooperate to perform an automatic design space exploration, to apply a set of programming techniques, to discover a near-optimal solution, and to generate the executable code. Our experiments show that swATOP is able to bring significant performance improvement on DL operators in over 88% of cases, compared with the best-handcrafted optimization. Compared to a black-box autotuner, the tuning and code generation time can be reduced to minutes from days using swATOP.
